Article: Pressure is on for Twins starters
Seth Stohs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great article... I don't think that Pedro Hernandez's career is on the line though at all. Sure, his current starting rotation spot is, and should but, but he's left-handed and just recently turned 24. He'll be around for a long time. Deduno will have to walk less, so I don't think he'll be up any time soon. Walters has been very solid the last 3-4 times out. Gibson has been good in 3 of his last 4 starts. Andrew Albers has probably been the Red Wings best starter. De Vries struggled on Friday night... I think there were 3 unearned runs to go with those two earned runs. I can see him getting one more rehab appearance and then if it goes OK, move him up. If not, just option him. Alex Meyer has struggled his last couple of outings. Hendriks hasn't been terribly good with the Red Wings, but he should still be considered a future big leaguer as he too is just 24. -
If you adopted a prospect and have not yet posted an introductory thread or updated the thread in a week, be sure to write soon.

Adam Brett Walker, 3rd round 2012 draft
Seth Stohs replied to TRex's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
This is pretty ridiculous ovreall, but for some reason, I'm still going to respond. Prospects are the ones that HAVE TO be handled appropriately ,and that's all that matters. Walker was a third round pick LAST YEAR. Obviously they like him a lot. Murphy was in Ft. Myers. He'll be up with the Miracle for maybe a week. No reason to uproot Walker for that time span. Walker will move quickly. He's been good now for almost a month. A couple more weeks and he'll be up, I would think. At latest, it's after the All Star game in mid-June, which is just fine too. -
Twins Minor League Report (5/12): Soul Patrol Part Deux
Seth Stohs posted an article in Minor Leagues
Three minor league affiliates played on Sunday. The two upper-level minor league affiliates played very good, close ball games. Ft. Myers had a day off. The game in Beloit on Sunday was just crazy. You’ll note the final score looks much more like a football score than a baseball score. That is all good news for the Kernels hitters. It certainly doesn’t speak well for the Kernels starters on this day. Consider this early preview… Kernels outfielders (JD Williams, Byron Buxton and Adam Walker combined to go 9-15 with four doubles, a triple, two home runs, 11 runs scored and 13 runs batted in. Soul Patrol: The Next Generation? [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] Here's much more on the Twins minor league activity from Sunday: Rochester Red Wings 5, Columbus Clippers 4 Box Score The Red Wings offense didn’t really do a lot in this game, with the exception of one inning. They scored five runs in the fifth inning and were able to hang on for the win. The big hits came off the bats of Nate Hanson and Joe Benson. Hanson had a two-run single. Benson’s sixth double also resulted in two runs. Hanson was 2-4. Eric Farris was also 2-4. Chris Colabello went 2-3 with a walk and his 11th double. PJ Walters got the start. In six innings, he gave up one run on four hits, three walks, two HBP and he struck out three. Tyler Robertson pitched a scoreless seventh, though he did allow a triple and a walk. In the eight he allowed a single and a walk. He left the game with one out in the eighth without having allowed those runners to score. Dan Turpen came in and got the final two outs but not before allowing both inherited runners to score. Luis Perdomo came in for the ninth and got the save. However, he did give up one run on one hit and three walks. Virgil Vasquez will make a start for the Red Wings on Monday night. After Kyle Gibson’s, 114-pitch, complete game shutout last week, he will be pushed back one day and start on Tuesday. New Britain Rock Cats 2, Portland Sea Dogs 3 Box Score The Rock Cats had another close game against the Sea Dogs. Logan Darnell pitched eight innings. He gave up three runs on ten hits and a walk; he struck out five. Michael Tonkin came in and gave up a hit and struck one out in the ninth. The two New Britain runs came on Josmil Pinto’s eighth home run. Danny Santana went 3-4 with a walk and two stolen bases. New Britain will enjoy an off day on Monday. Ft. Myers Miracle No Game Scheduled on Sunday. Jason Wheeler will hope to improve to 4-0 against Dunedin. Cedar Rapids Kernels 23, Beloit Snappers 16 Box Score Maybe you thought this was an Arena League Football score, or something. No, 23-16 was the actual score of this minor league game at Pohlman Stadium. Let’s start with the good, before getting to the bad and ugly! All nine Kernels hitters had at least one hit and one RBI and scored at least one run. The team had 19 hits and nine walks. Byron Buxton went 4-7 with his ninth double, his fourth triple and four RBI. Adam Walker was 4-6 with his ninth and tenth doubles, his eighth and ninth home runs and seven RBI (40 on the season). Niko Goodrum went 3-4 with a walk, his seventh double and three RBI. Tyler Grimes went 2-4 with two walks, his first home run and two RBI. Dalton Hicks was 2-4 with two walks. JD Williams went 1-2 with three walks and his fifth double. Jorge Polanco hit his fourth triple and two sacrifice flies. Travis Harrison hit his 13th double. Now for the bad and the ugly. With all that run support, JO Berrios was able to finish only four innings; he gave up three runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out six and had one wild pitch. David Hurlbut came on and gave up six runs on six hits and two walks in 1.2 innings. Alex Muren then came in. He went 2.1 innings and gave up one run on two hits and a walk. When he came in to relieve Hurlbut there were two runners on base and neither scored. Josh Burris pitched the ninth. He gave up six runs on four hits and two walks. On Monday, the Kernels will play the final game of the series in Beloit. Matt Tomshaw, who pitched brilliantly for the Snappers in 2012, hopes to eat up some innings for the Kernels. Michael Quesada will be joining the Kernels, back home on Tuesday. Please feel free to comment or ask questions below.-

