  1. Deolis Guerra signed with Pittsburgh. He shall now become a lights-out reliever or deliver 15-20 starts of amazing performance, as does every former Twin in Pittsburgh.
  2. It's also absolutely best used for comparative analysis, not individual evaluation. Saying Brian Dozier had a 3-WAR season means very little, but saying Dozier had the best WAR season of any AL 2B is a valid single-season use of the statistic.
  3. I don't think Santana/Vargas/Gibson are exactly highly valued assets around the league, either.
  4. The Heyward trade required a highly-valued asset with major league experience, though. I'm not sure the Twins have those that they're willing to move.
  5. I'd be very surprised if it "only" took $130M to keep Jason Heyward on an extension.
  6. LOL! It's far from perfect, but it's the best thing out there so far. I tend to utilize the three major WAR values out there as a scope because they each utilize different things for defense.
  7. I would argue that the stat itself is far less dubious than many claim, but its understanding by many who utilize it is very poor. OPS was/is the same thing as many utilize the stat without context of era, ballpark, etc. WAR is rarely used properly, and if it was, it'd be seen as a good comparative tool, not a valuing tool as many have utilized it for.
  8. Upton is owed $14.5M in 2015. Medlen is most likely gone or signing a very heavily-incentivized one-year deal after his second Tommy John. Johnson is strongly being shopped. There is intentional movement of money as part of this deal. They're meeting with Lester this week and offered 8 years last offseason to Heyward, so I highly doubt it's about contract length.
  9. Total savings were roughly $12M with Walden's expected $4M-ish
  10. They do? I think the Braves would be surprised to learn they need a RF
  11. Miller also posted a ~2.10 ERA in the second half last season. He had a very poor first half, but he came around, and he was still better than the pitcher he's replacing, Ervin Santana. Jenkins' strikeouts were down a bunch this year, but his control was much improved, and his stuff received reviews comping him to Brandon Webb with more velocity with his sinking action along with a sharp breaking curve. Plus, add that repertoire to the Braves infield with Simmons/Peraza up the middle, and you really could see great production. That's one thing that is missed in the minors by those who only review stats - a heavy sinkerballer will usually have one or two major league caliber middle infielders behind him the entire way up the system, which is why a lot of them "surprise" once they get to the majors and have adequate defense behind them.
  12. The offseason lists from last year would be pretty poor as Jenkins had a trainwreck 2013. He's rebuilt a lot of that value, though the statlines don't pop, so he probably won't be high on overall lists, but as far as pitchers and what they bring to the table, absolutely Jenkins and Stewart are similar pitchers with top of the rotation stuff and just needing to show they can harness at a higher level.
  13. You're underselling Jenkins, but also misinterpreting what I stated. I stated that they have similar upside, but Jenkins is closer to the majors. Simply because Stewart hasn't really failed, he'll sit higher on current lists, but Jenkins has rebuilt a ton of value in the last year.
  14. You're assuming BJ Upton even plays for the Braves in 2015.
  15. I'll hold judgement. I don't like it, but Miller/Jenkins for Heyward is a pretty solid package, and it sounds like other than the Cubs, there weren't any players in the Heyward market (and the Cubs were only offering a package of prospects, no one major league ready). He might have done as well as he could have. Once again, he played Kenny Lofton and a reliever into David Justice and Marquis Grissom, and as a Braves fan, I thought they picked up a piece that would put them over the edge for the next 5 years while moving one who wanted way more contract than the Braves could afford. They then went until Heyward trying to find a guy who could be half the player Justice was in right field. Hart may have pulled off something similar. If Roger McDowell can get a good season out of Aaron Harang, imagine what he could do with Shelby Miller
  16. They already replaced him defensively, and Cervelli has had some level of success with the stick, plus they have a group of very good young catchers who could be ready as soon as mid-2015.
  17. Medlen and Beachy both had their second TJ surgeries last year and are both arby-eligible, which means one or both will likely be gone. There is a plethora of very good arms coming, but they're 2016 arms at best bet.
  18. The Braves' best minor league pitching isn't exactly MLB ready. Their offense is deep, but it drastically underperformed last season. They were one of the best offenses in baseball the previous season with basically the same team. They add Christian Bethancourt at catcher, who could be a top 3-5 defensive catcher in the game immediately with some stick as well, and they can play Evan Gattis for 500+ plate appearances in the outfield, adding significant offense.
  19. Santana won't return. He wants multiple years, and the Braves won't go there.
  20. I live in South Dakota, but I follow the team very strongly as part of my writing job, and I haven't seen anything but that "remake" interview by Hart that would be anyone directly associated with the team discussing anything that would indicate rebuilding. They want to retool their team around defense (and with Bethancourt/Peraza/Simmons up the middle, you can't blame them) and pitching instead of the Earl Weaver offense they built last year.
  21. No way that deal does it. Jenkins is a top 100 guy who is a former first rounder. In value, Jenkins could be akin to Stewart because Jenkins is closer to the majors, but has similar upside to Stewart. And Gibson to Shelby Miller isn't even close. I'm not a fan of this deal, but it would have likely taken Meyer/Stewart or something similar as the Twins simply don't have a guy with Miller's background and years of control.
  22. Miller does have #2 type of upside, and I will say that having a 1-4 of Teheran, Wood, Minor, and Miller is very solid and cheap, and moving Gattis to the outfield and Justin Upton to right field could be a huge boon to the offense, but I still am not a fan of the deal.
  23. No, I'm talking about on Braves sites and on Twitter. That's where the Miller for Heyward rumors were all over this weekend. I figured there'd be more with Miller to pull off Heyward, but Walden is a throw in that the Braves were wanting to dump for virtually anything they could get.
  24. I haven't heard anything about rebuilding from anyone but pundits who want to speculate. The rebuilding stuff came strongly from a quote from Hart saying that they were willing to listen on anyone in trade in order to remake the team.
  25. They were shopping Walden hard and just acquired someone (along with a good collection of arms in the minors) to take his place, so he's basically a throw-in to dump his arb-eligible salary.
