After yet another Minnesota Twins loss, the Twins made a couple of roster moves on Thursday night. Tyler Duffey was optioned back to Rochester, and Eric Fryer was designated for assignment, clearing a spot on the 40-man roster. In their place the Twins recalled A.J. Achter and Chris Herrmann. The addition of Achter means the Twins have a nine-man bullpen, and only four starters. They'll next need a fifth starter on August 13th, so expect to see another move in the middle of next week. RED WINGS REPORT Rochester Red Wings @ Gwinnett Braves Box Score The Red Wings scored six of their seven runs in the fifth inning to erase a 4-0 deficit and take the lead for good. The Wings used a fairly balanced attack to get to the Braves, with five different hitters picking up multiple hits. The Red Wings had twelve hits on the night, to go along with six walks and just five strike outs. Reynaldo Rodriguez was 2-4 with a walk, a double, a run scored and three RBI. Oswaldo Arcia struggled big-time, he was 0-5 with three strike outs. Danny Ortiz was 2-5 with a solo home run. Red Wings starter Jason Wheeler was pulled after giving up four runs on seven hits in four innings. He didn't walk anyone and only struck out one of the 18 batters he faced. He was replaced by Alex Meyer who pitched three innings of relief and was credited with a win thanks to the Red Wings' six-run fifth. Meyer gave up three hits, a run, walked two and struck out one. Mark Hamburger and Aaron Thompson shared the eighth inning, and Michael Tonkin earned a save in the ninth, his ninth of the year. Final: Red Wings 7, Braves 5 LOOKOUTS LOOK-IN Chattanooga Lookouts @ Jackson Generals (Game 1) Box Score The Lookouts blasted four runs in the first inning but could not hold the lead as the red hot Generals rallied to come from behind. Kennys Vargas was 2-3 with two runs scored, four RBI, a walk, a two-run home run, and no strike outs. In the top of the seventh (remember that MiLB double-headers are scheduled for just seven innings), Max Kepler and manager Doug Mientkiewicz were both ejected for arguing after Kepler thought he was hit by a pitch and home plate umpire Clint Vondrak thought it was a foul ball. Greg Peavey started for the Lookouts, but after being staked to that early four-run lead, he gave up six runs in the second inning, and eight before he was lifted with one out in the fifth. Peavey's line for 4.1 innings was seven hits, eight runs (four earned) five walks, and two strike outs. He was replaced by Jake Reed who had an adventuresome two-thirds of an inning, giving up two hits and a walk, allowing a pair of runs to score. Reed picked up one of his outs as the Lookouts caught Jackson's Zach Shank attempting to steal home. Matt Summers came on the pitch the seventh and gave up a two-run home run before retiring the side. Final: Lookouts 6, Generals 10 Chattanooga Lookouts @ Jackson Generals (Game 2) Box Score The Lookouts managed just four hits in the second game of the evening, all singles. Jairo Rodriguez was 2-3 hitting in the eighth spot in the lineup, picking up half the team's hits. The 1-5 hitters for the Lookouts were a combined 2-14 with four walks and six strike outs. David Hurlbut pitched all six innings for Chattanooga. He gave up a pair of runs in each of the first two innings, but that was all he allowed the rest of the way. On the night he gave up six hits, four earned runs, walked three and struck out three. Final: Lookouts 0, Generals 4 MIRACLE MATTERS St. Lucie Mets @ Fort Myers Miracle Box Score The Miracle raced out to an early 4-1 lead and were cruising into the eighth inning up 5-1 before St. Lucie put up a pair of runs in the top of the eighth and again in the top of the ninth. Tied 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Logan Wade doubled to start the inning and was moved to third on a Zach Granite sacrifice bunt. Ryan Walker hit a liner to right field for a single to bring Wade around to score the winning run. Ryan Walker had himself a great ball-game, in addition to driving in the winning run he had two other hits, scored two runs and drew a walk. Mitch Garver also had a nice night, 2-4 with a walk and a pair of RBI. Kohl