  1. Shields has a reasonable option that will be picked up if not extended. Others will be extended and taken off the market as well.
  2. I would personally argue that is poor risk management. Realistically the Twins can sign one Greinke-like guy in free agency. Why make that decision and take on that risk two years before you have to? If he gets hurt or starts to decline you have already blown your free agent wad and you will have a lesser pitcher to supplement the roster at that point.
  3. So people would support 6/120 for Sanchez or 8/200 for Greinke? Otherwise you are raging against a fantasy. I think those contractswith would be a mistake. The rest of the FA class was pretty weak. After all the debate this is still the point that can't be repeated enough.
  4. They traded Ramos for Capps. What more do you want?
  5. This is becoming my fear as well - it is becoming a three person draft.
  6. Since there was a grand total of one of those available last offseason in free agency that can be a little tricky when the other 29 teams, including those with much higher revenues, want the same thing. The alternative was to gut the farm system to get Shields. I hope you aren't advocating that. And as a final note I think that is what Ryan was trying to do with the Span trade.
  7. I tend to think he didn't want to get locked into bad contracts and wanted to play younger guys. This is of course the crux of the debate.
  8. No argument here.
  9. Regarding payroll I believe the evidence shows Terry Ryan is closer to the target set by revenue much more often than not. I trust they will get back there in the next 2-3 years once the roster is turned over appropriately. I also find the suggestion that Ryan cares about anything ahead of winning to be hilarious. He has said payroll is not a concern. I see no reason to doubt him.
  10. On FAs I would also argue there were very limited options this offseason to begin with. Outside of SS and perhaps a one year stopgap for CF there wasn't much need for position players. FAs that fit that profile didn't really exist. For pitching hard to quibble too much with the current state of the bullpen. For starters they did sign two guys. They tried to sign more and were rebuffed for reasons that seemed to go beyond money. I think the suggestion they realistically had a shot at Sanchez or Greinke was fantasy unless they overpaid on a massive scale. I appreciate the frustration with the lack of free agents but I think it is more raging at a hypothetical rather than a realistic alternative.
  11. It just doesn't work this way. They will pick the player they want - almost certainly the top prospect on their board.
  12. He is a polished college arm lighting up Hi A, which is what he probably should be doing. From scouting reports I think there is reason to question whether he has enough fastball to succeed in the bigs.
  13. I'm thinking Worley, Diamond, Duensing, Plouffe, Parmelee, Swarzak could all hit arby in the next 2-3 years, at the time some of the guys are coming off the books. No studs but not nothing. I wasn't trying to be disingenuous, I was just brainstorming some areas where payroll will come from in the next couple of years. But you are right, the safer assumption is that the team will probably spend no money ever again.
  14. I agreed with your point and then added some extra thoughts.
  15. I agree with this. I expect the payroll to be lower next year than this year. I don't think it will necessarily be a bad thing either. Just because some guys are coming off the books in the next couple of years I don't think it is a foregone conclusion the payroll will keep going down. The Twins are well positioned to take on salary via trade or perhaps through a couple of Willingham type signings in the future. Plus some guys are going to start hitting arby.
  16. The Twins had enough payroll flexibility to do 4 $18 mil a year contracts this offseason?
  17. I'm pretty sure they set payroll based upon projected revenues. I also would say with good confidence that they realize they are below 50-52% of total revenues with the current payroll. They have said as much.
  18. You feel there has been a lack of media and/or fan outrage the past two seasons? I would respectfully disagree. Maybe apathy.
  19. This is definitely true. I admit I am naive but I do believe the team when push the payroll past the revenue percentages when they are good and have players worth paying. I don't think this past offseason was the time and I especially think Greinke and Sanchez were unrealistic and would have ultimately would have done more damage than good in the long run if the Twins had paid what was required to sign them. They could have spent more on some stop gap guys but they were unsuccessful. I think it is for reasons other than merely being cheap.
  20. I'm naive enough to believe they had targeted a few other guys that they failed to get for barious reasons beyond just money. I personally think their moves this offseason were pretty much in line with what they should do to maintain long term viability while putting a respectable product on the field in the interim. I guess we look at trying differently.
  21. So I disagree with you and that means I suffer from Stockholm Syndrome? Brilliant!
  22. Are people surprised a business wants to make profit? And do they think building Target Field would guarantee success every year?
  23. I actually expect payroll to be even lower next year. I agree that the Pohlads will not subsidize a losing team iut of their bank account. Why should they? I do think they will stretch in the right situation but they aren't there at the moment.
  24. Mike, regarding your point about the stadium the Twins have pumped more of their money into it this offseason, something like $15-20 mil in improvements. I think this had something to do with the fact not as much was spent on payroll this year.
  25. Sanchez signes for 5/90 or 18 per. And what makes people think either Sanchez or Greinke would have signed here last offseason considering the state of the team? It would have taken a massive (and irresponsible) overpay.
