Twins Minor League Report (8/20): Dominant Debut for Stew(art)

On Monday, the Minnesota Twins and the New York Mets played the series finale of a series that started in April. The Twins lost 6-1 and will now head to Detroit where they'll play the Tigers for the next three days. Kyle Gibson made the start and went just 3.2 innings. He was charged with four runs on ten hits and two walks. Immediately following the game, he was demoted to Rochester. The question of "What's next for Kyle Gibson?" can take on any number of meanings for Twins fans. [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]There are the short-term and long-term implications and possibilities to that question. Photo by Betsy Bissen Let's start with the short-term. We know that Gibson's innings would be monitored throughout the season. In the offseason, we heard that Gibson could be limited to 130 to 140 innings. Once spring training came, the front office backed away from giving a hard number of innings, saying they would just monitor how he was pitching and how his arm responded. When I talked to Gibson after the Saturday night game against the White Sox at Target Field, he still maintained that they had not yet been given any timeline. He only said that Terry Ryan and others in the front office only insisted that Gibson be completely honest with them about how his arm, and specifically his elbow was feeling. He said that he continues to feel strong. So, what is next for Kyle Gibson? As it relates to 2013, there are several questions. How much more will he pitch, and in what role? Gibson is a starting pitcher. He is currently at 143.2 combined innings on the season between Rochester and Minnesota. He could make another start or two for the Red Wings. He could make those one or two starts and then be shut down for the season, likely around 155 innings. He could skip the next two starts, and then start for the Red Wings in the playoffs, if they make the playoffs. Gibson could also pitch out of the Red Wings bullpen for the rest of the season (about two weeks). His innings and pitching frequency can be monitored very strictly. Is it possible that we see him in a Twins uniform in September? It may be unlikely, but maybe Gibson is able to work out some things, get some time on the Disabled List to rest, and come back to work a hand full of innings for the Twins. I think the more important question is how you feel about the future of Kyle Gibson. What means more to you? How much do you choose to make of ten starts at the end of his rookie season in his first season back from Tommy John surgery? Do you choose to go back to his scouting reports before Tommy John surgery and how well he pitched during his strong run at Rochester in May and early June? There is a general belief that a pitcher should throw no more than 20% more innings than he did the previous season in an attempt to keep healthy. If Gibson ends the 2013 season with 150 innings pitched, a 20% increase in 2014 would put him at 180 innings. I think that's a pretty solid goal. The scouting reports are what they are. They're something that can help predict how well a pitcher could do. Not how well they will do, but what they possibly can become. In his short time with the Twins, we did see a fastball that sat in the low-90s and touched 94 as we had heard. When he was pitching well, we did see some very good sinking action. We saw that he does have three pitches. What we didn't see were a ton of ground balls. His ground out to fly ball ratio was essentially 1 to 1. His strikeout rate dropped, which is no surprise. We also saw his walk numbers increase. Some of it might just be the big league hitters have better eyes, and maybe those sharp, sinkers and sliders that several AAA hitters get taken by big league hitters when they dip below the zone. It's certainly an adjustment that Gibson will need to, and will, work on before 2014. Gibson will be 26 years old throughout the 2014 season. Certainly, that is not young for a player with just ten big league starts. However, when you consider that he lost half of 2011 and most of 2012, and then still was working back early in 2013 because of the surgery, he's where he should be. For those that think this is old, well, The Twins would get his ages 26-31 years under their control. It's probably fair to say that the big league debut season of Kyle Gibson has been disappointing, but hopefully people can see enough of the big picture not to give up on an arm as talented as Gibson's. That's as silly as giving up on Aaron Hicks because of his 2013 struggles. The truth is that most players come up from the minor leagues and experience some growing pains. The hope is that Gibson will return in 2014, fully healthy, and better off for his struggles. My Opinion It is my opinion that the Twins should give Gibson one more start in Rochester, and then shut him down. Let him enjoy the offseason and just have a regular workout routine without the rehab. I have no doubt in my mind that Gibson will be in the Twins Opening Day rotation, and in the rotation for years to come. What happened in his 51 innings with the Twins this season didn't affect my thoughts on this future. If he had been great, my opinion of his future likely would not have changed. So, what are your thoughts? This is a pretty broad topic, with several parts. It will be interesting to see what the Twins, along with Gibson, decide to do.

