I don't see any way that Percy reports to camp next year if they don't move him. That turns it into a media circus and increases the chances of him having a off year. I agree that Alex Smith will be cut after the year. I am not so sure about Matt Flynn. Those are the only 2 QBs that will be available that I think would warrant a look in the offseason(including the draft) I doubt you could get anything in the first round for him unless it was move up a couple spots and give Percy and our first. May be able to move him and move down a few spots and add a second rounder.

I think you guys are still talking about the art of running the football, in which cas I would rank Sanders at the top but there is no way I would hand him the ball on 4th and 1 from the 50 with the Super Bowl on the line. ps you can look it up, he has the most carries for loss in the history of the NFL along with his nearly 5 yd average. -

OJ got his 2000 yards in a 14 game season. Jim Brown is still the only runner to average over 100 yards per game for a career. IF Peterson is blessed with another 5 years he will be in the conversation as the best ever. -

I loved to watch Barry and OJ run but I would never hand off to them on 4th and 1 with the Super Bowl on the line. 4th and 35 maybe. -

Trouble is there are 2 arguments that aren't related. There is the position of RB as a whole(which is what the title of this thread( There is the art of running the ball. I am old enough to have watched OJ Simpson play. With that if we are talking about the title of this thread, what RB would you want to be on the field if your team had a 4th and 1 from the fifty yard line with 45 seconds left in the Super Bowl and 2 timeouts and was trailing. Should be a running play, but if you are going to pass you want a guy who can pick up a blitzer, or maybe catch a swing pass. Remember, this is one play for the Super Bowl. My list Walter Payton Not only the best running back, the best football player I have seen Marcus Allen One yard was a given and he even moved to fullback for a few years Emmit Smith Even though he had a great O line he was never tackled for a loss After that it is a tossup between a bunch of guys but Adrian is in the conversation If you are talking about the art of running the ball I wouldn't put either Marcus Allen or Emmit in there but that is where Barry Sanders and OJ and Eric Dickerson come into play. Adrian would have to be strongly considered to be in the top few. -
Sorry I didn't read the first post right. I think he is as good as gone. I would bet on a holdout if he isn't traded or offered a huge contract. I would trade him for either of the afforementiond QBs straight up or take what draft pick I could get for him. Maybe him and swapping first round picks would allow us to move up in the first round or maybe him and moving down in the first round would garner an extra second and 4th round pick.

Basically we are in the 3 year plan mode. Fight for the playoffs this year, go deep in the playoffs next year and win the Super Bowl the year after. The trouble is we still have too many needs to not hit on at least 4 picks and hopefully 5. It isn't that hard when you have 2 picks in the first 22 but when you get to where your first pick is 14-18 it becomes a matter of scouting. QB isn't fixable in this draft if they are thinking of winning the Super Bowl in 2 years. WR is a tricky position to fix draft wise or FA wise. O Line and Defensive front 7 could be fixable later in the draft. I also think more help in the secondary. That takes a big program and most everybody knows the guys who can play before the draft. I would be looking defense for the first pick, either an impact LB or a top d-back. I would also be looking at NDSU vs Sam Houston for a player I could steal in the 6th round.

Does that make him a restricted free agent? Then is it a sign and trade or something like that? I would trade him for Alex Smith or Matt Flynn!

He may be when his career is over but not yet. Walter Payton was a great runner but also a great pass catcher and picked up blitzers better than any other "star" runner that has ever played. Emmit Smith was close. Neither of them had nearly the # of negative runs that AP or Barry had. I would actually put Marcus Allen in third. After that comes Barry and then discuss betweeen AP and the rest. In my opinion AP has work to do to ever get in the top 2 as "all time running back" If the discussion is strictly about a runner then he is probally in the discussion with Barry, Walter, Eric Dickerson and OJ. -
I have watched football for a lot of years, so many that I was glued to the TV on Thanksgiving when OJ Simpson was considered the best player in the NFL. Add a few hundred High School and College games and that is a lot of football. Ponder's performance is probally the single worst I have ever seen in nearly 40 years of watching the game and that is sugar coating it. My appolagies to Trent Dilfer, Jim Harbaugh and Alex Smith, I actually thought Ponder could reach the level to be in the conversation of which you would rather have. He belongs with Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell with maybe Akili Smith throwed in. Absolutly awfull. I only hope he plays that bad for the rest of the season so there is no doubt and we can move as high as 6 wins allows in the draft. Here's to rooting for all hte 5 win teams to win a couple more.

exactly, and like anything there is no gaurentee it works for a chapionship but it is nearly certain that the suck for a while part happens. Very few teams are like the Ravens, Steelers and Pats where they go into every year with a legit chance. I would rather have a team that is always a 8-10 win projection and hope to catch lightning in a bottle once but I know there are a lot of people who only count championships. I can see both sides but I really don't like the 3-5 win seasons.

