  1. I'm sure it's happened elsewhere. I think it's great. I think it's fun having baseball people in baseball jobs. I do like that: 1.) Perkins has clearly thought about a role in which there currently isn't a job, but it makes a lot of sense. I can also see him in the PR group, if he wants. 2.) Hunter isn't saying that he should jump right into it. He'd want to learn under Ryan and under the rest of the Twins group to learn that business side of it. Who knows what will come of it, but I enjoy hearing that guys are thinking like that. Listening to the Souhan Unfiltered with Torii, it's clear that he does a lot of research, a lot of thinking, and he is very smart and intrigued by his future.
  2. Jim Souhan's podcast (Souhan Unfiltered) this week came live from Ft. Myers. Two separate shows, one with Torii Hunter and one with Eddie Guardado. Both shows get the Explicit label, though there's nothing bad in the Hunter story, but the stories are remarkable. The Guardado ones (for the record) definitely, DEFINITELY deserved the Explicit label. I enjoyed listening to the stories from each. Torii talking about borrowing from Kirby Puckett's "petty cash" fund in his locker, and the father-figure he became for Hunter. Hunter and Souhan talk about some of the funniest baseball stories, teammate stuff, with Koskie, Eddie, Jacque, Molitor, Detroit Lakes and so much more. Just hilarious! Take a few minutes and listen to these shows. Very entertaining!
  3. Jim Souhan wrote a very nice article on new Twins bullpen coach Eddie Guardado. He obviously was not the most talented pitcher. He rarely topped 90 mph when he became an All Star closer, but he was gritty. When the Twins, specifically Terry Ryan, told him that the team didn't have enough money to bring him back after the 2003 season, he signed with the Mariners and there was a grudge for awhile. When Ryan retired in 2007, he received a phone message from Guardado, basically telling him that he is great at his job, and now he understands. Ryan responded that it was one of the classiest calls he's received. Guardado is a character, almost unable to complete a radio interview without saying something that might make the FCC cringe. But he should certainly make the Twins bullpen interesting.
  4. USA Today's Bob Nightengale chatted with Torii Hunter about several interesting topics: The two discussed the Josh Hamilton situation. Hunter is aware of what can happen because his father has fought and relapsed from drug issues for many, many years, including very recently. The two discussed Hunter's decision to come back to Minnesota despite other good offers, from Texas and from Kansas City. He also talked about what he might like to do following his playing career: Very interesting stuff.
  5. I think I disagree with both of you. I don't think Hicks had any bad behavior. I also don't think it was bad coaching or bad behavior from the coaches. What I do think is that baseball is a really, really hard game, and playing baseball in the Major Leagues is incredibly hard. I believe in Aaron Hicks. I think he's a good kid, and he works and he wants to be good. I believe he can be, but if he's not, it won't be because he didn't try or he wasn't coached well or right. Baseball is really hard!
  6. I can see the video now... Interesting thought. Hey, let's try to keep it to the prospect list, please? Aaron put a lot of time and research into his list, and obviously has good prospect contacts on the national level who have been doing this stuff for a long time. I will be interested, when Aaron's list is complete, to see how it compares to the TD list, or my personal list, or Jeremy's, Cody's, BA's, BP's, Sickels' and more.
  7. Pioneer Press's Mike Berardino chatted with Twins legend Tony Oliva about Minnie Minoso. This article includes some great video as well. My favorite part of the video was " There is so much great information about the history of baseball in this article. In 1993 and 2003, Minoso came to St. Paul and actually got plate appearances for the St. Paul Saints, thanks to Mike Veeck. Mike's father Bill owned the White Sox and helped Minoso play in five decades of MLB. Mike had him come and play with the Saints so that they can say he played in seven decades of professional baseball. Minnie Minoso passed away early on Sunday. Most believe that he was between 89 and 92 years old.
  8. Fox Sports North's Tyler Mason wrote an article on Phil Hughes and how he hopes that he can take his success from 2014 and build on it in 2015 and beyond. Very well done story. It's interesting to read about his new batting practice glove and it's ties to another Minnesota professional team. Learn what even made him decide to go ahead with his contract extension.
  9. 1500 ESPN's Judd Zulgad wrote about the lessons learned by Aaron Hicks. It's very interesting, reading about the time (weeks) that he spent not being a switch-hitter. He called it "scary," and he wasn't very successful in the short term. He wrote about his stint in Venezuela, and of course, having Torii Hunter and what his leadership can mean for him.
