  1. Oh, and another not from Christopher Crawford: Bryant had a good weekend 3 walks, HR, double and a few hits. Here is what a NL scout had to say: "I’ve said all year that it’s not just about Bryant’s power,” an NL West scout told me. “Obviously that’s the standout tool, but he’s not a one note guy. Does he get pitched around? Of course, but a lot of hitters will get frustrated by that and get too aggressive. That hasn’t been the case for him. I think he’s got star potential in his bat.”
  2. A few draft notes from Christopher crawford: Gray went 9 innings, 3 hits, 12/1 k/bb ratio. Note from a scout: "It was impressive,” an AL scout said. “When you throw as hard as he does and then come back with a slider like that, it really isn’t fair. The last couple of weeks he struggled to finish off hitters, but that obviously wasn’t the case today. If the changeup gets anywhere near the level the other two pitches get, then you have a special prospect. But he’s pretty darn good without it.” Appel went 8 innings, 1 ER, 3 hits, 9/1 k/bb ratio: note from an NL scout “I’m glad his year is over, to be honest with you,” an NL Scout said. “There really isn’t anything more to learn about the guy. I’m sure as a competitor he’d love to be out there playing in the tournament but there’s nothing left for him to prove, he’s the most complete pitcher in this class and it isn’t particularly close.” Manaea didn't pitch this week but here is the note from a scout: "He’s not a first round prospect to me,” an NL scout said. “I don’t see how he can be. When you’re fastball is sitting mid 80’s a couple of weeks ago with a 45 (on the 20-80 scouting scale) slider and 50 change, that’s a back end starter. I’m not taking a back end starter in the first thirty picks.”
  3. Welcome to the forums! Its a great group here and I'm glad you have enjoyed the draft coverage. Last years draft brought in a ton of talent so hopefully this one will too.
  4. Sorry, meant to say Stewart/Frazier OR Shipley specifically under slot. In BA's recent draft they mentioned the Marlins might take Shipley to save money at 6: "The industry buzz continues to be that the Marlins will look to save money with their first-round selection. Miami is expected to cut a deal with Shipley or McGuire, with New Mexico corner infielder D.J. Peterson a third option. Frazier and Meadows might factor in here as well." If they could cut a deal with him at 6 how big of a discount can we get? As I say this, I'm not huge on Shipley but I much rather have him on the cheap over Moran at full slot.
  5. Count me on the other side. If the big 3 are gone give me Stewart, Frazier, or Shipley under slot so we can grab Boldt/Serrano in the second. I don't trust Moran's glove.
  6. Baxendale could be a steal as a 10th rounder last year but let's not get ahead of ourselves. With his college experience he is just doing what he is supposed to be doing. His AA numbers will tell the real story. As I say this if he turns out to be a back of the rotation guy that's a HUGE win for the Twins.
  7. This is up above but I feel it is worth posting twice: "For all the skepticism about Sano’s defense at third, scouts who have seen him this year don’t see him moving any time soon. It’s worth noting that Sano leads all Florida State League third basemen in total chances, putouts and assists and is third among FSL third basemen in range factor." Just the idea of Sano playing third in the bigs, even if it is only for a few years, puts a huge smile on my face. Maybe moving him back a few steps has really helped.
  8. Haha, yeah, me either. Hey, when you are a beast like Sano you can have whatever nickname you want.
  9. For the 7th installment of BA Prospect Hot Sheet the Twins had two make the list. Gibson comes in at 3 after throwing his second complete game in 3 starts. Here is what BA had to say: "A pitcher throwing a nine-inning shutout is a rare feat in the minors, but Gibson’s done it twice in his last three starts. He has tended to alternate good starts with bad ones so far—his two shutouts sandwiched an outing in which he gave up seven hits in three innings—but overall he’s been solid in his first full season back after Tommy John surgery. His season line includes a 3.25 ERA and 46-to-14 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 52 2/3 Triple-A innings." The second player is a very familiar name in Sano showing up on In the Team Photo section. This is his 5th time to make the list which is insane. Here is what they had to say: "El Rey had another good week, crushing seven extra-base hits for high Class A Fort Myers, including three home runs. He even stole three bases in three tries, giving him seven for the season. For all the skepticism about Sano’s defense at third, scouts who have seen him this year don’t see him moving any time soon. It’s worth noting that Sano leads all Florida State League third basemen in total chances, putouts and assists and is third among FSL third basemen in range factor" I'm driving to Dallas this afternoon so I won't be able to post the questions tell tomorrow but I will get them up. 10. BA released a best tool list for the 2013 Mlb draft. Here it is: Best Tools: 2013 Draft - BaseballAmerica.com
  11. At one point he was definitely going to be a top 5 pick and now he could fall into the teens. Has a great fastball and a chance to have three above pitches but he is way too inconsistent for my liking. Also, he has a very violent delivery which is a red flag for some teams. Does have front of the rotation stuff though.
