I wish they tracked stats for guys like this. It would be a fun group to follow in the offseason

That's actually against the spirit of the instructs. Instructional league is a place where the go to learn something regardless on how that might bomb during the learning process. Stats would be counter productive...

Right, as much as I would like to see a lot more information coming out of there, it's purpose is instruction. And, it is meant to be in a low-stress environment. Keeping and posting stats would kind of go against that.

Don't they kinda play games amongst themselves half-the-time? By the way, who is on staff this Fall.

I will be in Fort Myers and may be able to catch some action. I will make sure I get any info I can to you guys.

What you should do (if you have time and would like) is set up a forum in the minor league section titled Reports from Instructional League (or something like that), and whenever you get over to the fields, just write up a little something each time of your observations. That would be wonderful!

It is just what it says, Instructional League, like the beginning of the season before the short-season leagues happen. The guys play ball. They work on fundamentals. They try and experiment with different things. It is like baseball school. You play games amongst yourself, and other similar teams. No big need to win or lose, just develop. Like what Little League should be.........

So it is preseason (or post season depending on your point of view) extended spring training???

So why is AB Walker there after being MVP at Cedar Rapids?? Shouldn't he get some rest??

I'm pretty sure he's going to be there to stand in the batters box and watch breaking balls so starts to recognize which ones to swing at and which ones to lay off. He was only walking 5.6% of his plate appearances this year. Also, a SO/BB ratio of 115/31 in Low A ball is not a great sign.

He had a great season. I'm not going to deny him that, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have anything to work on.

Sano and Rosario were there a year ago. There are things in Walker's swing that need to improve for him to do well as he advances. There are things with his defense as he played a lot of 1B in college. It's definitely not a knock on the players. In fact, it's an "invitation" thing.

I found Pineda's inclusion to be interesting. He got off to a pretty pedestrian start in CR last spring, but made a lot of improvement in terms of making contact and finding ways to get on base by year's end. He' Got speed when he does get on base. Maybe a little bit like JD Williams' situation a year ago. I'd like to see him make a Williams-like improvement next year.

I'm surprised Tyler Grimes didn't get asked to be part of the instructional time to help him transition even more to catcher. Would his exclusion be simply because of other having other catchers with more need/upside?

Williams absolutely needed another 1/2 season in the Midwest League. He was very talented, but very raw, and he really cleaned up his game in 2013... Pineda is a lot smaller than JD. JD is actually really strong and fast. But, if Pineda can get on base, he can do some things...

Could be, and he was there last year. There are other younger players who they need to get acclimated as well.

I live here in Ft. Myers and frequent the Instructs, if there is any video or details that people want to know just give me a heads up and I will gladly do it. I did this last year with some good results too. Last year's roster looked alot better with bigger names but there are still plenty of great prospects down here.

Buxton and Kepler were here last year so was Kyle Gibson and Joe Benson.
