  1. Mechanics is one thing. Approach at the plate is another. The hitting coach is in charge of the first one. The second one is from the organization, like "hitting the opposite way" with the Twins, which can be enforced by the field manager.
  2. I think a hitting coach is there to offer suggestions and give feedback to the player, to create the schedule for the batting cage, to take stats and guard the Dubble Bubble bucket during games, and to get fired when the team needs a jolt.
  3. Hardy has credited Vavra with helping him regain his form.
  4. Dillon Gee was with the Twins?
  5. After Wednesday's (3/21/12) game, Delmon Young is now batting .472 with 5 HRs and 19 RBI. Delmon has changed his batting stance at the encouragement of Detroit hitting coach Lloyd McClendon. From the Detroit Free Press: "Young has resumed using his old stance. It's one in which he stands more upright, with his hands higher, than in the stance he said he adopted in 2009 at the suggestion of the Twins. After the Tigers acquired Young from the Twins in August, hitting coach Lloyd McClendon encouraged him to return to his old stance if he felt comfortable with it. 'You're not going to change your stance during a pennant race,' Young said. The off-season -- in which he worked with former major league hitting coach Jeff Pentland -- gave him time to switch back to the old stance."
  6. The Twins starting middle infield come August will be Dozier and Nishioka.
  7. Yes. It encourages players to take lower percentage shots, it's dull, and the line isn't far enough out to warrant the extra point.
  8. Calvin Griffith. The only one with a son who exposed himself to a law student. And the only Canadian.
  9. The problem with Morneau being the everyday DH is that Joe Mauer will have no place in the lineup when he doesn't catch. Would you not let Morneau start at 1B but then ask him to play there when Mauer needs a break, which will be often? I also think this is the reason why the Twins have never gone out to get a full-time DH.
  10. Derek Christensen - something doesn't add up here. He's young, he has good numbers. Why not try to trade him? Did the kid ask for his release?
  11. Baseball managers, coaches, and executives with vastly more baseball knowledge and experience than I will ever accumulate get fired all the time.
  12. It's 2010 and Danny Valencia all over again. Is Dozier really "too good to be a utility infielder" or did they spend too much on Jamie Carroll for him to be the utility guy? In 2010, it was more important to find a starting job for Nick Punto to justify his $4M contract than to go with Valencia at 3B out of spring training.
  13. Throw in the fact that Gardenhire lobbied hard to have Dozier called up last season.
  14. Carl Pohlad. Only member to win a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
  15. I'd go with the two youngest guys on your list. The conventional wisdom seems to be that Dozier won't make the roster as a utility player because he needs to play everday in order to learn. I would hope the Twins pick a utility player that is ready to play at the major league level right now. He doesn't have to be the finished product, of course, but at least competent defensively. So, either Dozier is ready or he isn't. If he's ready right now, whether he starts or sits on the bench should depend on the other infield options on the 25-man roster.