Twins Minor League Report (8/13): Twins Acquire Miguel Sulbaran
Seth Stohs posted an article in Minor Leagues
The Rochester Red Wings and the Cedar Rapids Kernels each had the day off on Tuesday. The Red Wings made the long trek back up north from Virginia. The Kernels didn’t play, but they were still in the news. The Twins found out that they received LHP Miguel Sulbaran from the Dodgers as the Player to be Named Later in the Drew Butera trade.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] He has pitched for Great Lakes in the Midwest League throughout this year and will report to the Kernels. Sulbaran pitched in 23 games for Great Lakes, making 16 starts. In total, he was 6-4 with a 3.01 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. In 92.2 innings, he allowed 89 hits, walked 27 and struck out 85. He is just two months older than JO Berrios. Speaking of Berrios, he was put on the Disabled List with a right elbow contusion. I talked with three people familiar with the situation. In his most recent start, he was hit by a line drive in the elbow. However, by the next day, he appeared to be much better. The Twins decided to be cautious, as they should with such a talent, and put him on the Disabled List. One other person told me that the plan was actually to shut him down for a week or two in an attempt to manage his innings and help him be strong for the Midwest League playoffs. In other transactions, lefty David Hurlbut was promoted to Ft. Myers to take the spot of righty Cole De Vries, who was promoted to New Britain. There were actually several games to talk about, and the Twins now have their first 30 home run hitter of the season. See what else happened in the Twins farm system on Tuesday. Rochester Red Wings No Game Scheduled. Game 1 - New Britain Rock Cats 4, New Hampshire 5 Box Score Miguel Sano homered for the 30th time this year (14th with the Rock Cats), but it wasn’t enough in Game 1. Danny Santana went 2-4. Reynaldo Rodriguez added his 19th home run and drove in two runs. DJ Baxendale went all seven innings. Unfortunately, he was charge with five runs and just one was earned. He gave up eight hits (and three of those went for home runs). He walked one and struck out six. Game 2 - New Britain Rock Cats 6, New Hampshire 5 Box Score In the second game, the Rock Cats found themselves down 5-3 going into the bottom of the ninth. Kyle Knudson led off with a double. He scored when the next batter, Angel Morales, doubled. After a sacrifice bunt, Eddie Rosario doubled in the tying run. Understandably, Miguel Sano was intentionally walked. However, a wild pitch advanced Rosario to third, and Sano stole second. New Hampshire decided to walk powerful Reynaldo Rodriguez. However, the fourth pitch was wild and Rosario scored the winning run. Knudson was the one Rock Cats hitter with more than one hit. He was 2-3 and the double was his third. Rosario was 1-3 with a walk and his 14th double. Reynaldo Rodriguez added his 26th double. Matt Hauser made his first start of the year in this bullpen game. He was able to go four innings. He gave up three runs (1 earned) on four hits and a walk. He struck out four. Daniel Turpen came on and gave up three runs on three hits and a walk in two innings. Dakota Watts gave up one hit over two innings to get the Win. Ft. Myers Miracle 4, St. Lucie 5 Box Score Lefty David Hurlbut was promoted from Cedar Rapids and made his Miracle debut. He made less than a handful of starts this season, pitching primarily out of the Kernels bullpen. But, he made the start tonight for Ft. Myers. He began with three scoreless innings. However, he gave up three runs in the fourth. He gave up eight hits, didn’t walk anyone, and struck out four. Nelvin Fuentes came on and struck out three in two scoreless innings. He walked one. Corey Williams got the final two innings. He gave up a big two-run homer in the seventh that proved to be the game’s decider. He gave up the two runs on three hits, no walks and struck out two. Byron Buxton is back to .300 for the Miracle after a 3-4 night. He drove in two runs. Dalton Hicks went 2-4 with his third home run. It was a solo shot. The RBI gives him a combined 97 RBI on the season between Cedar Rapids and Ft. Myers. Cedar Rapids Kernels No Game Scheduled. Elizabethton Twins 6, Danville Braves 3 Box Score It was a good all-around game for the E-Twins. They got a good start from lefty Hein Robb. He gave up one run on five hits in five innings. He did walk