  1. Actually, most of the credit should go th ashburyjohn who approached Stew and I. What I like best about this so far is that one can see how much thought and re-creation goes into these scoring evaluations. It is not knee-jerk stuff. One can agree or disagree, but one can't charge a lack of intention and effort.
  2. On Sunday's game in the TwinsDaily thread, there was a question that was raised about a play Oswaldo Arcia failed to make. It was ruled a hit, and a few members thought it was an error. It turns out that the official scorer that day, Stew Thornley, is a member of Twins Daily and has published some stories here, so I asked him about it. (Stew is VERY conscientious and pretty open about his decisions. In fact, he did a presentation at the Mpls SABR convention this summer that was universally praised. The job of scorer is a really tough one - almost everyone feels it is fair game to criticize you, not matter which side you take - and Stew takes it incredibly seriously.) Here was Stew's response: I thought I'd start this thread as a place for people to ask about scoring decisions that they don't understand. Perhaps we can get some insight from Stew or others on how things usually work, such as the "leaving the feet" or "below the knees" guideline he mentions above.

  4. Aaron and John's Minnesota Twin podcast moves to KFAN 100.3 FM, but that's not the only change. The Twins relatively positive start also fuels their most optimistic episode, where they talk about Kevin Correia's fantastic start, the bullpen's impact and depth and the struggles some of the younger players in the lineup are facing. Here are: the podcasts the rss feed if you want to subscribe and the podcast on iTunes. [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] Or click below to listen.

  6. First, I'll agree - the Twins are seriously hamstringing themselves if they don't learn to fill in gaps through the free agent market. But I'll veer off from the direction of the story in two important ways: 1) After this year, and certainly not this offseason, I don't think the problem was the Pohlads. I just don't know that Terry Ryan is wired such that he will go and spend big money on a free agent. His philosophy is to build from within, and it isn't wholely out of necessity. He wants to give young ballplayers a chance. The only way that changes is with a different GM - and then only maybe, since I expect much of the front office shares that sentiment. 2) Of, he could, you know, give $20 million or $50 million per year to something like AIDS research. That might improve some lives. I'm not a big fan of telling someone how they should spend their money. The Pohlads aren't going to treat the Twins like a toy - and truth be told, that has worked out pretty well for both them and for Minnesota Twins fans. Maybe responsible, long-term, fiscally conservative management is better for a team (and a fan base) than throwing a bunch of money around on a yearly basis. It's possible, at least.
  7. Regardless of eveyone's medical background, the facts remain... 1) This problems started on 3/25 2) It took 3 weeks to get him on the DL 3) Within a few days, the diagnosis has changed dramatically and for the worse. The most likely explanations seem to be: 1) that Mastro is REALLY good at hiding the problem, which he might be, but it's not like they didn't know he was injured. They openly talked about how limited he would be and when he could come back to the lineup. Or... 2) that he wasn't all that bad, but it got a lot worse. Well, yeah, that can happen when you continue to play on an injury. And if it was one time, that would be fine, but it happens over and over. Baker, Pavano, Span, Plouffe, Morneau... and that's off the top of my head.
  8. Tyler Mason of foxsportsnorth.com writes about Mike Redmond and how everyone knew he would eventually become a manager. It gives the background and a lot of praise from ex-teammates: It might beg the question of why they Twins weren't able to find room for him in their organization, though that would just mean he would have left them for the Marlins instead of the Blue Jays organization. But I wonder how he is ever going to survive this year. They're a terrible team. Ownership is incredibly incompetent. Connecting with fans at this point is near impossible. Does he have any chance to survive even to the end of next year? (And can he please coach for us when they fire him?) Twins always knew Redmond was manager material
  9. Mike Berardino gives us some bad news in a lot of ways.... This raises all kinds of questions.... 1. If Hicks doesn't get any better, what the hell do the Twins do for CF? Is he stuck here now, no matter how much it might hurt him? 2. So the Twins waited three weeks to put him on the DL - and now he could be out for months? 3. How come the Twins are the only team that seems to never find anything the first few times on and MRI? Is it possible they're not using the right end? And here, of course, is the best part when talking about the disfunctional nature of the Twins medical environment... I guess one could say Maestro is a gamer. He likely is. But ultimately the freaking manager has to step in? Really? Is nobody on the training staff/medical team watching this stuff? Minnesota Twins: Darin Mastroianni could be out awhile - TwinCities.com
  10. NM. I see now. It's a video we need to embed.
  11. "which would look something like this to the Vanimal" Is there supposed to be a link there or something? BTW, The Voice of Reason and The Chatty Chatty Princess saw Turandot the night before.
  12. It's possible. I'm not going to deny that it's possible.
  13. So far regarding Correia, we were wrong. Twins scouting is trumping our historical analysis. TR was right and we were tremendously, beautifully, triumphantly wrong. I think about everyone on this board hopes that remains the case. And I don't just mean for May. I mean for all of 2013. And 2014.
  14. Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press points out that yesterday was the 2-year anniversary of Jared Burton's arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Burton has been every bit as good, if not better, than Glen Perkins this year, but the Twins still are going to err on the side of caution with how much he's used. I'm all for caution, and one cannot argue with the results from Burton so far. But Burton says it isn't a problem. For a team that relies so much on players to tell them if they're healthy or not, isn't it a little weird that they don't trust a guy who says he's heatlhy and is two years away from his last setback? Minnesota Twins' Jared Burton has been a stabilizing force in the bullpen - TwinCities.com
  15. I've heard this, but have not seen Safeco. I suppose I could change my mind when I see it. I hope to this summer.