Stewart had a nice outing for the Miracle. He pitched seven innings, gave up six hits, one run, walked two and struck out six, bouncing back from his las outing in which he gave up seven runs in 5.1 innings. In his last 10 starts, Stewart is 3-3 with a 3.13 ERA over 60.1 innings, but he has just 36 strike outs and 24 walks. In five of those starts he's had as many or more walks than strike outs. After Stewart exited Thursday's game, Corey Williams and Todd Van Steensel tried to give the game away, each surrendering a pair of earned runs before Zach Jones came on with two outs in the ninth inning to shut the door on the St. Lucie attack. Final: Mets 5, Miracle 6 KERNELS KORNER Dayton Drags @ Cedar Rapids Kernels Box Score In a back and forth game in Cedar Rapids, the Kernels walked off the Dayton Dragons with a two-run ninth. Down 4-3, the Kernels put Rafael Valera on second after he singled and advanced on a fielding error by the center fielder. Valera moved to third on a ground ball and scored courtesy of a Zack Larson fielder's choice ground ball after the shortstop couldn't make an accurate throw to nab Valera at the plate. Larson, now standing on first base, stole second before batter Brett Doe walked. Another ground ball advanced both runners into scoring position, and with two outs and the game tied, Nick Gordon hits a pinch-hit line drive to left field to score Larson from third and win the game. On the evening, the Kernels picked up twelve hits, four for extra bases, five walks, and struck out eight times. T.J. White was 2-4 with a pair of doubles, a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Brian Navarreto and Tanner English also had multiple hits, both 2-4 in the contest. Zach Tillery gave up nine hits over six innings, but just three runs, one walk and six strike outs, good enough to earn him a quality start, but no decision. Michael Theofanopoulos pitched three strong innings of relief to earn the win for the Kernals thanks to those late inning heroics. He gave up four hits, one earned run, walked one and struck out three. Final: Dragons 4, Kernels 5 E-TWINS E-NOTES Elizabethton Twins @ Johnson City Cardinals Box Score In the longest game in the Twins system last night, the Elizabethton Twins defeated the Johnson City Cardinals 4-2 in twelve innings. Clay gave up just five hits, walked none and struck out eight. He was replaced by C.K. Irby who pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless ball before being replaced by Kuo Hua Lo who pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless ball and earned a win thinks to that Wade home run. David Price and the Blue Jays carved up the Twins on Monday afternoon and to make matters worse every affiliate in action on Monday night lost. All of the games were close, with only the Red Wings losing by more than one run, but outside of Elizabethton, there was not a lot of run scoring. Let's get to it.RED WINGS REPORT Rochester Red Wings @ Gwinnett Braves Box Score The Red Wings struck first, a solo home run in the second inning off the bat of Xavier Avery, to put the Rochester up 1-0. Unfortunately, Rochester had just four other hits the rest of the way. James Beresford, Danny Ortiz, Argenis Diaz and Chris Herrmann had the rest of the hits. Danny Ortiz was the only Red Wings player other than Avery to have an extra-base hit, a double. Danny Santana and Oswaldo Arcia were both 0-4, but neither dude struck out. What are the odds?! Jose Berrios pitched seven innings of three-run baseball. He gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out four. Unfortunately he also gave up a pair of long balls, a solo shot in the fourth and a two-run dinger in the sixth, both with two outs. Berrios was replaced by A.J. Achter, who pitched a 1-2-3 eighth, including a strike out. Final: Red Wings 1, Braves 3 LOOKOUTS LOOK-IN Chattanooga Lookouts @ Jackson Generals Box Score The Lookouts had OWNED the Generals this year, holding a 10-1 record against Jackson going into the Monday evening contest. It seemed like the Lookouts would bring that winning attitude again on Monday night, scoring a run in the top of the first on a Jorge Polanco solo home run, but that