  1. I'm trying to remember, has Gardenhire been thrown out at all this year? The last couple of years it seemed like he was getting tossed once every couple of weeks or so.
  2. Are you saying that it's the Twins fault that Blackburn pitched so poorly?
  3. Correct in all. Any player with five years service can refuse a minor league assignment, option or outright (except for rehab assignments).
  4. I'd guess either of those reasons is behind it. Generally, if a player doesn't have enough seniority to decline a minor league assignment (which neither Nishi or Blackburn do), teams will go ahead and use them as AAA roster filler. You may as well get SOME value out of that sunk cost, and if nothing else they can buy when the team goes out to dinner. The Twins are generally good about granting a guy his release if he could get a shot with another team, but I'm reasonably certain neither of these guys are getting major league offers anytime soon. The fact they have been outrighted means they must have cleared waivers, so you're probably right.
  5. So what happens with them next? The lead entry in the thread says they are being outrighted. I guess my only question is why are we even keeping them in the organization instead of releasing them? Is it just salary reasons - we're paying them so maybe the Triple-A club can use them? Are they being held in reserve in case the sky falls and they are needed in the future?
  6. Walters has to be close - he threw 59 pitches in his last rehab start on Sunday.
  7. Because Willingham's numbers are inflated by a fantastic start, and Mauer's are deflated by a terrible start. Look at their stats over the past two weeks - Willingham has an OPS about .690 and OBP of .277. Managers and pitchers know who's hot and who's slumping. Given their recent performance, I'd rather pitch to Willingham than Mauer. That's exactly what Seattle did, and it worked for them.
  8. Walters has been getting about 3 innings per outing, as was the case Sunday night. Must be on a pitch count. I believe you are correct, but he did throw 59 pitches in that outing Sunday. Given the options (and I know it won't be Wednesday due to timing) maybe we should activate him sooner rather than later. If he can only go five innings and throw 80 pitches or so, is that any worse than running Blackie out again?
  9. So if Blackburn is sent back to Rochester (nice payback to them for reupping the PDC:)) who pitches Wednesday? Is Walters ready to go?
  10. Well, at least Gray has lowered my blood pressure - I could care less about the game anymore.
  11. Right now Gray is the least of our problems - we need those bats to wake up, SOON, or this is gonna be a long road trip.
  12. OK, rook, let's see what you can do.
  13. If Deduno keeps pitching like this I'm going to have to bump up my hypertension medicine!
  14. Dick Bremer just announced that when the Twins get back from the road trip, Bert Blyleven will back back in the booth for the rest of the season. Be still my beating heart!
  15. With the bases loaded and no outs, getting two outs is a godsend. Its better to concede the run and be one out away from getting out of the inning than hope for one out and still have the bases loaded with one out. The odds are still there for a big inning, at least compared to one already in the bank and a runner on third with two outs. Anything but a double play is probably going to score that run anyway. Take away the run that was walked in and with the decision to go for two they just held them to one run in a bases loaded, no out situation. You can't ask for more than that. Thanks! I've watched the game for years but I never played it, and I'm just now picking up some of the finer points of game strategy.
  16. OK, help my ignorance here. Is there a reason he didn't go for the force at home?
  17. I'm calling triple play. Deduno has luck on his side. Guess the dice didn't come up right.
  18. I'm not sure what that means. For my generation a "gamer" is somebody who plays AD&D.
  19. I know what you are saying, but you have to admit when you take the statement out of context of his entire career it turns into a sad commentary on the Twins history in signing free agents.
  20. I'm guessing a part of that is that they don't really need more outfielders right now (I'm assuming Span comes back to finish the season), especially now that you've called up and given a 40-man slot to Carson. Aside from the two outfielders (Arcia, Benson), all the other players on the 40-man are in Rochester, so it makes sense they'll get the call-ups first, as they are infielders (which are more in need) and pitchers.
  21. I can second that - the only bright side of that play was at least he beat the relay to avoid the DP, so they got one. But that also felt like a lost opportunity.
  22. If I remember correctly, you can backdate the DL for up to 10 days, so not putting him on the DL has not affected when he could return yet. The cost, if you call it that, is having an injured player on the bench and a roster spot that is basically wasted. At this point in the season, does that really matter? Being in the AL that's less of an issue than a NL club, and it would seem somewhat pointless to aggressively use the DL list and maximize the roster just so we can slide past Kansas City into 4th place. And there is the question of who you bring up. Unless you want to try and clear a space on the 40-man, that leaves you with Arcia and Benson. New Britain should keep Arcia as they are in a run for the playoffs (and the Twins aren't - otherwise I would say take him up now), and Benson won't help you much anyway.
  23. Is that an option next year? Or will he have enough major league service time (5 years) to be able to veto such a move? They could do it this year because he was at 4+ years.
  24. At this point, you also have to consider how his continued struggles affect the rest of the team. If you just keep trotting him out there every fifth day, are you just basically telling the team that you are giving away every fifth day as a loss? Is his continued presence in the rotation affecting morale? I can imagine that, even trying to keep a professional attitude, and even if you like the guy personally and he's an asset in the clubhouse, it's bound to get old knowing that every fifth day is thrown away before it even starts. There's been some talk on other threads about whether or not the Twins have given up. I'm not willing to say that, but keeping Blackburn in the rotation can't be helping that. I think you have to take a serious look on whether he should just be released, if not now than during the off-season. Yes, you take a hit on the salary, but that's a sunk cost - it can't be recovered. At some point you have to just write that off and do what you can to put a better product on the field. Even somebody with a consistent 5.00 ERA would be an improvement - there's gotta be one of those out there for only a million or two for next year.
  25. As I said on the game thread, I'm not enough of an expert to know whether Mauer handled the at-bat properly or not. I'm just responding as an average, uninformed fan, and to me it felt like "kissing your sister." I understand that Mauer needs to play the game in the way he does it best - which for him means talking walks when offered - and that he has to stick to what has made him as successful as he is. I understand that, over the long term, that will create more success for the team than trying to overhaul his approach on a situation-by-situation basis. I understand that Willingham has a decent OBP, even if he has been slumping lately. If Willingham comes through, the whole discussion is moot, but he didn't. None of this changes the fact that my emotional reaction to the Mauer at-bat was indifferent. It felt like a tie to me, a bit of a letdown, whatever statistics you use, and left a slightly sour taste in my mouth.
