Señor Palacios

What can anyone tell us about this kid? He's now batting over .400 for Elizabethton after a single, double & SB tonight (in 3 innings). With 131 ABs this year his combined average is nearly .415 and only 14 Ks. He's just turned 19. I'm not making a case for moving up to the majors...although...nah! Just wonder if he came in highly regarded and how large a bonus did he receive, etc? Certainly a good reason to check the Elizabeth box score every night.

From the link:

"The Twins signed infielder Jermaine Palacios out of Venezuela in September of 2013 for $70,000 (hat tip, Jeremy Nygaard). He is long and lanky and a good athlete. He spent 2014 in the Dominican Summer League where he hit .270/.404/.399 (.802) with 11 doubles and six triples. He also stole 14 bases in 17 attempts. He was invited to Twins minor league spring training and started the season with extended spring training. He began the short season in the GCL and hit .421/.472/.589 (1.061) with nine doubles, two triples and a home run. On the final day of July, he was promoted to Elizabethton where he went 3-5 in each of his first two games. He has homered in two of his three games there.

One Twins-related person said of Palacios that he is a "hard-working kid. He has the ability to play shortstop and has good quickness."

Palacios has really good bat speed and the ability to hit to all fields.

As impressive, the just-turned-19-year-old has a very high baseball IQ.

Palacios had a huge July and has made himself one to watch as the season continues to move forward and beyond."

I like how this "JAVIER" prospect comparison system has him ranked amongst all players in its system...#22.

I also like how this system feels about Sano...#8. Buxtion was somewhere in the 60's, which was still good.

That is one of the stranger lists I have ever seen.

I've heard a lot of those same things about Palacios. He's certainly made an impression and he is still young... He could wind up in my Top 30 or so.

He's breaking into the prospect scene in the same way Arcia has (though he's a bit more selective with the bat).  He's not a big bonus sign either.  Given what he did in rookie ball this year as an 18/19 yo, I have to think he's going to be starting in Cedar Rapids next year.  Doing well there as a SS will start getting him national attention.

And I like how this interesting development with Palacios keeps Nick Gordon on his toes. Nothing better to get the best out of the best, than with a little threat to their future job security.

Palacios displayed a lot of potential last season in the DSL: 15.6% BB, 16.1% K (.95 BB/K), .802 OPS, and 14/17 on stolen bases in 49 games.  This makes me think his performance this year is no fluke.

His plate discipline translated to the GCL this year--8.5% BB, 10.4% K (.82 BB/K)--and he has displayed much improved power: after 17 XBH last season in 49 games, he has already posted 17 XBH this year in just 34 games.

Palacios and Blankenhorn should be two worth watching the rest of the way in Elizabethton.

Yeah, here is an introduction article describing what goes into the system

I like that KATOH forecasting system from Fangraphs a bit better, but still fun to look at names that are high on both.

Fun to compare number projections in a addition to what scouts say.

He's put himself in the discussion, but he's not in the Arcia category. He's had a very nice year. And he'll almost certainly start next year in Cedar Rapids.

Ranked him 36th about a year ago.   He will be higher this season.  Looks like he will stick at SS.  The comparable I gave was Alexi Ramirez who I think might be spot on.

Hard to understand what that is without context :)

4 for 5 tonight with 4 singles. His average in Elizabethton is .455 and for the season .439. Silly numbers. I assume they won't move him up again this year unless they move Gordon who has him blocked out of Cedar Rapids. Gordon is hitting around .272.

I am certainly getting ahead of myself, but when is the last time the Twins have had a minor leaguer finish the tear above .400? The Twins have 25 games left, the Kernels have 37. If he played in 22 of the 25 games and averaged 4 ABs he'd need to hit .352 to finish the year above .400.

I don't know when it happened. Ben Revere came close in A ball during his first full season if I remember right, but rookie leagues are much shorter. SSS I know, but certainly exciting.

In yesterday's twin bill he went 1-3 (a double) and 2-4 (singles). For the day 3-7. Average plummeted from .451 to .448.