was the last run the Lookouts scored on Monday, and they recorded just five hits on the evening. No Lookout hitter had multiple hits, though both D.J. Hicks and Stephen Wickens reached safely twice, both 1-3 with a walk. Kennys Vargas was 0-4 with three strikeouts. The big fella is hitting just .232 at AA, but he's still walking a fair amount so his OBP is still north of .350. He has 28 strikeouts in 28 games, which doesn't seem like nearly enough, but he did have a nice stretch of games in the middle of July where he went four games in a row without any whiffs. On the mound the Lookouts received a nice performance from D.J. Baxendale (pictured above) who was saddled with a tough luck loss to fall to 4-3. Baxendale pitched seven innings and gave up just four hits and two runs. He walked one and struck out two. He threw just 85 pitches and set down the side in order in the seventh, but was not given a chance to pitch any deeper into the game. J.T. Chargois pitched a clean eighth inning in relief, recording three straight ground balls. Final: Lookouts 1, Generals 2 MIRACLE MATTERS SCHEDULED OFF DAY KERNELS KORNER SCHEDULED OFF DAY E-TWINS E-NOTES Elizabethton Twins @ Johnson City Cardinals Box Score Down 9-3 in the top of the eighth inning, the E-Town Twins put up a five spot to crawl within one run, but could not score the tying run in the ninth and fell to 19-21 on the season. Leadoff hitter Jermain Palacios was 2-5 with a pair of doubles and a pair of RBIs and still could not claim to have had the best night for the Twins. That honor goes to cleanup hitter Chris Paul, who was 2-5 with a double, a home run (of the two-run variety) and FOUR RBIs. A.J. Murray (2-5), and Brad Hartong (2-4) also had multi-hit nights for the Twins. Twins starter Miles Nordgren gave up three runs on eight hits over five innings before giving way to Nate Gercken. Gercken gave up six runs, all earned, in two innings, including a pair of Cardinals home runs. Kuo Hua Lo pitched the eighth, facing the minimum and picking up a strikeout to boot. In front of the home crowd at AT&T Field in Chattanooga, Baxendale threw seven innings of two-hit, one-run baseball. Baxendale walked five and struck out three. The lone run he gave up came in the top of the first after he had given up a lead-off walk to start the game. Unfortunately for Baxendale, Jake Reed showed up in the eighth inning and things went haywire. Reed gave up three runs on four hits and a walk before getting out of the inning. After the damage was done in the eighth, the Lookouts turned to another D.J., this time D.J. Johnson, in the ninth to finish the game. Johnson faced the minimum and struck out two. After Baxendale gave up the run in the first the Lookouts came right back and evened the score on a Max Kepler single that scored Levi Michael who had doubled at the start of the game for the Lookouts. After those two hits in the first, the Lookouts had eight more, but stranded ten men and could not take advantage of their opportunities. Levi Michael was 2-5, including that leadoff double. Travis Harrison was 2-4 with a double of his own. Kennys Vargas was 0-4 with four strike- outs and now has eleven strikeouts in his last four games to go along with just two hits. Final: Smokies 4, Lookouts 1 MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers @ Tampa Yankees Box Score Jason Kanzler hit his seventh home run of the year in the seventh inning as the Fort Myers Miracle defeated the Tampa Yankees 7-5. Kanzler was 1-4 on the evening. Ryan Walker was 2-4 with a walk and an RBI, and Mitch Garver was 2-5 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Logan Wade also had a pair of hits, an RBI and a run scored. Mat Batts came into Thursday's game with a 1.66 ERA and after he gave up three earned runs in just over five innings (5.1), he left with his ERA a third of a run higher at 1.96. Batts struck out six and walked just two, but he gave up six hits (five singles and a double). Batts was replaced by Nick Burdi who threw a wild pitch, allowing a run to score to even the game at 3-3. The wild pitch earned Burdi a blown save, but the Miracle went out and put up a four spot