I followed these Twins bloggers when they were separate (i.e., sethspeaks.net, etc.) and in the Twins Centric format (strib). Still getting used to their new website format and whether I will be just a reader or a part time commenter.

  1. That sounds about right. Or the Twins, after the blown save ties the game, will blow the chance at a winning the ALCS in walk-off fashion after taking a knee by being too conservative. Finally they lose in extra innings. Which of these do you remember? Gary Anderson's perfect regular season as a field goal kicker Gary Anderson's post season miss. Taking a knee.
  2. Yeah, that still kind of hurts still. The contract wasn't for more money, just for more years.
  3. I think the chances of both (1) The Twins making the 2015 world series and (2) Hunter making the HOF are both low to borderline impossible. But the one thing that would change my opinion, more than any other likely possibility, would be a deep 2015 playoff run. I think it would help both: add to his credentials because he and Molitor are the obvious changes from a 90 loss team from 2014 show off/remind HOF voters of his most affable side on a national stage. IMO, the career stats would have to be above 400 HRs and.or significantly closer to 3000 hats to really get HOF voters to support him in large enough numbers to get him in.
  4. Add me to the camp, so long I can't remember. I think I remember looking for something about Twins minor leaguers and I found Seth. For a minor league/Twins junky, you couldn't ask for more than Seth. I am so old I remember seeing game in Orlandok, when they were a Twins affiliate, and Knoblauch had just moved to 2B from ss because he had a clearer path to the major and his arm was nothing special (foreshadowing?). I sat in the bleachers next to the wife of the opening day starter, a young prospect out of panama. Can't remember who he was, but I am sure Seth could give stats on him if he was pressed. Probably off the top of his head, too.
  5. There are some numbers that Jack Morris excelled at, but they are stats that are never used in HOF comparisons. (I am citing his by memory, it was stated either on Pos blog or on ESPN on Wed): Morris was the number 1 inning eater of his era, and he was 18% ahead of the #2. Its not a stat that is often appreciated by HOF writers, but GMs writing checks value it highly. If it gets you a higher salary, why isn't it part of the equation? Even though I think Morris should be in the HOF, I have to admidt that I am partly pissed it took them soooooo long to let Blyleven in, and some of the arguments are the same arguments (i.e., but look at pitcher xxx). Blyleven is obviously more deserving than Morris, but they are both being disprected in the discussion as a whole.

  7. I think starting pitching evaluation for the HOF is pretty harsh. There seems to more and more disparity between how careers are evaluated and how a GM is evaluated after a free agent signing or a trade is made. And the HOF analysis is looking, well, dated. This might be a controversial opinion, but I will throw it out there anyway. There are three LF from Fenway in HOF. A lot of statistics make them look really good. But if you had traded the #3 on the list (Jim Rice) for Jack Morris, how would view the General Manager in hindsight? How about for Yaz? I think I would take Jack Morris, not because he was better than other pitching HOF canidates, but because its a commodity that is harder to replace. It worked out well for two separate teams to pick up Morris as a free agent. I rather doubt Rice or even Yaz could have had the same impact. If you wanted to see the best HOF stats, you would be totally wrong to take on Morris. But if you wanted to win,... So you could really say that my opinion is that the HOF has too many corner OFers and not enough starting pitching. Kind of the like the Twins over the last 3 years. I am not saying that Morris is more deserving than some of the other canidates. I am saying more starting pitching canidates are deserving. Pretty much after what we have been seeing, for the 2014 Twins I would take any of the pitchers that have been mentioned over another corner OF.
  8. Seems like the cost of Tanaka will be about the price that Santana cost the Mets. Santana already had a Cy Young in the MLB at that time. The market may have changed some, but has the philosophy of the Twins changed? Another way to look at it is you are approaching Joe Mauer money. Looks very good in Japan, but not even 1 IP in MLB.
  9. If the Twins can move on from Justin Morneau, who did so much for this organization in the past, it can move on from Rick Anderson. I would rather give Liam Hindriks a chance with a new Twins pitching coach than Rick Anderson a chance with another Twins minor leaguer. Either way, one of them is likely going to be with another organization next year. And they might do very well with that organziation. But they haven't done well together.
  10. This sounds very reasonable. Unless something forces an early decision (like a massive trade offer), wait on it. More information will only make the decision easier and better grounded. Love this series of articles. Twins Dailey staff did a nice job coming up with this concept.
  11. I saw him in I think it was his 2nd game for the Kernals. He was playing RF in that game and made some real long runs after fly balls. He didn't let up, even though the score was lopsided. My take away impression on Murphy was he wasn't going to be out-hustled by anyone else on the team.
  12. Yeah, he hit a ball to almost straight away center that the CF caught up with. It really wasn't that close to being a HR in that part of the park, but it was hit a long way. The 3 walks sound impressive, but Delmon Young might have walked 3 times the way pitchers were approaching the strike zone last night. From both teams.
  13. The outdoor barbaque closes at 8:30, it was only the bottom of the 5th. The official time of 3:37 minutes seems like an abreviated time, I thought it was 4 hours when I left. Maybe the game started late. I took a cat nap around inning 7 and the usher told me he felt the same way about the game. I feel for Dalton Hicks day, his day looked real frustrating, more from the results than from the effort. Aside from hitting the other teams pitcher, he had a critical throwing error because he tried to turn 2 with the bases loaded, throwing behind the runner and the ball ended up in left. The next play,.. play hit to same position, but he took the easy out at first. Earlier he came up just short on dive for a ball that ended up as a double. Lot of effort and mostly just bad results to show for it.
  14. Two things in this pitcher: Powell in his wind up (this is after he gave up his only hit). Also, you can see the bleachers in left where Polanco hit his 3 run homer. It landed in the last row of the bleachers, about 20 feet to the right of the foul pole.
  15. I made my first live Kernels game. I want to add a couple of notes from what I saw: Powell's only allowed hit came with 2 outs in the 6th. Through 5 2/3 he had a no-hitter giong. And the defense looked very sharp behind him. Licon made a number of nice plays at 3rd and Polanco doubled off a batter who had walked on a sharp line drive. In the 3rd inning, there is a runner at 3rd. The visiting pitcher (DeLoach) walks Goodrum, the catcher goes to the mound. In the first inning, there was a runner at 3rd and nobody out and DeLoach walked 3 hitters (okay, 1 was a HBP), struck out 3 hitters -- so he had given free passes to 4 batters with a runner at 3rd and its only the 3rd inning. The catcher goes to the mound, what do you think he tells DeLoach? Well, first pitch, Palonca sends one 5 rows deep in the left field bleachers. Left fielder barely moved.
