Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 I'd add to it that if he continues to pitch well, his best value may be the QO that he rejects.Past qualifying offers to SP: Kuroda (twice)Lohse (coming off a 133 ERA+, and 121 over 2 seasons)Santana (twice, coming off a 127 ERA+ and then 109 over 2 seasons)Jimenez (coming of a 115 ERA+, with a 112 career mark)ScherzerShieldsLiriano After his clunker the other night, Pelfrey is down to a 105 ERA+ with a notably below average FIP, 89 ERA+ for his career, and was basically replacement level or injured for the previous 4 seasons. The odds of him even being a QO candidate, which were low to begin with, have dropped to near-zero, I think. He would probably have the worst combination of recent + career performance to ever get a QO. (Even Stephen Drew was coming off a 111 OPS+, career 98, and ~15 WAR over parts of 8 seasons. Pelfrey is at 6.8 bWAR, 11.3 fWAR over parts of 10 seasons.)
blairpaul715 Verified Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 They've certainly improved. But I'd hardly call a 13th best ERA and the 22nd best xFIP solid. That's with the worst K/9 rate, yet again in the majors and having the 6th highest LOB% and 13th highest BABIP resulting in the 7th highest WHIP. We better hope that Santana comes in and pitches well and TR and Co. make the correct choice in moving Pelfrey to the pen, because there's only downside here. He was referring to starting pitching, i believe, and I am almost sure i seen on the Twins broadcast that the Twins starters ERA was like 8th best(3.79?) in the ML this yr, their bullpen is another issue. I am going off of memory on the 8th best, and 3.79, but i know it was not 13th.