four while striking out five. Andre Martinez came on and threw two scoreless innings. He gave up one hit, walked three and struck out two. Ryan Eades came on and pitched the final two innings. He gave up two runs on two hits and two walks. He struck out three. Javier Pimentel was the offensive hero. He was 3-4 with his 11th double and three RBI. Tanner Vavra was 1-2 with a walk and two RBI. Zach Granite extended his hitting streak to eight games. GCL Twins 3, GCL Orioles 1 Box Score Righty Alex Meyer returned to the mound for his second rehab appearance. This time, he was able to go three shutout innings. He gave up two hits, walked two and struck out two. He was replaced by Jared Wilson who was charged with one run on three hits in three innings. He walked three and struck out two. Chih-Wei Hu came on and struck out one over two scoreless innings. He gave up just one hit. Tyler Stirewalt got the save. He didn’t give up a run despite allowing two hits and walking one. Alex Swim went 2-4 with an RBI. Adonis Pacheco was 1-2 with two walks. If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below. -
Every year, every MLB team fills out their 40 man roster. As that is happening, they are also adding minor league free agents and offering them nothing more than an invitation to big league spring training. That is enough to be seen, to get an opportunity. Generally speaking, news of these minor league signings is treated fairly ho-hum. However, the last few years, the Minnesota Twins have done a great job of adding veteran minor league talent. Usually, those players are guys who help the AA and AAA rosters by providing experience and to fill gaps in the minor league system. [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] However, the Twins have had much success in recent years in the free agency realm. Consider in 2011, the Twins signed Caleb Thielbar as a minor league free agent in August. The story has become famous, but right before spring training that year, the Twins signed Andrew Albers. The Twins had a tremendous year of minor league signings prior to the 2012 season. Sure, there were a couple that didn't make it, but the Twins front office deserves credit for targeting some very good players. Here's a look at the Twins minor league signings for 2012: No Time With Twins Steve Pearce - The 1B/OF signed with the Twins, but he spent most of that spring training hurt and was let go before the end of spring training. He went on to spend time in the big leagues with the Orioles, Astros and Yankees. Brendan Wise - The right-handed pitcher from Australia had been terrific in AAA for the Tigers the two previous seasons, but he struggled with Rochester. JR Towles - The catcher who was a former top prospect caused some excitement when the Twins signed him. However, he did very little in AAA and was hurt for a large part of the season. Luke French - The former big league southpaw signed with the Twins and was tremendous early in New Britain. However, he was pretty poor in AAA and went back to the Rock Cats. Cups of Coffee Matt Carson - The 30+ outfielder had spent time in the big leagues with the A's. He was a very solid performer for the Red Wings, and when he was called up to the Twins late in the season, he got 66 at bats. Luis Perdomo - He had spent time with the Padres in 2009 and 2010. He was terrific for New Britain and Rochester in 2012 and earned his promotion to the Twins. However, with the Twins he had no control. He resigned with the Twins this spring but has been inconsistent in the Red Wings bullpen. Sean Burroughs - The former Little League World Series hero signed a minor league deal with the Twins and made the Opening Day roster. He got just 18 plate appearances before being DFAd and sent to Rochester where he spent he rest of the season. Wilkin Ramirez - The Twins actually signed Ramirez before the 2012 season. The former top prospect of the Tigers had spent big league time with Detroit and Atlanta. An injury in spring training meant his season started late, but he showed good power when healthy. This spring, he made the Twins roster out of spring training as an extra outfielder. He missed about two months due to a concussion and has just returned to the Twins. Chris Colabello - The story is well known. The Twins signed Colabello out of the Can-Am League before the 2012 season, and he hit well in New Britain. This spring, he played in the WBC and went to big league camp. He put up incredible numbers