  10. The AP's Dave Campbell wrote a terrific article on Twins pitcher Mark Hamburger. In it, he writes about pitching in the Twins system, getting traded to the Rangers and pitching in the big leagues. But then it also talks about how he entered himself into Hazelden for substance abuse. More important, it talks about how he has come back from it. The article points out that he was hitting 98 mph last season in the minor leagues. He is hoping to make the Twins roster. If he does and works out of the bullpen, the Twins bullpen coach is Eddie Guaradado, who he was traded to Texas in exchange for.
  11. Oh. I guess I didn't read that the Twins had promised him anything. And, I guess maybe you're right, that no player could possibly be qualified.
  12. David Dorsey of the News Press wrote an article on some of the differences between the between the clubhouse cultures of the Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox. Both are in Ft. Myers. The Twins have a culture of mentoring and "paying it forward" as Torii Hunter said, whereas the Twins almost separate their starters from their minor leaguers. Obviously there is no right answer, though I certainly know which I would prefer.
  13. Regarding the playoffs, the A's thought enough of him a couple of years ago to give him a start in the playoffs. Last year, he wasn't because the A's went out and got other starters. I'm more intrigued by May and Meyer, but Milone has certainly done enough in his career to get a strong shot at it.
  14. I haven't talked to Kepler since spring training last year, but even then, he was as big as Mauer, maybe a couple inches shorter, but a little bit bigger. I'm sure he's bigger now.
  15. very outside.
  16. Jim Souhan wrote an article on Glen Perkins' post-playing career. He would like a front-office job with the Twins, and I think it makes a ton of sense. I think this is an interesting, and may be an important role at some point. I completely agree with that. I don't think players need to know the advanced stats, or at least they don't need to care about them and digging into them. But if someone can be there to help them understand them, it could be helpful.
  17. Rhett Bollinger had a similar story on Mauer's ability to work out more this offseason. Here's a link to his article that includes video.
  18. Mike Berardino talked to Byron Buxton about fellow 2012 1st-round draft pick Jose Berrios after Buxton faced Berrios in live batting practice today (first day of full-team workouts). There is also video of a few of Berrios's pitches. Buxton speaks very highly of Berrios.
  19. Twins official photographer Brace Hemmelgarn just posted several pictures on his site from the first day of full team workouts at spring training. There are a lot of great pictures in here, from angles the average fan can not get to. He's got all access!
  20. FSN's Tyler Mason made his way to Ft. Myers and today wrote an article on Joe Mauer having a healthy offseason this year. Obviously, he is hoping to have a better season in 2015 than he did a year ago. Last offseason, he was unable to work out much because of his concussion. Molitor had comments on Mauer's approach and how much he can help the star.
  21. I go back and forth on it. I don't have a problem with asking players to stay off of social media before and/or after the game for a half-hour or whatever. I'm not as comfortable with saying no cell phones, period. I understand the thought though, build team. I'm not one who thinks that a player should be solely focused on baseball for a certain amount of time before or after a game.
  22. Derek Wetmore wrote about Tommy Milone and his confidence that he will make the starting rotation... if he gets back to being "the pitcher they traded for." When healthy, he has been a legitimate, solid big league starter. Health is a part of the question. When he came to the Twins a year ago, he wasn't himself. He went on the DL. Later, doctors found, and later removed, a tumor. Milone is certainly a Twins fifth starter candidate and is competing with Mike Pelfrey, Trevor May, Alex Meyer and maybe others for one spot in the Twins rotation.
  23. Derek Wetmore wrote an article on what is important in a pitching coach. He chatted with several pitchers about what is important to them in a pitching coach. The four thoughts were: Communication Understanding of Mechanics Knowledge that every pitcher is different. The mental part of the game. There are 4-6 quotes on each topic. This is a tremendous article. What are your thoughts? What would you add to his list?
  24. Pioneer Press's Mike Berardino wrote about Paul Molitor's policy regarding usage of cell phones in the clubhouse on game days. Eddie Guardado is quoted frequently regarding the atmosphere in the locker room. Honestly, it's only the 1/2 hour before games. I don't think that's too much to ask. What say you?
  25. Ray Smith and Jeff Reed are very good coaches at Elizabethton too.
