  1. At the risk of taking this thread into an entirely different hot-button issue, why do you think they will regret losing Slama? I know he has had great minor league numbers, but he was mostly ineffective in the two major league stints he had, and he did absolutely nothing this spring to show it would be any different the next time. If I had to choose which was the most likely scenario between A) Slama becomes a free agent, goes somewhere else, and becomes a staple of a major league bullpen, and Slama becomes a free agent, goes somewhere else, and never successfully makes the transition to the big leagues and ends his career as a (very successful) minor league pitcher, I'd have to put my money on B.
  2. I presume your point is that, with Butera available, Gardenhire would feel comfortable putting both Doumit and Mauer in the game and not have to keep one on the bench in reserve in case the other goes down (and thus lose the DH for the balance of that game). Thus, while Butera's bat is a liability, having both Mauer and Doumit in the lineup compensates for that, and Butera is probably a better defensive catcher that Mauer and Doumit (I know some dispute that) so it would add defensively too. Is that what you were getting at?
  3. Saw this on CBS Sports website - nice to know every once in a while it works out! Lefty Scott Rice wins job in Mets' bullpen after 14 years in the minors - CBSSports.com
  4. I think most (admittedly not all) who are advocating for a change are not doing so because they think he can't manage - they think he can no longer manage here, for whatever reason (getting stale, needing fresh ideas, need to send a message after two bad seasons, players not responding, etc.) I'm one of those who think Ryan has handled Gardenhire appropriately over the offseason. His track record calls for him to get to manage another year here (although I am a bit troubled by his post-season record), but if we don't see some signs of hope for the future this year it will be time to reevaluate that in October.
  5. So what are you saying - that the Pohlad's have a moral obligation to lose money for the amusement of the fans? I don't understand this idea some have that there should be a correlation between how rich the owner is and how big the payroll should be. For me it's a question of revenue and expenses. You add together combined revenue from all sources (ticket sales, TV money, merchandising, etc), subtract expenses, and come up with a net income or loss. You also allow for a reasonable profit (baseball is, after all, a business, not a charity). Then, and only then, you can talk about whether the amount spent on payroll is appropriate and whether ownership is doing right by the team and the fans.
  6. And risk getting banned by the moderator?
  7. If I was specifically responding to you, I would have quoted you like I do here. Relax! Enjoy life!
  8. I wasn't referring specifically to you - yours just happened to be the last post when I got back tonight and revisited the thread. I just still get surprised at the amount of passion people have about Butera, one way or another. It's is if he's a lightning rod that draws attention. Personally I don't think his presence on the roster (25-man or 40-man) or otherwise deserve the amount of space it often gets in these forums. Just my opinion.
  9. Why are you even asking? Butera. No matter who goes down first. (Sorry, couldn't resist!)
  10. Wow! I should have known when I started this thread that it would turn into a "flame Butera" thread. My bad.
  11. People returning from the DL may indeed send Robertson to Rochester, but, given their track record, what are the odds that the staff stays healthy:)?
  12. To get this thread back to who hits second, the Twins posted their projected starting lineup for Monday's opener on their website. Mauer batting 3rd, folks, with Dozier 2nd.
  13. I concur; there does seem to be a double standard based on whether we think an acquisition is a good one or not. If good performances are ignored, using the argument it is only ST, than we should be ignoring the bad ones as well. If we want to gripe and moan about a bad ST performance, than we should be just as willing to compliment a good one.
  14. That may be, but it appears he's going to be there opening day, unless the Twins bring somebody back into camp that they sent down earlier this spring.
  15. According to the Twins website, Tim Wood has been moved to the 15-day DL, and both Rafael Perez and Rich Harden have been moved to the minor league camp. That basically sets the 25-man roster, with Wilkin Ramirez making the club. The only question left is what roster move they make on the 40-man roster to make room for Ramirez. Do they get rid of one of the veterans (Burnett, Butera) or one of the minor leaguers (Hernandez, Thielbar, Pinto)? Thoughts?
  16. And if you're there for the ambience and the total game experience, including the stuff between innings, then that should be OK too, and there should be nothing wrong with the franchise paying attention to that as well as the product on the field. I do apologize if I have unfairly characterized someone's position here, but I have noticed this before (and wrote about it in my blog) that there does tend to be some elitism from some die-hard fans and serious students of the game that minimizes and even somewhat disdains the entertainment aspect of professional baseball. I've seen that in these forums and at the ballpark. 'Nuff said - I'm moving on to another topic.
  17. I think this thread gets us to an issue that we have to always remember. Baseball is not played for it's own sake - it is a game, and professional baseball played before spectators is entertainment. If there are things that go on in between innings (when there is a pause in the game anyway), where is the harm in that? If that can help increase the entertainment value, why not? When I toured the Twins farm system last year, I did it to watch the games, but I also found it interesting to see what each team did to enhance it's game-day experience, particularly for those who are casual fans and do not wish (nor should they be expected to wish) to learn to watch the game with the eye of those who have played it or studied it intensely.
  18. So, are you saying that only those who can fully appreciate what is happening on the field should attend baseball games? If so, I have to respectfully disagree. Using classical music as an analogy, I have no formal musical training, and when I go to a classical concert I am no doubt missing 80% of what is going on in the music. But does that mean I shouldn't attend? I still enjoy listening to the music and find the experience enriching.
  19. In Rochester, as to be expected after his spring training numbers.
  20. I think that's a key distinction, and I tend to be the same way as you - when I go to a game, I want to watch the game. That being said, I recognize that the job of the Twins is to cater to all types of fans, even the casual fans for whom the game-day experience (including all the fluff) is as important as the game on the field (which is often the case for families with children). I remember attending a game in Rochester last summer, and the family sitting next to me had two small kids. They lasted until about the 4th inning, then they went (with mom) over to the play area on the grass berm next to right field. The dad stayed behind and watched the game; the kids came back in the eighth inning with huge smiles on their faces. They had a good day at the ballpark, even if they didn't know who won the game.
  21. If the theme of the season is to see what our youngsters can do, why would we platoon Parmelee? Don't we need to see if he can handle playing every day, against both lefties and righties? He's going to be our replacement for Morneau at 1st (assuming Morneau is traded or not re-signed); let's find out now if he can handle it. They tried to platoon him last year, and that didn't work out well.
  22. I'm having difficulty seeing Ramirez make the team - you just don't need five outfielders. I think they'll use the 13th batter spot on a third catcher, and I'm guessing they'll go with 6 infielders, as Florimon/Escobar/Dozier/Carroll will all trade off and see time in the middle infield (especially if they are going to intentionally limit Carroll's plate appearances as some are suggesting).
  23. Hey, that's one of my favorite parts of the Rudolph TV classic! All of those toys found homes where they could be loved and appreciated. And let's be honest - who hasn't been a misfit at some point in their lives?
  24. I wasn't expecting that. Who then gets left out to make room? Assuming 13 batters, you've got Hicks, Mastroianni, Parmelee, Willingham in the outfield, Carroll, Dozier, Escobar, Florimon, Morneau, Plouffe in the infield, Doumit, Mauer catching. If Escobar can catch then they can leave Butera off, but if not, will Gardy go without an emergency catcher?
  25. With Deduno's injury, it looks likely that no non-roster invitees will make the club this year. I know that Sean Burroughs made it last year, but he fizzled early in the season. I can't remember if anybody else made the club as a NRI (was Dozier on the 40-man then?) Has anybody run any numbers on this? On average how many NRI players make a big league roster - for the Twins, for the league, etc? Have there been any names of people who became solid starters after making the club as a NRI?