in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh Burdi picked up a pair of strike outs, threw another wild pitch, and escaped a two-on, two-out jam by inducing a ground ball to second. Todd Van Steensel pitched the eighth and ninth, giving up a run on three hits. He also struck out two. Final: Miracle 7, Yankees 4 KERNELS KORNER Wisconsin Timber Rattlers @ Cedar Rapids Box Score Kernels' starter Zach Tillery faced twenty batters but didn't make it out of the fourth inning, lifted after just 3.2 innings. He gave up nine hits and five runs, all earned. He struck out one batter and did not walk anyone. Michael Theofanopoulos, owner of the longest name in the history of the world, earned a victory with 3.1 scoreless innings in relief. He walked two and struck out four. Jared Wilson earned his first save of the year, the two inning variety, with a pair of scoreless innings on an 80 degree night in Cedar Rapids. Brian Navarreto led the Kernels with three hits on a 3-4 night that included a double and a strikeout. Navarreto had the misfortune of hitting at the bottom of the lineup, so despite an extra base hit and a pair of singles, he did not have an RBI or a run scored. Nick Gordon was 2-3 with a double, two walks, an RBI and a run scored. Tanner English hit his fifth home run of the year, his only hit on the night. Final: Timber Rattlers 5, Kernels 6 E-TWINS E-NOTES Princeton Rays @ Elizabethton Box Score Trailing 1-0 headed to the bottom of the ninth inning, with just three hits so far in the game, the E-Town Twins rallied for a pair of runs for a walk-off victory. Down to their last out with no one on base, the Twins' Travis Blankenhorn walked and was replaced by a pinch runner, Manuel Guzman. Pinch hitter Amaurys Minier then doubled home Guzman to even the score at one. After a pitching change, Ariel Montesino singled on a ground ball to right. With two outs Minier was running on contact and came home to score the winning run! Those ninth inning theatrics occurred after a strong pitching performance from the Twins' starter Andro Cutura who went six innings, gave up four hits, walked three and struck out three. He was replaced by C.K. Irby who pitched two innings, giving up a run on three hits, but all six outs he recorded were via strikeout. He will turn 23 in early August, nearly two years older than the average GCL player. Stephen Pryor came in and gave up an unearned run on two hits and a walk in 1.2 innings. He struck out four. He has now pitched 9.2 innings over seven rehab appearances in the GCL. One would think he needs to be assigned to a full-season affiliate soon. Max Cordy struck out two in a perfect inning. One final day off for the Minnesota Twins before they are back in action to begin the second half of the season. With no major league baseball, the minor leagues take center stage.RED WINGS REPORT Lehigh Valley IronPigs vs. Rochester Red Wings Box Score Thanks to nine shutout innings from the Red Wings pitching staff, Rochester dealt Lehigh Valley's Aaron Nola his first AAA loss of the season. The Red Wings rode another strong Tyler Duffey (4-4) start to victory. Duffey went six innings, giving up just two hits. He walked five but struck out six. His ERA now sits at a sparkly 2.24. The Red Wings scored six runs despite striking out ten times and picking up only eight hits. Oswaldo Arcia hit his ninth AAA homer, a two-run shot in the first inning, and Danny Ortiz hit his ninth as well, a solo shot in the fourth. Ortiz's homer was part of a 3-4 night that also include a double and a pair of RBIs. Arcia's home run was part of his 1-4 night that also included three strike outs. Final: IronPigs 0, Red Wings 6 LOOKOUTS LOOK-IN Chattanooga Lookouts vs. Biloki Shuckers Box Score The Lookouts managed just four hits and three walks to go along with ten strikeouts of their own in a 3-0 shutout in Biloxi, Mississippi. Shannon Wilkerson, Niko Goodrum, and Max Kepler, batting first, second, and third, respectively, each had a hit. Jairo Rodriguez had the other hit on the evening for the Lookouts. Brett Lee was tagged with the loss for Chattanooga, dropping to 0-4 on the year. Lee gave up just two hits, but issued five free passes