Lots of good reports about Kyle Gibson...
3up3down replied to John Bonnes's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I have been in ft myers & have been watching live BP & games, Gibson looked great, his stuff is above avg & his mound presence is very good. I liked what I saw from Worley, Wood,& Walters looked good.. Same ole from Deduno, good stuff but has no idea where it's going. I have never liked Hendricks mound presence & i saw him shake his arm & flex his elbow after the run scoring double, what was odd was no one came out to see about him, if that had been pelfrey they would have been coaches & trainers sprinting to the mound. Palfrey has looked really good in his pens, anxious to see him tomorrow. -
Bollinger: Recovered Hendriks hopes to reclaim starting job
3up3down replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I am pulling for the guy, i just see it different, more 88-91 which is definately enough velocity but it is just avg, with little movement or sink ,which makes it below avg.,below avg change & below avg curve, his control could be a plus , but thats his only upside that i see , control & deception..i dont think he makes the team out of camp but the twins will need him at some point this season.. -
Bollinger: Recovered Hendriks hopes to reclaim starting job

you know i am definately not as high on hendricks as most on here but i noticed in your interview that he is working to align his mechanics , hendricks throws across his body big time & i really hope thats not the part he is trying to fix because i think thats his only +, he is deceptive because pitching that far across his body hides the ball, if he changes that i will be even lower on him if thats possible.. if you can watch that in his pen & see if thats the part he is changing , if it is tackle him.. -
i have said my case against hendricks several times before, i just dont see what most on here see, to be remotely successful in the bigs you need atleast 1 plus pitch, he has none , they are all average at best, he is a #5 or long man in the NL...devries ,walters & deduno have better stuff. i am rooting for him because the twins really need him, but i dont think the results are going to be what we are hoping for. i really dont think his #s will be that good in AAA again. i know he pitched some good games (seattle) but if you run a guy out there enough he is bound to pitch good every now & then. the only thing that gives me hope for hendricks is his AAA #s, i have to say he did dominate there. but AAA is not the bigs.
-
i agree with Lew, devries pitched the most consistent & he is right he has earned a chance to compete for a spot & there is no doubt he will compete with others like deduno, walters, hendricks, etc..but out of all those the better pitcher was walters, when he 1st came up he was very impressive & then he was injured, if healthy he will be in the mix, and i dont think a 40 man spot matters at all , TR made it clear he doesnt mind clearing a spot...and when the ones that dont make the team go to rochester there is no #6,7 or 8 , the only thing that matters then is who is pitching the best & most consistent & possibly whos day it lines up with..and harden will never see rochester, he either makes the team or if not ready stays in extended getting healthy & goes up, if a spot doesnt open up he opts out, no way he pitches in rochester..
-
hes has pretty much convinced me, he has more big league starts that walters, deduno or devries..& he has been terrible. the only thing he has going for him is hes still only 23. i believe either walters or devries can put up a better season in the bigs than hendricks , deduno is 50 50 depending how many he walks.
-
mike, alot of these guys that will compete for a spot have nothing left to prove in the minors, minor league success does not always translate to the bigs, especially if you dont strike guys out. i personally dont think hendricks can repeat his performance in AAA.
-
#1 diamond his spot until someone takes it from him #2 worley not high on him but he will help #3 pelfrey good sign, could be the #1 if healthy #4 walters if he shows healthy in ST,he will surprise with the + changeup #5 correia he is here because he is under contract, bad sign. #6 blackburn he will get another chance & it may be out of ST. #7 harden if not in pen , when if healthy he can help #8 devries he will get some spot starts #9 gibson some big league time but really wont be a factor till 2014 #10, 11 deduno has the stuff but mgrs arent going to keep sending him out there hoping he can throw strikes, unless they have no other choice. hendricks dont see it happening i know mine dont match most others , but i like walters & i have explained why in other post but really most likely blackburn fills out the rotation to start the season...
-
storm, when i say control i am talking about better quality strikes , not just not walking hitters, i am pretty cofident he can throw strikes but thats the problem , he will make a good pitch then follow it up with one belt high right down the middle, or hang a curve...i was referring to making quality piches in the strike zone & that can be improved. i question his stuff also , but if he can improve his location his stuff will appear better.
-
brock, i am definately not a hater, but sell me on hendricks, what i have seen is a hi 80s Fb with little movement, location average, curve below avg, chnage avg, slider below avg...the only thing i think he can improve on is his location & that will help tremendously & he had off season elbow surgery so he will not have a normal off season to work on things.. all the other pitchers that have been mentioned have atleast 1 plus pitch, blackburn , great sinker when he is right, deduno, nasty movement on all his pitches but can he fix it ??,gibson + FB with sink, walters + change , was rated the best in the cards org for yrs & he showed it when healthy last year..just my opinion you have to have atleast 1 plus pitch to be a consistent starter in the bigs & i simply dont see it with hendricks, hope i am wrong but i just dont think so..
-
niedermann..........finally someone sees it like i do....i have watched hendricks several times & i just dont see it either, as you said no out pitch, not overpowering, curve & change average at best & alot of those strike calls that go your way in AAA dont in the bigs...he is maybe a #5 in the NL or most likely a long man in the pen, no way he is the #5 in minnesota starting the season...as far as him or walters , you can compare there numbers all you want but put hendricks in the PCL for a while & watch those #s balloon.. if its a competition for the #5 spot between hendricks, walters, blackburn, deduno, devries then i think walters & blackburn are the favorites with blackburn having the edge because of the contract & he has been good before...walters was very good before his injury, if he is healthy & gets enough innings in ST it should be a very good competition.