  12. Bleacher report released a new mock draft a few days ago. Both of their experts have the Twins taking Stewart. Link below: 2013 MLB Mock Draft: Bleacher Report's 1st-Round Projection Battle | Bleacher Report
  13. Think the Twins need pitchers in the upcoming draft?Want to know the best pitchers in the draft?or those of you playing catch up john Sickels released a pretty good article about the Key Pitchers in the 2013 draft. Link below: MLB 2013 draft: Key pitchers to know - SBNation.com
  14. Over at Crawfish Boxes, Astros SB Nation forum, they talked about McDaniel's tweet and posted a few other ones by a local writer. Interesting read for those of you really hoping the Astros grab Moran. Astros 2013 MLB Draft Notes: Colin Moran Making Push For First Selection - The Crawfish Boxes
  15. An OK day for Buxton. 2-4 with a walk, a steal, 2 RBIs and a double. Problem is he k'd twice and was caught stealing once.
  16. Both fell, or will fall, for injury related reasons but Giolito's was more server. Giolito needed TJ's while as of now Manaea has only had hip/shoulder soreness. Giolito's representative told teams if they take him he isn't coming cheap and the Nats went over slot to get him. Currently no one knows what Manaea is asking.
  17. The Twins can go right under 5% their total pool allowance extra and only suffer money penalties. After 5% you lose picks. Which should give the Twins about 500k extra or something.
  18. I see zero chance Manaea falls that far unless Boras tells people not to take him. Even if he fell to the Twins for signability issues they would have to go WAY under slot at 4 to even think about it.
  19. Let's see if I can answer all these. There are only two reasons to go under slot in the first round. First is because you are cheap and want save money ala the Marlins last year. Second is because you plan to save money on your first pick to spend over slot later. Seeing the Twins spent more money than anyone last year and pressure to draft well we can reasonably establish they fall into the second reason to go under slot. The big question you ask, wouldn't teams need a lot of luck to have their guys fall to them in the second round? Basic answer is sort of... Obviously no one exactly knows who is taking who but it is part of the front offices job to have an idea. Scouts talk to other scouts. Scouts gage signabilty by talking to players .Scouts recognize other scouts/front office types and report it. If a team is spending money/time to send multiple scouts to watch a guy clearly they are interested. Does that mean they will take that player? Of course not and that is where the luck comes in. No one really knows how the draft will precede. As to the who. Majority of the players will be HSers or college juniors who fell because of health concerns. Here is a list Matt Garrioch put together about signability issue guys: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2013/5/20/4344286/2013-mlb-draft-players-with-signability-questions
  20. Fiddle sticks...you are right. My bad!
  21. I don't remember where people had Correa in the mocks, currently there isnt a single mock out there with Moran going before the Indians, but I remember Correa in the up coming days being linked heavily with the Astros/Twins/mariners.
  22. Mike is here to argue BPA vs Need. This is what keeps 90% of the draft/prospect forums going!
  23. While he was a surprise pick at #1 it wasn't because of talent. Sickels had Correa as his #1. BA had him at #2. Law mentioned he had scouts tell him that they wouldn't be surprised if Correa ended being the best prospect from the draft based on talent. Anyone who has followed the draft knows Moran isn't in the same conversation talent wise as the people ahead of him. The Astros are doing their homework. Also, like with Stewart trying build up leverage by using "I want to go to college" I bet that's what they are doing. Making it public that they can take a guy under slot to build leverage.
  24. They hesitated last year. The Twins are going to take the BPA.
  25. Jason Churchill and Christopher Crawford put out Targets for 2013 Draft articles today. Yes, they are insider but here is what they said about the Twins. Draft Strategy: The Twins have been all over the board in recent years, taking collegians Kyle Gibson, Alex Wimmers and Levi Michael in the first round over the past four drafts. Along the way, however, they have mixed in upside high school picks, including Buxton at No. 2 overall a year ago. This draft has three players (Mark Appel, Jonathan Gray andKris Bryant) who are considered a cut above the rest, so the Twins could go in any number of directions at No. 4 Possible fits were listed as Stewart, McGuire, and Meadows. This is what they said about Stewart: Stewart would fill the biggest need in the organization -- high-upside talent on the mound -- and he brings big-time athleticism to the table suggesting, having earned a scholarship to play QB at Texas A&M. The signing bonus he could at No. 4 would probably prevent him from setting foot on the college gridiron.