and was victimized by a pair of unearned runs. No other Miracle hitter had multiple hits, though Brett Doe was 1-2 with a pair of walks. Ryan Eades, who had put up a number of nice starts in the last two months, was tagged for four runs in 6.1 innings. He did, however, strike out seven and he didn't walk anyone. Final: Bees 5, Kernels 4 E-TWINS E-NOTES Elizabethton Twins vs. Danville Braves Box Score The E-Twins only struck out eight times, so I suppose that's pretty good news, but they still couldn't muster any offense, scoring just a single run. LaMonte Wade was 2-5 with an RBI and A.J. Murray was 2-4 with a double. The Twins used four pitchers to get through eight innings even after they got six innings from their starter Miles Nordgren. Nordgren was tagged for one unearned run on five hits, no walks and five strike outs. He was replaced in the seventh by Alex Robinson who gave up an earned run of his own, which saddled him with the loss. Lee was lifted after the fourth inning. Time Shibuya thre three scoreless innings or relief, and Matt Summers pitched the eighth. Final: Lookouts 0, Shuckers 3 MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers Miracle vs. Brevard County Manatees Box Score When the leadoff hitter is 2-3 with a walk, you hope the top of your order can produce a couple of runs, but the Miracle could only push Zach Granite across one time for their lone run of the evening. No other Miracle hitter had multiple hits, though Brett Doe was 1-2 with a pair of walks. Ryan Eades, who had put up a number of nice starts in the last two months, was tagged for four runs in six and a third innings. He did, however, strike out seven, and he didn't walk anyone. He was lifted for Brian Gilbert who pitched the final inning and a third, giving up one hit, one walk, and he struck out a pair. Final: Miracle 1, Manatees 4 KERNELS KORNER Burlington Bees vs. Cedar Rapids Kernels Box Score Down 5-2 headed to the bottom of the seventh, the Kernels scored a run in bottom of the inning and then another in the ninth but came up just short, losing 5-4 in front of the home crowd in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Kernels offense put together just seven hits, and like the Red Wings and the Lookouts, they also stuck out ten times. Brian Navarreto led the charge for the Kernels, their only hitter was multiple hits, 2-4 with an RBI single. Ethan Mildren was lifted after just four innings, giving up seven hits, three earned runs, two walks and a single strike out. Jared Wilson pitched three innings but gave up two more runs. Chris Mazza and Cameron Booser each pitched a scoreless inning of relief, but the game was too far out of hand for the Kernels to come back. Nordgren was tagged for one unearned run on five hits, no walks, and five strike outs. He was replaced in the seventh my Alex Robinson who gave up an earned run of his own, which saddled him with the loss. Josh Guyer pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up the Twins' only earned run of the evening, and Onesimo Hernandez finished the eighth, putting down the only batter he faced. Mike Pelfrey did not pitch great for the Twins on Thursday night and was a victim of his own efficiency as a low pitch count had him in the game into the eighth inning, despite a well-rested Twins bullpen after a midweek sweep of the Royals. Pelfrey ran into trouble in the eighth and the Tigers scored a pair of runs and the Twins failed to respond. The Twins are now just 2-8 against Detroit this year.RED WINGS REPORT Buffalo Bisons @ Rochester Red Wings Box Score Nearly 4,000 fans at Rochester's Frontier Field watched an exciting back and forth game featuring one of the Twins' best minor league starters of the year (Tyler Duffey), and a strong bullpen performance from three relievers who have all logged innings with the Twins in 2015. Duffey started and went 6.2 innings. He walked one, struck out four, and gave up three runs (two earned). Tyler Duffey was tagged for six hits, including a home run from the Bisons number nine hitter, Jonathan Diaz. Duffey exited with the game tied, and Aaron Thompson picked up his first AAA win of the year pitching just two-thirds of