I posted the Alex Smith question in a different thread but didn't have much action so here is my take. Alex Smith to me represents the highest level Ponder could achieve. A system QB that doesn't really hurt you but can't rely on him to bring a team back from a hole. He can win quite a bit with a great D and a good running game but for a course of years he will be a 7-10 win QB unless you have the great D and running game. The question could be rephrased to this "Do the Vikes have the great D and running game to where they could make a serious run with Alex Smith?" My answer is only if they can add a couple more high enders through this year's draft. That would mean we would have to stink it up the rest of the year to move up and probally have to have someone bite on giving us something for Ponder or Toby to add more picks. Neither of those would bring over a 4th rounder IMHO so there would have to be some creative giving of the future for the now or being able to pick someone up in FA or both. Now the next question(or maybe the real one) would you rather see this team in contention aka 9-11 wins for the next 4-5 years or do the go big or go home route and have one great chance at a ring and know they will be lucky to win 6 games for the other 3-4 years?

Can I pick none of the above? No, that does not mean that I think Ponder is the answer. I think you have to give Ponder enough time to either stink it up good so we move up in the draft or he turns it around. Him turning things around would be my lesser choice because I think he is a 8-10 win a year QB that will keep us drafting mid to late for a while. My preference would be to ride him through the next 4 games anyway and by then the smell could be enough to cut ties. Unless everything turns around big time we won't win over 2 more games with any of the above and at least 1/2 will be free agents at the end of the season along with several others. Draft around 8-12 slot and add talent there and a QB through free agency unless someone really falls in the draft.

We do lack talent at the #1 and#2 receiver position(Percy is a slot guy) Right side of the line and very possibly talent at play calling but like I said Ponder damn well better be a work in progress because if his ceiling is 20% better than he is now that is poor. If it is 40-60% higher than his average play this year then I look foreward to seeing him play when he gets there.

I already took a guess at the record but it requires a lot of Kool-Aid to see my guess coming true. Defense is better than I thought it would be and special teams are great, Adrian is better than I though he would be but the offense, well it damn well better be a work in progress because it is poor even considering our lack of talent in some spots. Ponder has to get better and the play calling has to get more aggressive or we are going to go through a stretch of years where we are 8-10 wins and drafting at the last 1/2 of the round.

If any of them but especially Percy gets hurt getting 4 more wins would be a huge challenge.

You can call me "Paul Allen optimistic" but the start shouldn't be that big of a suprise 2 true superstars on offense(Percy and Adrian) One of the best pass rushers of the last 10 years Greenway has always been very good, now he looks like he may be the other true superstar on D. Put 2 guys on each side that are at the top of the heap of players and mix in a couple first round picks that play like veterans, a FA or 2 and let last years 1st rounder play with some protection and confidence and good thins happen. Besides this is the NFL where an average of 6 teams that missed the playoffs the year before make it the next. All of the bad breaks we had last year are paying dividends now. (I thought we should have been a 7-9 team last year) So we are due 4 wins from last year and should be a 9-7 team this year. Make that 11-5 and 2 playoff wins and see what happens in the NFC Championship game!

Gardy said something interesting last night. He said after Mauers walk that Lester started pounding the strike zone because he wanted to stay out there and that is what good pitchers do when their pitch count starts getting high. I would take a different approach to Liriano. I would tell him he is going to throw 120 pitches unless he completes the game first. I know Pinnella did that with someone when their pen was wore out and I think he gave up 17 runs but he turned things around right after that and ad a pretty decent couple years. What could it hurt. Even if he throws his arm out that wouldn't be a great loss the way he is going and if it worked Gardy would look like a genious.
