  1. Everyone seems to have Gordon pegged for the Twins pick.
  2. Callis wrote an article on the SS in this draft class: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/nick-gordon-trea-turner-headline-drafts-top-middle-infielders?ymd=20140527&content_id=77000486&vkey=news_mlb
  3. We are 10 days away from the mlb draft! Here is crawford's new big board: http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2014/05/board-2014-volume-vi/
  4. Gordon is 6'1 and about 180 lbs with room still to fill out. While Dee is faster than his brother he never had the hands/feel/arm for short stop. Nick has all those things and is profiled to be a plus defender. I think his upside is teens HRs, ~.280 BA, and 30 SBs with elite SS defense. Also, Law/Crawford pegged him as the safest HS position player for whatever that is worth. As for the Hultzen comparison the point was both of their value is linked to quickness to the bigs. Hultzen was selected before more elite prospects because he was safe/quick to the bigs. Once he got injured that negates that added value.
  5. All prospects have the chance to bust. We have seen time and time again the safest and quickness to the bigs flame out.
  6. I agree. With the #5 pick we should be aiming for something a little higher.
  7. Callis mentioned in his recent mock there is a top tier of 5 players. Aiken, Rodon, Kolek, Jackson, and Gordon. I would be happy with any of them. Outside of them I have Holmes next.
  8. Nola really has no projection left. Freeland has some but I doubt either becomes #2 starters. Law saw Nola yesterday and here is what he said: "I don't see No. 1 or No. 2 starter upside with Nola -- what you see here is what you'll get. But I also think you could sign him, run him right out to Double-A and get him on your major league roster by next April." Top 5 picks should have higher ceilings. No matter how advanced a pitcher is you can't bank on them being safe. Just ask the Mariners how well that turned out after using the #2 overall pick on Hultzen in 2011.
  9. New mock draft by maybe the best in the bizz , Jim Callis. With the 5th pick he has the Twins taking..........Kolek. Here is his full mock: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/mock-draft-astros-might-take-prep-pitcher-aiken-no-1?ymd=20140523&content_id=76511650&vkey=news_mlb
  10. Ryan Stanek, another big stuff no command pitcher, who was a potential top 5 pick last year fell to 29 last year but not out of the 1st round. I find it hard to believe that Beede would make it by all the teams with multiple picks before the Twins.
  11. With answers from Law's chat and Manuel's mock they suggest there is a none-zero chance that Kolek could fall to the Twins at #5. A lot would have to break right so I won't get too excited. Also, here is a question in Law's chat about the Twins: Any gut feeling on where the Twins will lean toward with their first pick? Klaw (2:42 PM) Gordon or Nola. Ton of more great draft questions in the chat: http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/50650/mlb-insider-keith-law
  12. Few questions from Law's chat regarding teams in front of us: What should the Cubs do in the draft if Aiken, Rodon, and Kolek go 1, 2, 3? Klaw (2:10 PM) I could see them taking someone like Conforto and cutting a decent deal, going under slot but not wildly so, then going after pitching with their next few selections. They could do the same with Aaron Nola, just figuring they'd be getting a surefire big leaguer who gets there quick even without the ceiling, but I don't know if they'd get a huge discount with Nola so likely to go 2-7. Can you see a scenario where one of Aiken, Kolek, or Rodon gets to the Cubs and they pass?) Klaw (2:27 PM) I could see them passing on Kolek but not the other two. Doesn't mean they will, just that they might. But I also have a hard time seeing Aiken or Rodon getting there. I saw one mock with the White Sox choosing Alex Jackson, but you have mentioned they are all in on one of the three pitchers. Who do you see them leaning towards at this point? Thanks Klaw (2:18 PM) Pitchers. I think there's zero chance they take Jackson. Only hearing them really on Kolek and Nola right now The White Sox taking Nola would be a mistake at 3, no? Klaw (2:31 PM) I don't think so. Kid probably has 70 fastball command right now.
  13. New mock draft from BA is up and there is a shake up in the top 5 picks. Twins end up taking kolek. Here is the link: http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/2014-draft-preview-shakeup-atop-mock-draft-3-0/