in Rochester this season and has been recalled to the Twins several times this season. Can he be part of the future? That will be determined, likely, over the next two months. Majors Contributors PJ Walters - He was signed by the Twins before the 2012 season. The former prospect pitched well enough in the spring and then in Rochester to get a call up. He pitched well until he was injured and then struggled in his return. The same thing happened this year. He went to Rochester and was summoned back to the Twins. In total, he has made 20 starts and pitched 101 innings for the Twins in the past two seasons. Sam Deduno - The enigmatic right-hander had spent time with the Rockies and the Padres in 2010 and 2011, respectively, before the Twins signed him before the 2012 season. Control had plagued him, but he pitched well enough, and the Twins' need was big enough that he got an opportunity. The Twins DFAd him after the season, but then resigned him to a minor league deal. This spring, he was a WBC hero for the Dominican Republic. Unfortunately, he was injured and started the season late. Once he started pitching, it didn't take long for him to get moved up to the Twins. He has gone from walking 6.0 per nine to just 3.4 per nine. He has reduced his HR rate from 1.1 to 0.5. He is looking like a long-term middle of the rotation type. He's now made 29 starts for the Twins and worked 167 innings. Jared Burton - Burton was a very good reliever for the Reds when he was healthy. After missing the majority of two seasons, the Twins signed him to a minor league season. Last year, he was so good in a set up role that the Twins signed him to a two year extension. Although he struggled for a few weeks this season, he has again been very good. He has now pitched in 113 innings in 118 games for the Twins. Casey Fien - Fien had spent time with the Tigers before signing as a minor league free agent before the 2012 season. Though he started off slow at Rochester, he came on very strong for the Red Wings. He was promoted to the Twins and ever since he has been one of the best relievers in the league. In 90 games and 84.1 innings, he has posted a 2.56 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP. I'd say that was a pretty strong minor league free agent class. The 2012 class includes Twins infielder Doug Bernier. At Rochester, Jeff Clement has hit in the middle of the order and Antoan Richardson has been a terrific leadoff hitter. Also consider that Josmil Pinto, Deibinson Romero and Edgar Ibarra all had the opportunity to become free agents last winter but chose to stay with the Twins. Obviously it is not an ideal situation to get so much big league playing time from free minor league free agents. Having three players with ties to independent league, along with a 33-year-old journeyman, and several DFA claims that have played a lot. However, these often are the best stories in baseball as we have seen with Albers, Colabello, Thielbar and others. However, minor league free agency can be an important part of roster building for major league teams. It is one area where the Twins have been quite successful.

Two starting pitchers that began the season in the Minnesota Twins starting rotation pitched very well in the minor leagues on Sunday. That’s probably a big part of the story of the Twins 2013 season. Scott Diamond pitched one whale of a game for the Red Wings while Cole De Vries pitched five very good innings in Ft. Myers. The Twins traded Jamey Carroll on Sunday, and one of the candidates to replace him on the roster had a big game for the Red Wings as well. Miguel Sano continued to mash. There were several firsts in Elizabethton on this night. Speaking of firsts, congratulations to Cedar Rapids’ Adam Walker who became the first player in minor league baseball to tally 100 RBI this season. See what else happened in the Twins farm system on Sunday. Rochester Red Wings 5, Norfolk Tides 0 BoxScore Scott Diamond was sent to AAA, and the hope would be that he would pitch well and quickly return. On Sunday, the lefty threw a complete game shutout. He needed just 106 pitches, and 73 of them were strikes. He gave up just five hits, walked none and struck out four. Eduardo Escobar apparently wants to return to the Twins. Theinfielder went 4-5 with his ninth and tenth doubles, and his fourth stolen base. Deibinson Romero went 2-3 with two walks and a triple. Eric Farris went 2-4 with his 21st stolen base. Ray Olmedo went 2-4. New Britain