Did Liam Hendriks show you enough??
3up3down replied to greengoblinrulz's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
i am one that thinks mauer is a leader, its just the way i see it, and maybe the way media sees it, you saw it all year with pitchers when things didnt go there way, full of excuses, broken bat singles, bloops, all that stuff & it wasnt just hendricks, after a walters interview , they said finally some accountability, thats just what i like to see. i dont want to see bats thrown or sour faces either.thats not what i meant..hendricks may turn out to be ok, i hope he does, this whole topic asked had he shown enough to have a spot in the rotation, my answer is absolutely not, but he has shown enough to compete for a spot.. -

I never said Walters deserved a roster spot on a MLB team, but you think Hendricks deserves one, c'mon...you bring up Walters #s and injuries, this is the 1st time he has ever missed a start in his carreer and put Hendricks in the PCL & let's revisit his stats..Walters was never given a opportunity with the cardinals , if Hendricks was in the cards org with Larussa as his mgr there isn't a doubt in my mind he would not be on the 40 man right now, he should be thankful he's a twin...some of these guys really got ther first real opportunity this year..some did ok , some not so good & Walters unfortunately got injured. I just said after watching all of them this year of the guys that I think might compete for the #5 spot I liked Walters. -

3up3down replied to greengoblinrulz's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Twinsnorth, I see it just the opposite, I think Hendricks make up(mettle) is not good at all, you can find a lot of the interviews on the web and you see Hendricks happy & carrinig on about how good he pitched & how good it was to shut out a line up like the tigers, while it is good & he should be pleased with his outing , that's not the way to act , your team just lost another game you started, your team has lost over 90 games , it's no time to be laughing in the clubhouse or talking about how good you pitched. He just doesn't get it yet...on the other hand you have a guy like Walters who kills his numbers by trying to pitch hurt, it was reported he was hurting after his complete game, but he started 3 more after that, then when he came back & pitched bad he took it all on himself, even after his last start where he pitched pretty well he was very unsatisfied because his team lost, that's the type guy I want in the clubhouse, those types will make the team better eventually. Just my opinion.. -

3up3down replied to greengoblinrulz's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Did Hendricks show enough for what ? That he is a #5 starter , sure he did.....anything else , definitely no. He should go to spring training & compete with deduno, walters (who I believe is the best option of these) devries,Blackburn for the #5 spot. Hendricks stuff is a #5 pitcher in the AL & that's not gonna change. -
brock, i see wht your saying......but .... perez would have higher walk rates if he was trying to pitch 6,7 innings.......are you telling me you dont think zito could have got thru one inning throwing nothing but his curve.....there are alot of relievers that rely mostly on one pitch to get them thru 1 inning, deduno could do that for 1 inning.. its a complete different situation..deduno is trying to last 6 innings , he cant throw 90% sliders, even though one game i bet he threw atleast 60%.......we will just have to agree to disagree, but i dont see his control getting better........ thrylos, my opinion is you have a bunch of #5 starters, that includes deduno, devries, blackburn, walters, hendrix, they are all #5s & if more than one of those guys is in the rotation next year for a extended time, the twins will not be in the playoff race......one of these guys can help the team in the 5th spot but like some have said if they are 3,4& 5 the twins are in deep trouble.....they need to sign or trade for a #1 #2 diamond can be a #3, sign a cheap #4 & may the best man win the #5 spot, but having more than one of these guys in the rotation is disaster..
-
i have seen deduno alot thru the years, my opinion is & has been is he should be in the pen , where he can throw the curve 15 times & give you 1 good inning, you are correct he has great movement on his pitches but he has & will always struggle with control, thats a good thing & a bad thing....hitters cant sit on pitches because they have no idea where its going...if he tries to change & get less movement & throw more quality strikes he is going to start to get hit harder....the video you showed is a perfect example, the ball was never over the plate , it had alot of movement but it was never a strike, hitters will not swing at that once they get a good look at him..i do believe deduno comes into spring training with a shot , not a lock at the rotation & then its 50/50 if he throws strikes for a month in ST he makes the team if not & he struggles with control he gets designated & maybe gets claimed or goes to rochester..