Twins Minor League Report (5/10): A-Mays-ing Start
Seth Stohs commented on Seth Stohs's blog entry in SethSpeaks.net
One of the Twins minor league games was postponed due to rain on Friday, but there were still five games to follow. The Kernels got two terrific starting performances, and Trevor May was terrific (or, a-mays-ing?) in his start for the Rock Cats. Kennys Vargas had a couple of big hits for the Miracle, and Adam Walker remains red hot for Cedar Rapids. Carlos Correa played in Game 1 in the matchup of last year’s #1 overall pick against last year’s #2 overall pick (Buxton). Were the two able to impress? Well, you’ll just have to keep reading to find out! Rochester Red Wings, Columbus Clippers Rains in upper New York caused this game to be postponed. The teams will play a double header on Saturday. Game 1 - New Britain Rock Cats 4, Portland Sea Dogs 6 Box Score Cole De Vries made his second rehab start, his first with the Rock Cats. He gave up five runs (2 earned) on four hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out five. Blake Martin gave up one run on two hits and a walk in the 6th inning. AJ Achter worked a perfect seventh inning. Danny Santana went 2-3 with his fourth triple. (He also committed his 12th error of the season!) Danny Ortiz went 1-3 with a walk and his 11th double. The Rock Cats had five hits and six walks in the game. Game 2 - New Britain Rock Cats 6, Portland Sea Dogs 0 Box Score The story of Game 2 was the work of Trevor May. The hard-throwing right-hander went all seven innings. He gave up two hits and a walk and no runs. He struck out ten, the most by a Rock Cats pitcher in almost two years, since Kyle Gibson struck out ten on May 15, 2010. Antoan Richardson went 3-4. Dan Rohlfing went 2-3 with his second and third doubles. Jhon Goncalves went 1-1 and walked twice. Ft. Myers Miracle 5, Jupiter Hammerheads 2 (11 innings) Box Score Kennys Vargas played the role of hero in this game. In the second inning, he hit a solo homer, his sixth of the year. Then with the bases-loaded in the 11th inning, he drilled a line drive single to drive in two runs to give the Miracle the lead. In all, he was 2-4 with a walk and three RBI. Eddie Rosario was back in the lineup on Friday. He was 2-5 with his third stolen base. Stephen Wickens and Angel Morales each went 2-5. Taylor Rogers went five innings in the start. He gave up two runs on six hits and a walk. Chad Rodgers came on and struck out two in two scoreless, one-hit innings. Zack Jones struck out five, and walked one, in two hitless innings. Adrian Salcedo struck out three in two scoreless innings to improve to 3-0. The Win puts the Miracle at 27-7. Game 1 - Cedar Rapids Kernels 2, Quad Cities Bandits 0 (11 innings) Box Score Game 1 was certainly a pitcher’s duel. Hudson Boyd was at his best. He threw six shutout innings. He gave up just two hits, walked one and struck out four. He didn’t allow a hit until there was one out in the fifth frame. Steven Gruver came on and threw 3.1 scoreless innings. He gave up four hits, walked one and struck out two. Tim Atherton got the final five outs, three of them came on strikeouts. In the 11th inning, Dalton Hicks drilled a double that scored Jorge Polanco with the game’s first run. Travis Harrison then drove in Hicks with an insurance run. Adam Walker went 3-5 with his eighth double. He also stole his third base. Hicks went 2-4 with his tenth double. Jorge Polanco went 2-4. It is also noteworthy that for the first time this season, Byron Buxton did not reach base in a game. Carlos Correa, the #1 overall pick in last year’s draft, returned from the DL to play in Game 1. He went 0-3 with a walk. Game 2 - Cedar Rapids Kernels 5, Quad Cities Bandits 1 Box Score The Twins got another very good start in Game 2. Lefty Mason Melotakis threw 5.1 scoreless innings. He gave up three hits, walked three and struck out nine. Josh Burris went the final 1.2 innings. He gave up one run on one hit and two walks. He struck out one. After not scoring for ten innings in the first game, the Kernels tallied four runs in the first inning ofg the second game. Adam Walker went 2-3 with his third and fourth triples. Travis Harrison went 2-3 with his tenth double. Niko Goodrum was 2-4 with his first triple. Dalton Hicks hit his 11th double. It was a rough day for Byron Buxton as he also did not get on base in the second game. He is now 3-20 (.150) in his last five games, a streak that most hitters experience once or twice by this point in the season. The Kernels are now 23-9 with the double-header sweep. My honest opinion, and I've said it before, is that I don't care where players play the year that they are drafted. That too months is about adjusting to a lot of things whether it's being a professional, being away from home, getting paid, not going to class, finding a place to live and paying bills. Why not do that in a place where the baseball itself will feel comfortable. As has been said, a college starters numbers out of the bullpen in Elizabethton don't matter a lot to me. The scouting reports mean much more. To me, it starts mattering in their first full year, and the Twins have so many examples in the past decade of college pitcher that move up two or three or even four levels in that year.