Rock Cats 5, Reading Fightin Phils 14 BoxScore The Miguel Sano Show just continues, but on this night, the offense was not enough to overcome some poor defense. Matt Summers made the start and went four innings. He gave up five runs on nine hits. He walked one, hit one and did not strike out any. Jose Gonzalez came on and gave up five runs, but just one was earned, in 0.2 innings. He gave up one hit, walked one and hit one. Matt Hauser came in and gave up a home run before getting the final out. Dan Sattler struck out two in his perfect inning. Blake Martin gave up three runs on five hits and a walk in two innings. He struck out four. Sano went 2-5 with his 11th double and 13th home run. It was his 29th combined homer. Dan Rohlfing went 3-5. Reynaldo Rodriguez hit his 18th home run. Jordan Parraz hit his 11thhomer. Ft. Myers Miracle 3, Jupiter Hammerheads 1 BoxScore The Miracle got two wins on the day. They finished a game started on June 28th. Steve Gruver went three innings, and then Chad Rodgers went the final 3.2 innings. Kennys Vargas led the offense by going 2-4. The regularly scheduled game became a seven-inning game.Cole De Vries got the start and went five shutout innings. He gave up just two hits, walked none and struck out four. Adrian Salcedo gets the save as he gave up an unearned run over the final two innings. He gave up two hits and walked one. Stephen Wickens went 2-4 with his 15th double. Dalton Hicks went 2-3 with his third double and two RBI. Cedar Rapids Kernels 8, Kane County Cougars 4 BoxScore If there was a race to 100 RBI in the entire minor leagues, the winner would be the Kernels’ Adam Walker. On Sunday, he went 2-4 with his seventh triple and his 26th home run. The homer went over the batter’s eye in centerfield, and drove in three runs. It accounted for his 100th, 101st, and 102nd RBI. Jorge Polanco went 2-4 with his 30thdouble. Travis Harrison went 2-5 with his 28th double. Jonathan Murphy went 2-5. Hudson Boyd returned to the starting rotation for the Kernels. He went 2.2 innings. He gave up just one run on two hits. He walked six batters and struck out two. Christian Powell came on and went the next 4.1 innings. He gave up three runs on seven hits. He walked three and struck out four. Alex Muren recorded his second save. He struck out two over two one-hit innings. Elizabethton Twins 12,Burlington Royals 5 BoxScore Down 5-4 heading into the 7th inning, the E-Twins scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach. Stuart Turner went 2-4 with two walks, his fifth double and his first home run. Tanner Vavra went 2-4 with a walk. Zach Granite went 2-5 with a walk. Zach Larson went 2-5. Ryan Walker went 1-3 with three walks and his third and fourth stolen base. Rory Rhodes had just one hit, but his grand slam was the biggest hit of the game. Yorman Landa started and went the first four innings. He gave up five runs (3 earned) on seven hits and three walks. He struck out two. Tanner Mendonca got his first win. He came in in relief. He threw two scoreless innings and gave up one hit, walked one and struck out two. Aaron Slegers recorded his first save. He struck out three over three perfect innings. GCL Twins No Game Scheduled. The Minnesota Twins have announced the they have traded infielder Jamey Carroll to the Kansas City Royals. He gives the Royals depth in the middle infielder. The Twins will receive a Player to be Named Later or Cash. Carroll signed a two-year contract with the Twins in November of 2011. The 39 year old started his stint with the Twins as their shortstop before moving over to second base. This year, he has been a utility infielder and played in a limited basis.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] I'm certain it is no coincidence that he has played quite a bit more in recent weeks, particularly at third base. Likely the Twins were trying to increase his value, maybe in an attempt to get an actually Player (to be named later) rather than just Cash. Trading within the division has become more commonplace for the Twins in recent years. Last year, they traded Francisco Liriano to the White Sox. Two years ago, the Twins traded Delmon Young to the Tigers. Three years ago, the Twins received Carl Pavano from Cleveland. The Twins have now traded the #1 and #5 players from the list I wrote at the July trade deadline of players most likely to be traded. This is a good situation for Carroll, a classy veteran who gets a chance to play on a competing team.

