    I don't think Austin is good enough defensively to make the team as the team's sole fourth outfielder.

    I'm fine with that because Perez, Moya, Vasquez, Romero, and Hildenberger's individual performances will dictate how much we end up seeing any of those guys this year. We will probably see Perez more at the beginning of the year but that doesn't mean we won't end up seeing any of those other guys pitching more games than Perez by the time the season is over.

    But Cron, Parker, and Schoop would be making the major league roster even if they had options because they are better and more major-league ready than the minor league guys we have waiting in the wings.

    Ahh okay I misread that. Well I'm sure everybody has differing opinions on the guys at the end of the 40-man, but I have no problem with them replacing a guy like Duffey or Granite with Perez.

    I would argue that they gain roster flexibility with this move in that they gain another guy to decide from for the 5th spot. Sure he has a leg up on the competition right now, but $3.5 million is such a small amount of money that the Twins would probably fine cutting bait with him around June if he isn't performing. When you say that someone with options on the 40 man is going to lose their spot, that's only for the beginning of the year. Injuries and bad performance are going to happen, possibly even in Spring Training, and the guys on the 40 man with options will end up getting their chances. The Cron, Schoop, and Parker moves aren't losing the team roster flexibility either. We currently don't have minor league guys that are ready to step into those spots anyways.

    Fair point, yes. And they could always have signed Allen AND Perez.

    Poor Sonny Gray has his work cut out for him. But the Reds are already discussing an extension with him, so good for Sonny.

    Cody Allen signed for over double what we paid for Perez. In terms of big fish pitchers remaining in FA, this move doesn't handicap our ability to sign Kimbrel or Keuchel, if we so choose to go after those guys. This move also doesn't prohibit us for trading for a big money reliever if they choose to go that route.

    This is a lot of outrage for such a low-risk move. As mentioned before by several people, I assume the FO has identified something in Perez and think they can get better performance out of him than he's shown in the past. He seems like one of these classic "introduce a cutter and he's good" pitchers a la Anibal Sanchez and Wade Miley. And if he doesn't work out, we still have several 5th starter depth options that will be ready to step in if we move him to the bullpen or cut him. Guys like Gonsalves, Stewart, Romero, Littell, etc. will not be hurt by spending additional time in AAA. Likewise with Mejia and the bullpen. And last but not least, this measly $3.5 million contract in no way prevents the Twins from chasing some of the big free agency fish still left.

    Right, and I agree with a majority of the comments he makes regarding the payroll in this segment. But at times he makes mention of this misconception he has that fans think the team should be able to spend $150+ million each year, which is the condescending tone that tends to come across when he tries to discuss this (and to his credit he even admits he thinks he comes off condescending at times in this segment).

    He literally starts out that segment by saying "Why is it hard to figure out why the Twins don't spend with the Yankees or the Phillies?"

    I want to preface this by saying that I have not yet listened to this segment, so perhaps I am wrong on this, but I think the issue with the wording of this poll and Mackey's stance in general is that he thinks Twins fans expect ownership to spend at a level that is competitive with the top spenders in the league. While I know that there are some fans that probably do expect that, the majority of Twins fans (specifically fans that follow and respond to the likes of Mackey, LEN3, BW, the TD folks, etc. on twitter) are smart enough to understand the Twins' payroll situation and limitations and don't need be talked down to as if we don't comprehend.

    But.... the thing is, adding an Ottavino-type reliever or two would have moved the needle. Every single one of the middle- to upper-tier relievers that were available this offseason have track records and/or recent performances better than most of the Twins' current relievers. And none of those relievers ended up signing contracts that would prove to be a bad investment for the Twins with the incredibly flexible payroll situation they find themselves in. Obviously, though, there is still some offseason left for them to make some moves.

    I think it primarily started with fans flooding the mentions of various Twins media members expressing frustration after Ottavino and Allen came off the board. LEN3 and Mackey--amongst others--have been responding to fans with their own (valid) opinions about payroll and other Twins-related offseason topics, but have kind of been using a condescending tone at times. It's been quite amusing.

    Twins twitter got pretty heated today, which was honestly kind of awesome. But I think it's healthy for fans to express their frustrations and opinions. It's unfortunate certain members of the media tend to "dunk" on fans considering every person on twitter (including the TC media!!!) is obviously supremely unqualified when it comes to putting together a baseball team. We know what we know, the media knows what they know, and the people running the team know 1,000,000x more than the fans and media combined. There's clearly a reason the Twins are sitting at $96 million today, but because we don't have access to that reason, we have a right to be annoyed with that number. If anything, the interactions today showed this fan base is still passionate, and to Nick's point, is ready for this team to start making a run for it. "You gotta jump in to swim."
