  1. Has anyone noticed if Ol' Gibson has been reading The Know-it-All: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World by A.J. Jacobs - Reviews, Discussion, Bookclubs, Lists ? Yeah, that's going to happen. I'm with the Twins FO and Leviathan, here (shocking, I know). Geez people, this isn't rocket science, and a Strasburg/Nats scenario just isn't going to happen this year, Mr. Mackey. Given that the Twins have already made a statement of puntage for 2013, the Twins can experiment with Gibson via a short-innings starting schedule, a 6-man rotation, a 3x3 inning matrix every 5th game, delayed call-up, extended spring training, etc.
  2. Wow, hard to please everybody. 2012 was most certainly a break-out year for Hicks, finally beginning to realize his full potential and holding much promise for years to come. And better yet, his breakout really kicked in when he was moved to leadoff full-time. He is on a much higher career flight path than Michael Bourn, even though he started out his professional career 2 years younger than Bourn did (Bourn minor league stats: .284/.378/.392/.770 Hicks: .271/.379/.421/.800 with similar defensive-range stats). If the biggest concern that we have with Hicks is questioning his switch-hitting ability, we're going to get a good one, one to at least remind of the days of Puckett and Hunter, if not very conceivably surpass them.
  3. 1) I concur with the panic part. Does anyone have any backstory on who the Twins were competing with to up the ante and sign Correia for the extra year? I think the Baker signing blind-sided them, and having targeted Correia for a late-signing prospect, they radically moved up the timetable. 2) I like your theory, Pavano might have been that mentor guy in year's past- it still would have made a lot of sense to get both Lannan and Saunders- if they wanted 2 guys who would have led by example- nothing flashy of course- but Saunders has averaged 32 Starts and 196 IP per year over the last 5 years and Lannan has also averaged 32 Starts (including minor league stats) and 188 IP per year over the same time frame. And it wouldn't have cost much to land both of them, even giving Saunders a 2-year deal.
  4. JR Towles, who has a AAA career .770 OPS, was brought in last year to provide a little Spring Training competition amongst the back-end catchers, and ultimately providing depth at AAA. Obviously, it didn't work out as well as the Twins FO had hoped, but at least they tried to make a move last year to make the team better in this area. If you read the thread, I pointed out that having a catcher that might potentially provide more than Butera's lifetime OPS of .497, just might make the Twins more amenable to moving Doumit if a favorable trade opportunity came along. Hermann appears to need a year at AAA and it costs virtually nothing to bring in a Towles or Martinez-type and see if they can catch lightning in a bottle over the interim, and if by some chance it works out, you potentially get a guy 2 years younger than Butera, who has a fighting chance of being better than Butera.
  5. That and a high OBP, I guess those reports from Seth about resembling Revere need some revision...
  6. I'm not sure how happy a clam can get, but I know that if they'd bothered to addressing both of those areas- with Marcum and a real major league Shortstop- my Twins happy meter would have gone off the hook.
  7. Unless there's a can't miss MI that I am unaware of, they better not get complacent about drafting upside arms. There are at least 3 guys in the draft who could be pitching with the big club as soon as 2014, or 2015 at the latest. I think Twins fans should be excited if 3 of the 6 guys mentioned above pan out as top- or middle-end SPs and positively giddy if 1 or more others become serviceable on the back-end. Hopefully, they don't feel like they can check off their SP "to-do" list if the "Big 3" start to accelerate their development in 2013; they shouldn't stop for one second in their quest at shooting for a legitimate ace in their favorable draft positions both in 2013 and (quite likely) 2014, provided that it's a fairly clear choice over a position player.
  8. This "depressing" quote was widely known and teeth-clenchingly accepted by Twins fans: But this I had forgotten about, and is laughingstock-worthy: After erroneously downplaying Parmelee's potential upside, and then "shuddering" about an OF now devoid of one proven outfielder- leading to utter pitching disaster, Schoenfeld throws Twins fans a "lifeline bone" of positivity: Remember 2012? Good times....
  9. Schoenfeld assigned the letter grade of "D" for the Twins offseason activity- when so much more could have been done with just the hint of an organizational pulse showing signs of life- this is simply unacceptable. In point of fact, you generally cannot transfer a "D" grade on a course for credit when transferring to another university- so it in reality represents a FAIL on the part of an organization so recently injected with a beautiful, revenue-stream paying ball-park, and a club still replete with 2 former MVPs still near the prime of their careers.
