  1. I don't have a problem with Jake Mauer at AAA, though I think he is better in Florida. Other then Liddle at 3B I didn't think the other coaches were doing too bad of a job. I'm guessing that this points to a better get better or its your @$$ next year for Gardy. You don't fire 3-4 coaches and get much slack.
  2. As far as I know, Appel will be the most major league pitcher available. Now that can change between now and next June. He has no leverage, if he declines he will be a 23-24 year old in indy ball who has passed on two top 10 drafts. And if by some chance he does you get a 5th pick the following year. If he is gone in 6 years so be it, thats 6 years with a better pitcher then who was on the staff this year. The only complaint that is legit is whether or not he is healthy/ has he been over worked in college. I'll leave that to the scouts to decide.
  3. Thumb injuries suck balls, especially for power hitters. I don't think Plouffe will ever be a .300ba 35HR guy. But he will be a .230-.260ba 25 HR 20 2B and play marginal defense where he makes plays he shouldn't and bones plays he should.
  4. Guys the Twins were going to get rid of Hardy either way so I wouldn't blame Nishioka for it. I just think that it was everything went wrong since he came and he couldn't turn it around.
  5. I think something has to happen, its to the point where if Gardy doesn't make a move (or 2 or 3) and the Twins start slow next year many more will start calling for his head. If you make a move or 2 with your staff you give yourself a little more rope down the line. Personally I'd like a new pitching coach. I'd love Bert to come out of the booth because I really do think he knows how to pitch and did a good job with The Netherlands at the WBC last time around. But I doubt he'd consider it, as you can tell he likes his vacations and I really think his only goal post career in life was to get into the HOF and since hes done that I don't think he wants to coach. But I've heard good things about the AAA pitching coach so I'd go with him. The other move would be with the 3B coach. Its bad, nothing else I can or need to say.
  6. I like the guy, he has pitched well, but hasn't pitched a ton of innings, has had arm problems and is 31 years old. I just question handing out a 3 year deal.
  7. There are certain teams I'd stay away from trading with. Tampa Bay is one of them. In most cases they don't lose in the trades they make, most of the guys that get out of Tampa (whether trade or FA) don't go on to put up better numbers elsewhere. I'm not going to say a specific name (to target), but I think Span should be traded for a pitcher. I'd also field offers on Willingham. But may be more inclined to trade him during the season when someone needs an OF and would be inclined to pay more.
  8. The problem I have with Jamey Carroll, isn't what he does, or doesn't do for that matter. But the fact that he is on this team. Maybe I'm completely wrong here, but I feel Jamey is the type of guy on a playoff team, a guy who can play 3 infield positions, make the plays, hit .240, get on base, etc. The thing is he is what 38-39 years old? The Twins biggest hole (non-starting pitching) is middle infield, and I just feel like if he was a true utility guy, I'd be fine with it, but Gardy loves to give these type of players a starting role. The Twins should try to figure out who is there SS and 2B for the future next year, whether its Dozier, Florimon, Escobar, or someone else, and by giving Jamey Caroll 140 starts at 1 or the other just sets it back more.
  9. Most people expect Scocia to end up in Boston, many expect Francona to end up with the LAA. If the Twins were to make a move (which they won't), I'd rather go after him. I don't exactly blame Bobby V. for Boston's mess, it was a complete mess before he got to town, and he clearly wasn't the right fit for that. He'll go back to ESPN and I don't know if he will want to leave Bristol after the disaster in Boston. I think Gardy is a terrible manager in the sense of managing. When he use to pull Kubel for a pinch runner with 2 outs in the 7th of a tied game just blew my mind. Add in some terrible bullpen moves, and his Nick Punto obsession, and a few other of his blunders and its clear that I just don't think he is an A level manager. I'd put him in the middle B level. If there are 3 classes 8-10 guys in each class. However saying that, I think the front office needs to find a direction. Too me it looks like a bunch of guys with 1 foot out the door. Terry Ryan still has his interim tag on. Jim Rance is in his 70's. Dave St. Pierre has to be getting up there as well. So I'd rather have a front office move, (someone out of house, not TR's assistant (Bill Smith like move). Replace the rest of the house, still have these guys around for a year, and figure out what will happen.
  10. I don't get releasing him. He can sit at AAA, or AA, hes not blocking much in the organization and its not like Terry Ryan wouldn't go out and get another similar style reliever and stick him at AAA. The thing that makes Blackburn's deal worse then Joe May's is that he was under team control for these years. The Twins were bidding against themselves.Blackburn's agent deserves an award ford that contract because even if he would have pitched well during that contract he wasn't going to be getting much more in arbitration. I disagree with the Glen Perkins comparison/ move him to the pen talk. Perkins is a lefty (more valuable). Plus Perkins has an out pitch. However I wouldn't be against giving it a shot. Can't really hurt much.
  11. I'm still waiting on the news that Matt Capps will have shoulder surgery and miss the 2013 season. I just get a suspicion that it will happen only after the Twins have signed him
  12. I'd argue that the Beloit turtle is a top 5 mascot in minor league baseball. The Kernel? not so much
  13. Its not that Gardy is a moron for giving Casilla way too many opportunities its how they developed him. They called him up early, then sat him, then never let him struggle and play through it. Then he hurt his thumb and they rushed him back. Its not that Casilla has deserved more, or that he doesn't have some blame, its not like he was making it hard for Gardy to bench him. But its that Gardy seemed like he would rather put a Nick Punto at 2B then a Casilla. And that would be one thing if Punto was batting .280 but he wasn't. Put your self in that position, where any mistake you make, any slump you have, and Nick Punto and his .218 .ba as just taken over your position. And that goes with damn near all middle infielders the Twins have had, Gardy (and Terry Ryan) would rather go out on the market and get a .230 (decent obp and good club house guy) and block the middle infielder. That just doesn't work.