  17. Seems like an appropriate time for this topic.... Tyler Mason of FSN gave his take on the "Should Target Field have been built with a roof?" debate. Even if it could have (and I believe it probably could have, one way or the other) he wouldn't have. I've been pretty steadily preaching the same message for 10 years BEFORE Target Field was opened. But today, I'm certainly open to listening to other points of view (and I probably was on Opening Day, too.) Mason: Target Field delivers true outdoor feel
  18. Welcome to the Twins Daily Newsroom! We're providing the RSS feeds below as a service to our members, but it would be much appreciated if you use it to help the community generate discussion. If you find a story you like, head over to the forums and check to see if anyone else has added a story. If not, kick off the discussion! [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] Here's the template we suggest: 1. 19. I'm really surprised the correlation seems to be this close. Thanks for putting this out there. I'd be very interested in a more extensive study. Is there a site someplace that lists how many quality starts each team had last year and the year before?
  20. I'm reopening it since I have a little bandwidth. I've talked to various people involved since the 18th, when most of this went down. I think we're all on the same page. So if anyone else wants to track some pitchers we didn't get, I'm certainly interested. My top two "name" pitchers were Ervin Santana and Ryan Dempster. Any word on them?

  22. Twins Daily is very excited to welcome Ticket King to our community today. Actually, Ticket King started being a part of our Twins Daily community a couple of weeks ago – you might recall that the owner Mike Nowakowski blogged about meeting Josh Roenicke at the Welcome Home Luncheon. Ticket King also prides itself on being part of the Twin Cities community. Their offices are located in downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. They like to meet and talk with Minnesota sports fans. (Just stop by the Minneapolis office sometime and ask to Mike to show you around.) Ticket King’s attachment to that community philosophy is deep enough to run upstream of the online ticket boom. Unlike some of the monstrous ticket web sites, Ticket King focuses mostly on the Twin Cities ticket market, whether it be Wild, Vikings, Wolves, Twins or concerts. What’s more, they don’t just “broker” ticket sales. They own a good chunk of their inventory, so you can escape the fees other sites charge by dealing directly with the locally-based Ticket King. The value of community is one we relate to at Twins Daily. So we’re very pleased that Ticket King has agreed to sponsor several site takeovers (like you see today) throughout the Twins 2013 season. They’re also adding some much needed functionality to the site – a 2013 Minnesota Twins schedule. You can also expect some stories from them about the different fan experiences at Target Field. So please join me in welcoming Ticket King to the Twins Daily community. We hope that if you need Twins tickets, you’ll give them a chance to prove to you what they’ve proved to us – that they’re dedicated to providing Twins fans with the best possible experience for their money.

  24. Aaron and John return to 612 Brew and are joined by a couple guests: Parker Hageman of Twins Daily and 612 Brew's head brewer Adam Schill. Together, they recap a ridiculously short week for the Twins, admire Big Papi's speech, wonder from whom will Oswaldo Arcia take playing time, explain why you should subscribe to Minnesota Business magazine, catch up with some top Twins prospects with hot starts, explain what happened after the last podcast, review the Darin Mastroianni injury saga, and summarize Dick Bremer's and Bert Blyleven's discussion on "cybermetrics."