Twins Minor League Report (8/10): Berrios Dazzles
Seth Stohs commented on Seth Stohs's blog entry in SethSpeaks.net
The Minnesota Twins continued to hit some home runs inChicago on Saturday. A couple of New Britain’s power hitters joined the fun byhitting some long balls as well. The Cedar Rapids Kernels offense showed up,and one of its top pitching prospects put him a great performance. One of thenewcomers to Elizabethton came up with a huge hit. Meanwhile, an unlikelypitcher threw 13.2 consecutive scoreless innings to start his AAA career. Ofcourse, the Red Wings needed to play 12 innings in Norfolk. Will the game’s results make for a good, long trip back to Rochester, or an extra-long trip? See what happened and more on Saturday in the Twins minorleague parks: Rochester Red Wings 2,Norfolk Tides 3 (12 innings) BoxScore Pat Dean was terrific in his second AAA start. He went sixinnings without giving up a run. He then gave up his first AAA run with twoouts in the seventh. He gave up one more in the 8th frame. In all,he went 7.2 innings and was charged with two runs on six hits. He walked noneand struck out six. Cody Eppley came in and got the final out of the 8thinning. Aaron Thompson started the 9th inning, but Shairon Martis came on and pitched a scoreless ninth and tenth inning. AJ Achter came on andpitched a scoreless 11th inning. He got the first two outs of the 12thframe. However, the third batter doubled, and Jonathan Schoop singled in thewalk-off run. The Red Wings bats just didn’t show up on this night. Theywere scoreless going into the ninth inning. Aaron Hicks, who had entered thegame as a pinch runner for Chris Parmelee, came up to bat. He singled in DarinMastroianni to cut the lead to 2-1. Jeff Clement came up and singled in Hickswith the tying run. In the top of the 12th inning, Josmil Pinto ledoff with a double, but did not score. Hicks went 2-2 in his short time in thegame. The Twins had a full day of baseball on Friday, playing a day-night double header in Chicago against the White Sox. Fortunately, it was a day with a couple of exciting wins for Minnesota. Amazingly, each and every run scored by the Twins came off home runs, including several by players who spent a significant time in the Twins minor league system this year. Chris Colabello hit one in the first game. Chris Herrmann hit one in the second game. Last year’s minor league hitter of the year for the Twins, Oswaldo Arcia, hit one in each game. His 10th inning homer in Game 2 gave the Twins the win. [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] Of course, the two starters (Kyle Gibson and Liam Hendriks) spent most of their season in Rochester as well. Hendriks was optioned to Rochester following the game. He had been the Twins 26th man on Friday, something they were able to do because of the double header. It was a big day for the Twins, and there was a lot going on throughout the minor league system too. A couple of top pitching prospects made appearances in the GCL on rehab today. Adam Walker is closing in on Miguel Sano and Chris Colabello atop the Twins organizational home run leaders. He’s also about to become the first member of the 100 RBI club. Check out what else happened in the Twins Minor League system on Friday: Rochester 2, Norfolk 11 Box Score You know it’s not a good game when the highlight is that TWO position players had the chance to pitch for the Red Wings. Not only did they pitch, they threw THREE scoreless innings and didn’t give up a hit. Down 11-2 going into the bottom of the 6th, Gene Glynn called on outfielder Jermaine Mitchell to pitch. The lefty from North Carolina – Greensboro, where he did some pitching, worked two scoreless innings. He gave up just one base runner, on a walk. After his two frames, he went out to right field, and right fielder Brian Dinkelman came to the mound. He pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, and one of the outs was a strikeout of Alex Liddi on a fastball clocked at 88 mph. So, that’s the good stuff. Unfortunately, Red Wings starter PJ Walters lasted just two innings and was charged with seven runs on nine hits and two walks. He struck out two. Luis Perdomo came on. He went the next 2.1 innings. He gave up four runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out just one. Edgar Ibarra came on and got the final two outs of that fifth inning. The Red Wings bats managed just three hits in the game. Deibinson Romero did get on base with three walks. New Britain 5, Akron 6 Box Score It has been a rough season for righty BJ Hermsen. Following his time in big league spring