  14. I'm not saying NO, but I do have some issues on this. 1st. will he be ready by May 1st? 100%? Can he pitch 180 innings? Where is his velocity at in comparison? where is his control at? If he can't be ready until the middle of June, and his fast ball is sitting at 86 and his control isn't there. Then even a 2 million incentive base deal isn't a good one.
  15. I don't know if a parent club needs to send rehab to the low A team. But I think it would be a good move to maybe send a rehab player or 2 to each of your affiliates if possible. I know some would not want to go to Low A but some might.
  16. If the Twins really want him as a starter make him a starter in Spring training and then let him go. The problem seems to be they want him to be a reliever but the rotation sucks so bad he ends up being a starter. Which is hard to do. I think his high point is much higher as a reliever though. But if the Twins are going to go through 13 starting pitchers a year I'm going to say he is prolly one of the top 13 in the system. I'd bring up Bromberg or Hermsen though as starters before I played the bullpen to starter to bullpen game.
  17. I do think the Twins should be trying to locate a minor league affiliate closer to Minneapolis. I'd heard talk about Rapid City (SD) as a AAA affiliate, other rumors of Sioux City or Fargo, not much on Sioux Falls. I think St. Paul would work great for low A, ownership same as Ft. Myers, new stadium, etc. but with the rules of the MWL it just makes it look more like a 6-8 year project just to get it to happen. But we can still talk about it.
  18. Caleb Thielbar? Lefty reliever, I know he is 25 and was an independent league signing but he lit up A and AA and put up solid numbers at AAA, and is probably the first lefty bull pen arm to get the call from the Twins next year assuming he puts up similar numbers and the Twins don't make any signings. Jason Wheeler? Was the #1 starter for Beloit, a big guy, but not over powering. IDK where he is ranked in the top prospects, but I'd consider him some what under the radar. BJ Hermsen? Seems to have been overlooked by many the last year/year and half. Could be a big league starter next year. Arguably the top ready starting pitching prospect in the system. Michael Tonkin, Jason Kubel's brother in law, was slow to move up but lit up Beloit, and held his own at Ft. Myers. A guy who will prolly start in New Britain but could be a late season call up depending on many things as well.
  19. With Capps if the Twins resign him it will just be more good money chasing bad to try to make a bad trade look better Perkins is the closer, Burton the Setup man. Duensing is the lefty reliever who can go 1IP+ where Robertson is more of the lefty that is 1-2 batters. Thielbar is prolly the top lefty at Rochester in the bullpen, and he is kinda inbetween a 1IP to maybe 2IP reliever. I don't think left handed bullpen arms are a big problem for the Twins As far as righties, you have Burton as the setup (previously stated), Swarzak the long relief, Fein is the 7th inning guy. So we have 7-8-9th pretty rapped up with Duensing (lefty 7th) Fein (righty 7th) Burton 8th, Perk 9th. Robertson the 1AB lefty specialist guy in the middle of it. That is 6 guys right there. The 1-2 other spots my guess would be a Manship, Perdomo, Guerra, or 6th starter, or rule 5 pickup.
  20. If I was the GM I'd stay within the system, maybe look at adding a rule 5 pick if you can find one. But I think looking at the 7 guys mentioned and the 3-5 that will end up in AAA that its not something that resources should be spent on. I've had a saying that I like to repeat, I hope every year that the Twins don't go after bullpen or middle infielders during free agency, because the guys they target and the money they spend, are just more expensive options then what is available within the system. My guess would be that 1 of the starters in ST is sent to the pen, and the rest is what we are looking at right now. And I don't see a problem with that. though I think Burnett is getting towards the end of his scholarship, he is not effective at all right now
  21. What is the overlying issue that is causing so many teams (on both sides) to test the waters. Is it just a game of musical chairs, where since 1 or 2 are open everyone is open or is it more then that? Seems like there are a handful of MWL teams that have the upper hand, and a handful that will end up with whatever is left (Beloit is one). But it seems like there are a handful in the middle that are open as well. Just seems like I've heard way more this year then any other year when it comes to affiliate shuffling
  22. Low-A ball, not Beloit atleast the Twins faithful don't hope so.
  23. I don't have a problem with holding a high schooler or an international player back an extra year. But the 22-23 year old college draftees need to be pushed through the system. It needs to be a they flamed out or they succeeded, not a well he wasn't 100% ready so we kept him an extra year in low A.
  24. Span and Willingham because of production in relation to contract. Sano, Hicks Arcia, because of prospect status. Mauer (if salary compensation is included)
  25. My guess is Sano starts in Fort Myers, and assuming he starts well, will move up to New Britain when the weather gets warmer. My guess is then that in 2014 he will start the season in AAA and then prolly move up around July 1st. Though he had good numbers at low A, it wasn't like he completely destroyed low A either. He struck out his fair share and had a period where his defense struggled. I'd go with the same plan for Vargas