  10. The Rays are a team legitimately working on a shoe string budget, and still have Zobrist, Rodriguez and Roberts and replaced Brignac (-0.3 WAR) and Johnson (0.3 WAR) = 0.0 WAR with Escobar (1.8 WAR) and Johnson (0.7 WAR) =2.5 WAR. That's more than a "maybe", closer to "major", perhaps "significant" will suffice?
  11. This somewhat accurately sums up what many of us are saying (between breaths), plus I will add that pretending to "fire" members of the coaching staff, retaining marginal-to-no-talent players year-after-year, and offering Butera anything other than a minor league contract seemed a blatant disregard of the fans.
  12. This reads curiously like the club didn't try very hard...or didn't care much to upgrade the obvious areas of deficiency. And a $60M payroll team like the Rays put together a major depth upgrade as SS and 2B for peanuts.
  13. I've been proposing for years that the Twins raid the Rays front office. Matt Arnold would run rings around anyone in the Twins FO, starting with Rob Antony- down to the mystery "stat guy" in the catacombs that TR supposedly runs the numbers by.
  14. I was with you until I reached the boldface type... I've been for "rebuild" or "compete now" for quite some time, the Twins are playing a middle ground that has virtually never played out well... and they are demonstrating in real time why it doesn't/
  15. Of course, yet another complete mistatement of facts.
  16. Congratulations on remaining in continual and constant violation of Twins Dailly decorum and policy, which is icing on the cake and in addition to your constant mistatement of facts and continual inane, site debasing and frequently profane attack and rants that add nothing to the discussion. Well played, sir.
  17. Sounds like you might be hard of hearing.
  18. Yeah, but then, collectively as this generation of fans, we couldn't have been educated and lectured to on the extreme value of "forbearance". What a load of excrement, as Souhan hits another new low.
  19. The fact that these two were in his opening statement seems more like a crutch and an impediment- my translation, they're already banking on the new version of the M & M boys (Meyer and May) who are going to be the designees to bail out this franchise, it's going to take a long time to get competitive again, Morneau's on the block to gain the team even more "flexibility", more years ahead for the rebuild....
  20. And the Rays, who still were able to shore up their MI from outside the orgaization very cheaply this offseason and traded well from their own position of strength. All this for their current projected 2013 payroll of around $60M (so when the Twins hit that mark next year, they'll be competitive again, right?)
  21. And someone else, who claims to be wise, must be proud of his content-free snark. Thanks for continuing to advance the discussion.
  22. And how are you certain of this? Give me examples of guys like Butera, who averaged .582 OPS in 2 years of AAA and then raised their average by .218 points going to the PCL and I will get on board the PCL effect being a valid comparison here. Again, you over-simplified my analysis, I would like for the Twins to consider all options for upgrade, of which Mauer (eventual positon change), Doumit and Butera are parts of the same puzzle. I certainly don't know if Martinez is the pony in the pile, but it costs virtually nothing to find out. If Herrmann had torn the cover off the ball in September, we might all be looking at this differently. Giving Butera yet another scholarship (with a raise) and deciding to carry on their 40-man roster one catcher entering his 7th minor league year with the club and another catcher entering his 5th year as a minor leaguer- both of whom have not yet reached AAA- is a tad disappointing.
  23. And yet another "hear no evil, see no evil" shrink offering "sincere" medical advice without a license heard from. In the meantime, Rome continues to burn... PS I'm struggling to find out what's "hateful" in noticing and identifying the overwhelming forces of inertia that surrounds this team and its obligatory BS-swallowing fanboys.
  24. Which could have been looked up and confirmed by anyone, I thought it was apparent, especially to Twins fans, that Doumit was a very productive DH in 2012, with additional value to a team that wanted a position player.
  25. I am in 100% agreeent with your statement. But, since the Twins insist on the 3 catcher alignment, and the best argument for Butera appears to be that "he isn't going to play that much, anyway", I thought why not take a free shot at a guy who might actually provide some pop off the bench to attempt to raise their bench OPS above .600 and a more legit bat to free up the Twins in pulling the trigger on an in-season move on Doumit. This was the underlying thinking to the hypothesis that the Twins are in full "wait-and-see what we got" mode, instead of "trying" or "caring" to get better by having more than just Plan A in their handbook.
