Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Dodgers are pursuing high-leverage relievers and have called the Twins on righties Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax. It's not surprising the Dodgers are pursuing pitching. Between injuries and underperformance, what looked like an untouchable staff has been rather pedestrian thus far in 2025. Tanner Scott, owner of a shiny new multi-year deal, is pitching to a 4.00 ERA and has a handful of blown saves. Duran and Jax will be costly. As two of the most elite late-inning relievers in baseball, both will be highly sought after if the Twins decide to sell at the deadline. Both Jax and Duran are under team control through the 2027 season and have displayed late-inning dominance for multiple years, along with relative health. Jon Heyman reports that the Mets have checked on Twins left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe, a move that aligns with New York’s deadline priority of adding a high-leverage lefty out of the pen. Coulombe, 35, has been one of the American League’s most efficient relievers in 2025. Through 26 2/3 innings he owns a 0.68 ERA and a 1.70 FIP, pairing a 27 percent strikeout rate (9.8 K/9) with only 6 percent walks (2.4 BB/9) and zero home runs allowed across 35 appearances. His 0.9 fWAR already matches last season’s total. Coulombe's return would not be enormous for the Twins, but given his sheer dominance and left-handedness, there should be multiple suitors calling on him should the Twins decide to sell. Did "so many" want to dump Buxton? I see a loud, moronic minority scream about crap like that, but most Twins fans know better.

Agreed the piecemealing needs to stop. I'm a bit surprised at this news, as everything I've seen up to this point indicated that MLB is trying to set up for a big swing in 2028. They're trying to convince as many teams as possible to sign through the 2027 season and no later, then work on selling the entire works as a bundle. Which makes all the sense in the world, which is very un-MLB-like.

I agree the Padres are the most likely to bail, though Atlanta might be an option as well.

You need 24 teams to approve a measure in MLB. There are seven teams in that powerhouse quadrant. One of them will need to defect.