  14. A note on the Law tweet, with how few top talents are left playing it shouldn't be that much of a surprise.
  15. From Law: White Sox in heavy on Nola today - I saw Kenny Williams Jr and I was told reinsdorf is here too.
  16. Wow....what an odd mock. A lot of strange picks.
  17. In college we don't, at least fans don't, have all the fancy stats like we do with the pros. We have certain numbers but a lot of it is the eye test. Early break vs late break vs no break. Run to the right vs run to the left vs no run at all. For change ups especially it is release point that is important (trying to make sure it is the same as your fastball). Velocity difference definitely is important. Nola is a very polarizing pitcher because while his plus command is evident his stuff is debated. Heck, here are two different write ups on his spitches: Mlb.com: 60 fastball, 50 slider, 60 change up. Nola isn't physical or overpowering, but he has exquisite command of his three-pitch arsenal. He effortlessly works at 91-93 mph with his fastball, which plays up because his low three-quarters arm slot produces sink and he can locate the pitch wherever he wants. His changeup is his best secondary pitch, grading as plus at times, and he can throw his three-quarters breaking ball for strikes. Espn.com 55 fastball, 60 curve ball, 50 change He gets downward movement on his 91-93 fastball, giving right-handed hitters fits and gets plenty of ground balls. His curveball is a potential swing-and-miss pitch in the mid 70's with good depth and spin, and he has good feel for the pitch as well. Right now Nola's change is just average, offering some fade but inconsistent arm speed hurts the deception on the pitch. Both credible sources with two very different write ups. Not only do they disagree on Nola's best secondary pitch but what his breaking ball is. One thing to be noted is I don't believe any of the grades have been changed since they were first written up. One example of why I say that is because here is a line from an article Law/Crawford did together last week: "Usually, pitchers who have arm-slot issues don't belong in a discussion of prospects with the highest floors, but Nola is a rare exception. He has two plus pitches in a 92-94 mph fastball and a change that has quality deception from arm speed, and he commands both of those offerings from his low three-quarter arm slot. "
  18. The Top 100 isn't done by just Callis but with Mayo/Pleskoff's input too so it shouldn't be surprising that there might be a few discrepancies. As you point out Callis suggests Nola could be a good number 3 while Mayo has suggested before that he could be a number 2. Interestingly enough once Hoffman went down Callis/Mayo both wrote articles on whom they think the Cubs should take at #4. Here is what Mayo wrote: "For me, I'd rather take the guy I feel certain will stay at a premium spot defensively. And that's Nick Gordon, now No. 6 on the Top 100. Sure, you could go the "safe" route with LSU ace Aaron Nola, but if I'm given this pick, I think I'd rather go with the higher upside." http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/jonathan-mayo-nick-gordon-fits-for-cubs-at-no-4-in-draft?ymd=20140513&content_id=75299890&vkey=news_mlb (Callis picked Jackson by the way)
  19. BA's new board: 1. Aiken 2. Kolek 3. Rodon 4. Jackson 5. Freeland 6. Hoffman 7. Gordon 8. Fedde 9. Finnegan 10. Nola Interesting board with Hoffman/Fedde still that high. Here is the link: http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft-preview/
  20. Callis answered a few questions about top prospects today. Here is a link: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/pipeline-inbox-whose-draft-stock-is-rising?ymd=20140522&content_id=76362818&vkey=news_mlb
  21. Average is 50, above average is 55, plus is 60-65, plus-plus is 70+. As for Nola, I'm just not a fan. If the Twins want a 6'1-6'2 pitcher give me Grant Holmes because of his raw stuff. Maybe I'm just a sucker for stuff or maybe it is because rarely is fastest to the bigs/safest ever turn out to be accurate. Wimmers, Gilmartin, and Hultzen (no I'm not comparing stuff but the label all of them were given) injuries/set backs have stopped all three from quick to the big arms. Brian Johnson was given the same label in 2012 and he might actually live up to it. I just don't like when part of a players value is link to quickness to the bigs.
  22. If we look only at competition a HS kid will never be able to compare to a college kid. Not just because of competition level but because of all the advantages that he gets from being in college. College kids have significantly better coaching staffs, have better equipment, better training facilities, and while they do play vs better competition they also have better players surrounding them. Outside of speed and level of competition I think Gordon has Turner beat in almost every other category. Gordon has a significantly better arm, has better bat speed, profiles as a plus defensive SS, and let's not forget his strong bloodline. Don't get me wrong, Turner is a solid prospect and great example of how deep this draft is, but I see Gordon has better prospect.
  23. I guess he likes the fact he is a true catcher. Pentecost has been killing the ball as of late and is a rare catcher who can steal bases.
  24. Miley McDaniel's new draft board: http://sbb.scout.com/story/1404313
  25. Two new draft articles from mlb.com are up. The first one is Mayo's take on how strong the college pitching group is after Hoffman/Fedde went down. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/despite-injuries-college-hurlers-in-mlb-draft-still-strong?ymd=20140520&content_id=76093814&vkey=news_mlb Yesterday Mayo posted an article where he had Toussaint and the third best prep arm behind Aiken/Kolek. Today Callis makes the case it should be Holmes. Here is his take: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/jim-callis-grant-holmes-is-third-best-high-school-pitcher-in-2014-mlb-draft?ymd=20140520&content_id=76095504&vkey=news_mlb