Gardenhire on Hendriks in the post game last night.
3up3down replied to John Bonnes's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
badsmerf, while there are some good hitters in AAA, there is no lineup in AAA that matches any lineup in the bigs....what i see with hendricks is in AAA he gets most of the close calls or the hitters are swinging, while i dont think he has good stuff , i do think he is deceptive, he throws across his body and he short arms the ball, making it harder to pick up, which should be very difficult for AAA hitters but with big leaguers they see him , then they see lots of video & they are the best hitters in the world, they figure it out.....what hendricks needs to be successful on a consistent basis is 1) a good ump..2) a good called game by his catcher 3) excellent location & change speeds.4) a little luck....i do believe that he can pitch in the bigs as #5 or long reliever, my argument was with the ones on here saying he has the stuff to be a 2 or #3, some even said a poor mans #1...if i remember correctly last year brad mills dominated in vegas & everytime he got promoted he got hammered, everyone said if he can dominate vegas he can pitch in the bigs, sometimes things just go your way, you get all the breaks , they pop up that fastball at the belt , but in the bigs it catches up to you if you dont have the stuff or atleast 1 out pitch....look up mills #s this year... -

yourhouse.......you were evidently watching the game.......while i agree with your comment that in the 1st it should have been a strike him out throw him out......BUT what about the call that he got on the batter before (kipnas) that pitch was clearly a ball & the ump rung him up...the umps miss calls every night & they definately missed some last night , but they missed them both ways, i actually thought hendricks got more calls for him than against....as far as bad luck, every pitcher has to deal with that, yes the swinging bunt with 2 outs cost him a run but the inning started with a double off the wall, it evens out ....hendricks has avg stuff & he has to hit his spots and pitch inside more, & like it or not the ump plays a huge part in his success...i have said before that i am not down on hendricks , i think he can be a #5 or long man, innings eater..but thats about it, the stuff just isnt there... -
hendricks is not rated as high outside the organization as people on here think...pure stuff wise hendricks & devries are at the bottom of this list, the one thing hendricks has going for him above the others is his age & that aint gonna help him get big league hitters out consistently....i am not saying walters & deduno make the rotation next year , i could see them both being taken off the roster & resign to minor league deals, go to spring compete for a 4 or 5 spot & go to rochester if they dont make the team... its really not a big deal to send them down either, if they are pitching good they dont get sent down ,if they are pitching bad & get designated then no one is going to claim them anyway so they go back to rochester..
-
walters will be back, twins need pitching to much to just let someone walk, especially after showing well in his initial call up. as far as stuff wise , walters is a #4 or 5 guy, with better stuff than some might think.. i believe & the opinion of others in the baseball business think walters has a better chance at sticking in the rotation than hendricks, devries or deduno, if he hadnt got injured he would still be in the rotation..just my observation..

i have seen hendricks in AAA several times, there are alot of things that factor in, 1st is he just dont have a out pitch that he can go to consistently to get big league hitters out, his stuff is average at best, nothing is plus..he has had great success in AAA but i really dont think that would continue like it has..the borderline pitches he gets in AAA he dont get in the bigs, they just take those & say do it again, then he has to pitch behind in the count & his average stuff becomes even more hittable, the thing that i find surprising is how many on here say he could be a #2 or 3, liriano had #1 stuff, stuff wise hendricks is not even in the same league as liriano..i am not down on hendricks , i just think he is what he is & thats a #5 or long reliever..