an inning. He walked one and struck out one. Alex Meyer came out next, pitching 0.2 of an inning. He gave up a hit. A.J. Achter closed the game, picking up his fourteenth save of the season. The Lookouts had plenty of base runners; they tallied ten hits and six walks as a team, but left ten runners on base, despite going 4-10 with runners in scoring position. Five of the Miracle hits came from Ryan Walker (2-4) and Tanner Vavra (3-4 with a triple) near the back of the lineup. Mitch Garver (1-3) and Logan Wade (0-3) each had an RBI. Garver's RBI double was the game winner, scoring Jason Kanzler all the way from first base. Final: Miracle 2, Hammerheads 1 KERNELS KORNER Cedar Rapids Kernels @ Beloit Snappers Box Score Ethan Mildren pitched well enough to pick up a win, but the Kernels bats didn't come alive until late in the game, giving the win to Randy LeBlanc. Miguel Sano made his MLB debut on Thursday evening and (of course) picked up his first career hit via an infield single in the top of the ninth inning at Kauffman stadium in Kansas City. He's a huge young man, just starting his (hopefully) huge MLB career. Oh, and the Twins won thanks to a spectacular eight-inning shutout from Kyle Gibson capped by a Glen Perkins save.RED WINGS REPORT Red Wings vs. Lehigh Valley IronPigs Box Score Rochester and Lehigh Valley were scoreless through four and a half innings before the IronPigs broke through and scored a pair of runs on the Red Wings starter, Greg Peavey. The Red Wings were down 6-0 before they scored a run of their own in the top of the seventh, and then gave that run right back in the bottom of the inning. Twins Minor League Report (7/2): Miguel Sano Debuts
Eric R Pleiss posted a blog entry in Beyond the Metrodome
Miguel Sano made his MLB debut on Thursday evening and (of course) picked up his first career hit via an infield single in the top of the ninth inning at Kauffman stadium in Kansas City. He's a huge young man, just starting his (hopefully) huge MLB career. Oh, and the Twins won thanks to a spectacular eight-inning shutout from Kyle Gibson capped by a Glen Perkins save. RED WINGS REPORT Red Wings vs. Lehigh Valley IronPigs Box Score Rochester and Lehigh Valley were scoreless through four and a half innings before the IronPigs broke through and scored a pair of runs on the Red Wings started, Greg Peavey. Peavey dropped to 0-2 and was charged with the loss. He pitched five innings, struck out five, walked two, and gave up a pair of earned runs. He was replaced by Caleb Thielbar who couldn't hold things together and gave up four earned runs in the sixth on three hits and three walks. Cole Johnson pitched a pair of innings to finish the game, giving up an earned run, striking out one and walking one. The Red Wings were down 6-0 before they scored a run of their own in the top of the seventh, and then gave that run right back in the bottom of the inning. Leading off for Rochester, Aaron Hicks was 3-4 with a walk and an RBI. He should be ready to be back in Minnesota at any time. Oswaldo Arcia was 2-5 with a double. and he's hitting .261, but he had three more strike outs on Thursday. No other Red Wings hitter had more than one hit, and no one else had an extra base hit. Final: Red Wings 1, IronPigs 7 LOOKOUTS LOOK-IN POSTPONED MIRACLE MATTERS Miracle vs. Palm Beach Cardinals Box Score Chih-Wei Hu gave up just a single run (earned) in five innings but was tagged with the loss as the Miracle hitters were shut out. And Dallas Gallant pitched the eighth to finish the game, recording a strike out and giving up zero hits or walks. The Miracle gave up only four hits, and they only tallied four hits of their own. Engelb Vielma and Aderlin Mejia both had doubles, but no Fort Myers hitter had multiple hits and the Miracle never had back-to-back hits on Thursday night. Alex Swim and Marcus Knecht each had a single. The Miracle hitters did not have any walks, and combined for four strike outs. The Twins walked-off the St. Louis Cardinals to split a four-game home-and-home series with the NL Central leaders. Big things happened in the Minnesota Twins farm system as well. Max Kepler is white hot right now, and his team reached