training, he was hurt. When he came back, he struggled in the rotation and was sent to the bullpen. It’s strange because he was the clear choice for Twins minor league pitcher of the year in 2012, most of which he spent with the Rock Cats. He pitched I the Eastern League All Start game. He is getting another opportunity here late in the season to start. Tonight, he went 3.1 innings. He gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out just one. Ryan O’Rourke came on and gave up an unearned run on one hit and one walk over two innings. He struck out two. Daniel Turpen came on and struck out two over the next 1.2 innings. Blake Martin ended things with a scoreless inning. Miguel Sano went 2-4 with his ninth double. Jordan Parraz was also 2-4. Nate Hanson went 1-1 with two walks. Eddie Rosario hit his 13th double and walked. Danny Santana hit his eighth triple. Ft. Myers 7, Charlotte 3 Box Score Since Miguel Sano and Eddie Rosario were promoted to New Britain, we have not read the name of Kennys Vargas as frequently in these Miracle game reports. In this game, he went 4-5 and drove in four of the Miracle runs. Matt Koch went 3-5 and hit his 19th double, the team’s only extra base hit in the game. Levi Michael had a single and a walk, and he stole his 16th and 17th bases. Taylor Rogers had another impressive start and improves to 10-5 with a 2.90 ERA. The lefty went 6.1 innings, and gave up just one run. He allowed four hits, walked three and struck out seven. He was replaced by Corey Williams who gave up two runs in the next 2.1 innings. He gave up four hits, hit two batters and struck two out. Tyler Jones came on with two outs in the 9th and got a strikeout to record his fourth Miracle save. Cedar Rapids 7, Beloit 4 Box Score Just to think, this was a 3-2 game after six innings, but the Kernels offense exploded after that. Adam Walker was 2-5, including his 25th home run. His two RBI give him 99 RBI on the season. Max Kepler was 2-4 with his sixth home run. Travis Harrison was 2-5, and his 27th double gave the Kernels a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Joel Licon, Jeremias Pineda and Niko Goodrum each had two hits. Tyler Grimes went 1-2 with three walks. Tim Shibuya made his first start of the season. He was limited to just 2.2 innings. He gave up two runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out four. Mason Melotakis’s innings are being controlled with him in the bullpen. He came on and went the next 2.1 innings. He gave up just one hit and one walk, but no runs. He struck out two. Dallas Gallant struck out three over the next two innings. Brandon Bixler gave up two runs on three hits in his inning. Madison Boer came on for the ninth and got his fourth save. He struck out one. Elizabethton 3, Johnson City 4 Box Score Kuo Hua Lo made his first start of the season. He went four innings and gave up two runs on three hits. He walked two and struck out two. Luke Bard made his first E-Town appearance of the year. He gave up one run on one hit in one inning. Austin Malinowki gave up only a walk over two innings, but the runner scored and he gets charged with the loss. Ethan Mildren pitched a scoreless inning. Logan Wade led the offense. He went 2-3 with a walk. Zach Granite went 1-2 and walked. GCL Twins 2, GCL Orioles 4 Box Score It was a day of returns and rehabs in the GCL. Right-hander Alex Meyer made his first rehab appearance. He started and gave up one run on three hits and a walk. He struck out five. In the first inning, he struck out the first two batters. He gave up a two-out single before striking out the fourth batter. In the second inning, he struck out the first batter. Then he gave up two not-hard-hit singles. He struck out the fourth batter. However, after walking the next batter, he was removed from the game, having met his pitch count. Meyer was replaced by Derek Penilla with the bases loaded. Penilla walked in Meyer’s run before getting a strikeout to end the inning. Penilla was then replaced by lefty-hander Pedro Hernandez who was making his first rehab appearance. The lefty struggled in his first inning. He gave up two runs on four hits, but those were the only runs he allowed in three total innings. He gave up six hits, walked none and struck out two. Following Hernandez, Kohl Stewart made his first appearance after cutting his foot on a shell in the ocean. The 2012 first-round pick threw two hitless, scoreless innings. He walked one and struck out two. Brandon Easton walked one in the eighth. Miguel Gonzalez struck out the side in the ninth. Chad Christensen went 2-4 in the game with his sixth double. He was the lone player with more than one hit. On Tuesday, we took a look at Minnesota Twins second baseman Brian Dozier and noted that his performance is certainly trending in the right direction, and that continued on Wednesday night in Kansas City. Today, we’ll shift to the other side of the infield and try to determine whether Dozier’s keystone combination partner Pedro Florimon is meeting or exceeding expectations. If I’m being honest, my expectations for Mr. Florimon were not terribly high. In fact, when I posted my 2013 Twins hitting predictions, I thought that he would be Designated for Assignment in June with an OPS below .500.