Another missed oppurtunity by the Twins?
Seth Stohs replied to Brodin4Calder's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I really, really like Sanchez and touted him the last year... but 5/80 is the highest I would have even considered signing him for. That's what the Tigers gave him, so it wasn't worth the Twins effort to go after him too hard. -
I actually really liked what the Astros did last year. They took a very high upside middle infielder maybe 2-4 spots early (still a top 5-6 pick), got him for a very fair deal, then they were able to get McCullers and Ruiz later because they were going to be tough signs. That played out perfectly for them, but as mww wrote, you don't know that it's going to play out like that either. The Twins aren't afraid to spend. They showed that last year. They'll be smart, but they'll feel convicted that the guy they take is the right guy to attempt to develop!
-
Again, it's about putting the actual prospects where it is best for them, but it's also something where they have to be fair to the affiliates. Cedar Rapids has a good chance for a playoff spot as a first-half champ. Buxton and Walker will move up when 1.) they're ready and have done it for 8-10 weeks instead of 4, and 2.) if they're in a playoff race, they'll keep them there an extra week. At the end of the day, Buxton and Walker will be in Ft. Myers. Will getting there a week or so really make a difference? As for the guys getting an opportunity with the Miracle, it's not unusual, though I don't remember seeing this many moves across the parking lot. All three of them will play with Elizabethton (though Murphy could go to Cedar Rapids to take Walker or Buxton's spot when they do get promoted). Also, Kyle Knudson will likely be off the DL in 2-3 days, and Eddie Rosario will be ready to play in a couple of days too. Doesn't make a lot of sense to have a player or two travel from Cedar Rapids to Ft. Myers only to turn around like a day or two later.

They won't hold anyone back, but they allow the Twins to make decisions on the prospects wisely instead of pushing them too quickly. Don't forget, there are still something like 10-12 players (mostly pitchers) on the Rochester DL." As soon as Meyer and May start throwing more strikes, they'll move up.

It's time for our monthly look into the Twins and members of the Twins organization that are on Twitter. Last month I added some of the staff and media associated with the minor league affiliates. This month there are several new players who have each added a Twitter account including Twins reliever Ryan Pressly and uber-prospect Miguel Sano. I've also now included the percent their Twitter following has increased since both last month and February. It's an interesting look. As always, I encourage you to let me know if there are players or others who should be included. Of course, we encourage you to follow the Twins Daily writers as well. Help us catch up to Miracle pitching coach Ivan Arteaga.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]
First Name Last Name Twitter 5/9 Update 4/15 Update 3/10 Update Feb Update %change past month %change since Feb AJ Achter @ajachter35 491 468 435 416 4.9% 18.0% Bo Altobelli @BoAltobelli 148 140 130 113 5.7% 31.0% Oswaldo Arcia @arciaoswaldo 718 413 378 334 73.8% 115.0% Ivan Arteaga @IvanArteaga 70,737 66,717 61,761 59,958 6.0% 18.0% Tim Atherton @TimAtherton89 226 223 213 206 1.3% 9.7% Luke Bard @Luke_Bard 1,007 1,001 998 721 0.6% 39.7% DJ Baxendale @DBax24 4,173 4,003 3,930 3,906 4.2% 6.8% James Beresford @JamesBeresford2 943 909 841 784 3.7% 20.3% Doug Bernier @dougbernier 215 204 5.4% J.O. It's time for our monthly look into the Twins and members of the Twins organization that are are Twitter. Last month, I added some of the staff and media associated with the minor league affiliates. This month, there are several new players who have added a twitter account including Twins reliever Ryan Pressly and uber-prospect Miguel Sano. I've also now included what percent their Twitter following has increased since last month and also since February. It's an interesting look. As always, I encourage you to let me know if there are players or others who should be included.