a milestone in Chattanooga. Today's Twins Minor League Report.RED WINGS REPORT Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders @ Rochester Box Score Scranton (home of one of the world's finest paper companies) scored seven runs (ONLY ONE EARNED), all charged to Red Wings starter Jason Wheeler in the third inning of Thursday night's game in front of 4,431 fans at Frontie Field in Rochester, NY. Wheeler took the loss and dropped to 1-7 on the season, surviving for just 2.2 innings before being lifted for Alex Meyer. Meyer went four innings out of the pen, struck out two, gave up four hits, and was charged with two unearned runs. Logan Darnell came into the seventh, finished up the frame for Meyer, plus the eighth inning. Darnell was charged with one unearned run on a hit, a walk and two strike outs. Mark Hamburger pitched a third of an inning, and Ryan O'Rourke finished the ninth and closed the door on a game that saw the Red Wings give up NINE unearned runs. Danny Santana was just 1-5 from the leadoff spot, but his lone hit was a triple. Reynaldo Rodriguez provided most of the Red Wings offense. He was 3-3 with a run scored, a double, a home run and FIVE RBIs. Eric Fryer also had three hits on a 3-4 night with two runs scored and a walk. Final: RailRiders 10, Red Wings 7 LOOKOUTS LOOK-IN Jacksonville Suns @ Chattanooga Box Score Pitching in front of 2,534 friendly faces at AT&T Field in Chattanooga, TN, David Hurlbut earned his third win of the year with seven innings of five-hit baseball. He gave up three runs (two earned) walked one, struck out four, and gave up a home run. Zach Jones pitched an ugly eighth, giving up a pair of runs, and just to make things little more interesting, J.T. Chargois gave up a run in the ninth (and earned himself a save). Despite a poor outing form the bullpen the Lookouts held on to win thanks to eight early runs, clinching the Southern League first half title. Max Kepler went 3-4 with two runs scored and a pair of triples. The young German is now hitting .341 on the year and could be in line for a promotion to Triple-A Rochester. Adam Brett Walker was the only other Lookouts hitter with multiple hits, going 2-3 with a run scored and a pair of RBIs, with a home run and a walk. The win clinched a spot for the Lookouts in the Southern League Playoffs. *With three hits on Thursday (following four-hit games on Tuesday and Wednesday), Max Kepler is now 11-14 in his last three games, and 16-25 (.640) in his last seven games. Final Score: Suns 6, Lookouts 8 MIRACLE MATTERS Daytona Tortugas @ Fort Myers Box Score AAaron Slegers pitched six scoreless innings to the delight of the 2,941 fans at CenturyLink Sports Complex in Fort Myers, FL. Slegers struck out five, walked two, and gave up just two hits to earn a win and even his record at 4-4. D.J. Johnson pitched a pair of scoreless innings and Alex Muren pitched a rocky ninth, giving up a run. The Miracle held on for the win. The Miracle were 3-9 with runners in scoring position and knocked off the Dayton Tortugas thanks to some timely hitting from Marcus Knecht. Knecht was 3-3 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk. What a night! The cause was aided by a 2-4 night at the plate from Mitch Garver, who also had an RBI. Final score: Tortugas 1, Miracle 4 KERNELS KORNER Burlington Bees @ Cedar Rapids Box Score Keaton Steele pitched nine scoreless innings for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in front of a home crowd of 4,173 fans at Perfect Game Field and still didn't factor into the decision as the Kernels ultimately fell in eleven innings. Steele gave up just six hits, struck out seven and walked nobody. Michael Theofanopoulos pitched a scoreless tenth but ran into trouble in the eleventh, giving up a couple of runs thanks to an error and a wild pitch. When you don't score any runs in an eleven inning game, there isn't a lot to talk about for the guys with the bats. The Kernels managed just five hits off of five different Bees pitchers. Nick Gordon had a pair of singles and was the only Kernels hitter with multiple hits. The other three hits came from Tanner English (1-5), Max Murphy (1-3) and Pat Kelly (1-4).
