  1. It's a simple measuring stick. If you're getting a win from a free agent player for $3.5m, you've done pretty well for yourself because the average team spends $7-9m for each win above replacement level. It was in response to Jorgens, who implied that Doumit was pricey, which he obviously is not.
  2. Well, at least we got one good game out of the day. I don't have much faith in this game turning out so well...
  3. Yeah. That's exactly how it works. price paid /=/ performance received
  4. I've had very little to complain about. And that's unusual. Kudos to Gardy for his management thus far. I don't agree with it all but I agree with enough of it to keep my mouth shut.
  5. Arcia with the battlefield commission. Strange. Gardenhire and Ryan have both acted quite out of character this season and while they haven't hit on everything (Hicks), at least they're making the team interesting to follow.
  6. Sabre-dudes used teh maths to calculate that if you ran out a bunch of waiver wire, AAA-types, you'd end up with a win total somewhere in the low to mid 50s. I can't remember the exact number. Of course, it's not impossible to go under that number if you really really try to do it. But it's really rare. Look at the 2012 Astros. They were absolutely awful and traded away every player with a pulse in July and still ended up around 55 wins.
  7. Agreed. I understand why owners are loathe to schedule them but damn, I love me a doubleheader.
  8. Like Ernie Banks once said... Lineups: Twins: Brian Dozier 2B Joe Mauer DH Oswaldo Arcia LF Justin Morneau 1B Ryan Doumit C Chris Parmelee RF Eduardo Escobar SS Aaron Hicks CF Jamey Carroll 3B (Mike Pelfrey P) Flounders: Chris Coghlan LF Placido Polanco 3B Giancarlo Stanton RF Greg Dobbs DH Justin Ruggiano CF Rob Brantly C Chris Valaika SS Joe Mahoney 1B Donovan Solano 2B (Ricky Nolasco P)
  9. My math was bad. It's $7-9m per win above replacement (which is somewhere around 55 wins in total, I believe).
  10. Oswaldo Arcia: strong like bull. Holy crap, he launched that thing.
  11. What about this shirt? Nice and simple.
  12. I'm definitely not married to the Minnesota icon on the car. Anyone else?
  13. Slideshows are just fine... If you're using actual slides. Of images. Without text. (okay, so you can use a little text, just don't make it the focus of the piece)
  14. One of the WORST TRENDS in web design and development. Half the time, the slideshows don't even generate additional pageviews (and therefore, revenue), as they're an in-page JS/JQ element. It's as if their sole purpose is to annoy the userbase. Just awful.
  15. Parker and I are tossing around ideas for baseball-themed shirts this season. We originally envisioned this design as a basic "bring back bullpen cars" but decided that it'd be better if we focused on the Twins' best relief pitcher instead. Thoughts? Ideas? Criticisms?
  16. Heh. In 2007, Ortiz started off with a 3-1 record, 2.57 ERA, and 35 IP in April. He ended the season with a 4-4 record, 5.41 ERA, and only 91 IP. I didn't even bother looking up Livan's numbers because I'm tired of cleaning vomit off my keyboard.
  17. You honestly don't see how you baited people with this thread? You refer to detractors as "armchair pitching experts", then use a three start sample to prove a point that no one is arguing. Correia has pitched well. That's great. I don't see anyone groaning every time he throws another start that keeps the Twins in the game. It's three starts. If he stays healthy all season, that's less than 10% of his starts. Nobody here who has watched baseball for more than five minutes is going to start changing their opinion of Correia (who has been in MLB for almost a decade) based on three starts in miserable weather facing a new league in April. You're just asking for half the members of this forum to bookmark this thread and revive it in August for the sole purpose of mocking you for taking such a high and mighty attitude in a ridiculously SSS.
  18. Yep. And given Burton's importance to the pen in the next couple of seasons, I have no issues with them taking a cautious approach.
