1. That lineup plus Pelfrey on the mound does not inspire a lot of confidence, but I thought for sure Correia would end up being the cure for the Angels hitting woes last night, so we shall see. Mauer had an outstanding game last night, hopefully he can keep that going. Tonight would be win number 6. That's same number of wins we had after 24 games on May 2nd last year. (God that first month was a living baseball hell.)
2. I'm getting a good chuckle out of how Slowey begins the year with a few good starts at it's "OMG! WE GAVE UP ON THE NEXT ROY HALLADAY!", but Correia does the same and it's "Meh, he'll suck the rest of the year."
3. ---All rightee, this thread has officially jumped the shark. Slowey blossoming into another Halladay? Wow.
4. You make yourself sound like a really good pitcher. How many major league wins do you have since your less-than-amicable parting with the Twins?
5. ---I know, but there was a claim that he did. Perhaps that was just a reference to something that happened in NFL '95 on Sega Genesis in the parents' basement.
6. When did Marino lead an undefeated NFL team?
7. Not good AB's by Morneau or Doumit there.
8. Wait, do we almost have a ball game here?
9. ---Ah, yes, the Ricky Bobby view, "if you're not first, you're last". Either you win it all, or you suck. That's why Jeff Hostetler was a better quarterback than that loser Dan Marino.
10. I've got a call - Hammer ends the no-hit bid here.
11. Gardy will never win with some people. When he comes down on players who dog it or screw up, they criticize him for being a big meanie. When he fails to come down on players who dog it or screw up, he's ripped for coddling them. When he keeps a struggling player the lineup in hopes he can play through it, they cry for Gardy to bench him. When Gardy benches struggling players, they whine about Gardy giving up on guys too easily. It may be time to sever ties with Gardy, but if that's the approach you're going to take towards managers, don't expect to be any happier with his replacement.
12. Shine on you crazy Diamond, and get us a W. Let's go back to that thing where we were losing the first game of the series and winning the last two. I liked that better.
13. I don't see Gardy getting fired during the season unless things spiral completely out of control. He may well not be brought back next year, so in that sense I guess he's in the hot seat, but I think there will be several guys who lose their jobs before Gardy loses his. (To be clear, I'm not advocating that's how it should be, I'm just saying that's how I think it will play out.)
14. But this is coming from Jon Heyman, so that probably means his job is completely safe.
15. ---Yeah I thought this year would be better than last year. Not a ton more wins, but at least more competitive games. And I guess there have been, but this one and Pelfrey's last start followed the all too familiar script of the game being over before the Twins heart of the order even had a chance to bat. As far as the not caring thing, I think they do care, but when you're facing an 8-run deficit in the second inning, I'm sure it's hard not to feel defeated. That said, I see your point. The T-Wolves are my winter distraction, and it's been a long year from them thanks mostly to injuries. But when you watch Rubio at the end of games, he plays hard until the last whistle and, you can tell how he feels about losing. He hates it with the white hot passion of a thousand burning suns. It disgusts him to his very core. I understand that over the course of 162 games, you can't get too high or too low, or live and die with every game. But I'd like to see more of that revulsion of losing expressed by the Twins sometimes.
16. In addition to this abortion, Winfield signs with Seattle, the Wolves fumble another game away in the final minutes, and all of the teams the Wild needed to lose tonight are getting points. Such is the life of a Minnesota sports fan.
17. ---Well that's for damn sure. It's nothing remotely resembling baseball, more like watching a troop of drunk baboons trying to hump a doorknob.
18. To retrieve the ball from the home run he gave up earlier in the evening, which finally landed just now?
19.
Starter removed in first 3 innings Rally-killing GIDP Gardenhire ejected Backbreaking play/hit by former Twin on opposing team Error leading to unearned runs Get RISP with <2 out and fail to score Bone-headed base-running maneuver Twins youngster completely overmatched at plate Passed ball/wild pitch
Hate to be so negative, but game is the culmination of a painful week.
20. ---I will run down Nicollet Mall at midnight wearing nothing but a Homer Hanky and singing "We're Gonna Win Twins" at the top of my lungs if we come back and win this game.
21. ---But at least you get free coffee and hot chocolate!
22. I didn't realize Ike Davis was Ron's son, how did I miss that?
23. And there's the defense that makes bad innings even worse. What time do the T-Wolves tip off?
24. A Twins starter spots the opposition a few runs before most fans have settled into their seats. We only saw that, what, 125 times last year?