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] Strangely, I was not all that impressed by his defense in his late-season run at shortstop with the Twins. Looking at some defensive metrics, they lined up pretty closely with those of Brian Dozier, who many fans thought was pretty bad at shortstop. So, let’s start with the defense. When the Twins claimed Florimon after he had been DFAd by the Orioles, he was known as a tremendous defensive shortstop. Offensive expectations were very low, but that only meant that his defense must be incredible. Reports I was hearing out of New Britain and Rochester last year didn’t disagree with that. They were seeing a great glove man. But again, I thought he was disappointing, relative to expectations, with the glove in 2012. So, let’s jump to 2013. How is Florimon doing defensively? He had four errors in about the first week of the season. Not a great start to the season, but in total, he has just ten errors this season. Now to the more advanced defensive metrics. According to fangraphs, Florimon ranks third among MLB shortstops with a 7.7 UZR. Only the Braves Andrelton Simmons (17.7) and the Rays Yunel Escabar (8.2) rank ahead of him right now. By DWAR (Defensive WAR), Florimon’s (1.9) is second to Simmons’ 4.2. Third on the list is former Twins shortstop, JJ Hardy at 1.5. If Range Factor is what you prefer, then Florimon is Number One on your list. His 5.46 is 0.50 ahead of Simmons’ 4.96. The Number Two AL shortstop is Seattle’s Brendan Ryan at 4.30. So, from a defensive perspective, he has been very good. For me, that’s actually a little bit better than I expected. So, let’s turn to the offense. My expectations were incredibly low so it won’t take a whole lot to be better than my expectations for him with the bat. Overall this year, in 300 plate appearances, he is hitting .232/.286/.353 (.639) with 12 doubles, seven home runs and 35 RBI. Looking at those numbers with no context says that they are not very good numbers. So, let’s look at how his numbers rank with other big league shortstops. Of 14 shortstops with more than 200 plate appearances, only Seattle’s Brendan Ryan has a lower batting average. Of the 14 shortstops, only Ryan and Kansas City’s Alcides Escobar have a lower on-base percentage. Of the 14 shortstops, only Ryan, Escobar, the Yankees’ Jayson Nix and the Rangers’ Elvis Andrus have a lower slugging percentage. Those same four players are the only ones who have an OPS lower than the .639 that Florimon boasts. In general, Florimon’s offense has been pretty poor, but he’s not the worst shortstop in baseball offensively, which is what I expected. Imagine if the Twins were paying him as much as the Rangers are paying Elvis Andrus!! So, when you combine the offense of Pedro Florimon with his defense, what happens? Well, if you believe in WAR, the answer might surprise you. Here are the WAR rankings for the shortstops with more than 200 plate appearances: 1. Jhonny Peralta 3.5 2. JJ Hardy 2.4 3. Yunel Escobar 2.3 4. Elvis Andrus 2.1 5. Pedro Florimon 2.0 6. Alexei Ramirez 1.8 7. Stephen Drew 1.7 8. Jose Reyes 1.7 9. Erick Aybar 1.3 10. Jed Lowrie 1.1 11. Asdrubal Cabrera 1.0 12. Mike Aviles 0.8 13. Jayson Nix 0.5 14. Brendan Ryan 0.3 15. Alcides Escobar 0.2 SUMMARY Has Pedro Florimon met or exceeded our expectations? Well, my expectations were immensely low. Again, I expected his defense to be like he was last year, which is to say, look like he should be a good shortstop but the numbers don’t match. I thought he wouldn’t hit at all, especially over the course of a full season where his weaknesses could be more and more exposed. He hasn’t hit great at all, but much better than I expected. So, maybe not to the extent as Brian Dozier, but Pedro Florimon has exceeded my expectations by a decent amount. We said before the season if he could post a .600 OPS and play great defense, we would be happy. I think we can be happy with Pedro Florimon.
