  1. Almost. Buy taking Leach early and Enlow in the third, if they don't sign Enlow, they lose a lot less money from their pool. It was a dollar mitigation move, that's it.
  2. Sweet. I feel better already today.
  3. All names Twins should like. I want Enlow in the next 15 minutes...
  4. I think he's a stud hitter. Hope he goes to Fort Myers, but he shouldn't be anywhere near the Rookie Leagues to start his pro career.
  5. Who is this "Weatherly" guy everyone keeps mentioning?! ;-) (Heatherly I'd be fine with too if he's the one they think they can sign, but it would be awesome if your second sentence came true!)
  6. I'm not so sure. I'd venture they've banked at least $1.5MIL already and plenty of teams punt a pick or two (or more) in rounds 5-10 to put that money at the top. Twins have $1.34MIL at those picks, of which I think they could easily pull another few hundred-K from. They can also go over their total pool by about 700K with only the tax penalty. They'll have the money if they want it.
  7. Do we have good information that Enlow is unsignable?
  8. This sequence from MLB.com's article on top remaining talent gives me some hope: "Whether any of this high school talent gets taken on Day 2 remains to be seen. A year ago, five of the top 10 players available after Day 1 were high schoolers. All five were drafted, with Cole Stobbe, Thomas Jones and Nonie Williams signing with the Phillies, Marlins and Angels, respectively. All three were taken in the third round, so pay close attention to the opening round today. The two other prepsters, Drew Mendoza and Jared Horn, went on Day 3, but went on to begin their college careers. Overall, if any of the remaining players are selected today, look for them to start their pro careers. In 2016, all but two players taken in the top 10 rounds signed, a trend that should continue. Teams carefully plot out their Draft bonus pools, so it's become less likely for them to miss on a pick through the top 10 rounds. If a player taken at any point in the top 10 rounds doesn't sign, the team loses the value assigned to the pick from its total bonus pool, which could hamper the ability to sign other picks. The top two players certainly should be of interest. Both right-hander Blayne Enlow and shortstop Nick Allen were players some thought could land in the back end of the first round, with Allen in particular showing up at the bottom of many late mock drafts. Enlow is committed to LSU and Allen has a Southern Cal commitment, and it should be an interesting storyline to see if that comes into play. If they don't go on today, there's a very good chance that pair will head on to school."
  9. Well, they don't go so far as to say he's unsignable, which I have seen plenty times before on other guys (some who ended up signing, too), but that does temper that a bit. $3MIL (my projected number) is still top 20 money... I hope they could get him. If not, I think they took a risk that failed at the top end of this draft - but that doesn't mean it won't work out. Initial reactions to an MLB draft often end up getting turned on their head. I hope that's the case.
  10. I haven't been much of a believer in Jorge in the past, but he has been fantastic this season. Still would like to see a higher K-rate, but is looking like the next control artist type for Twins.
  11. That could be true. Have you read that's his preference anywhere? (I've been looking but haven't seen that, usually that is well known)
  12. He was rated a lot higher than Leach... Had a LOT of helium in that draft and was considered one of the most projectable arms. Toronto picked him early enough to get him out of his college commitment.
  13. I think they should have the $ to get Enlow to sign. Lewis is around $1MIL under per Doogie. Rooker might save some $, Leach should be under-slot (if he's not I have a big mark against Falvey and Levine in their first draft). I'd bet they have around $3MIL to throw at him.
  14. Best curveball spin rate out of high school is still available today: Blayne Enlow.
  15. My initial reaction is option number 2 above. The player they wanted to fall didn't, so they ended up getting burned. I like the Rooker pick, but Leach was a reach, and a pretty big one at that. I would hope they're targeting Blayne Enlow to start the picks today.
  16. Would definitely be HS pitchers. Shane Baz is the (pipe)dream, but there has been smoke on him. MN guy Carlson is probably next on the list you'd want that for but not that likely, either. There will be guys that fall. They can shoot for the guy they want, but that will be fluid as the picks roll in.
  17. There is that risk, but it comes down to the Twins having the biggest pool to play with. As soon as I have my $$$ amount agreed at #1 I'm calling the guy I want to fall and telling him I will pay you $XXX amount at #35. That means every talk they have with another team has to meet that number from there on out. Lets say the Twins offer them $4MIL at #35. That's pick #12 money. In this case that team is the Pirates. They have just over $10MIL. If that player starts falling into the 15-20 range, then we're talking teams with a pool of only $8MIL or less. You think those teams are gonna pony up that price and blow half their budget in round 1? Remember, they LOSE that pool money if they don't sign the player.
  18. If they save a bunch of money at #1 (lets say, $1.5MIL, or about how much it goes down to for the #4 pick), if you add what you've banked onto the slot for #35 you have as much money as the slot for pick #15.
  19. Maybe I'm thinking of Max Fried for Allard, but Garrett's news just came out last week: http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/mlb/miami-marlins/article154970919.html
  20. DA 3:27 Any chance Minnesota goes Lewis #1 and uses extra money on Shane Baz at #35? Keith Law 3:28 I don't think so.
  21. Last three are all casualties to Tommy John already in their careers.
  22. Lot of steam on McKay... I could get behind him as a two-way guy but would also hope he's saving them money if that's their choice. I'd really like to see how Falvey and Levine rate him in comparison to say, Stephen Gonsalves. They sound pretty similar to me. Gonsalves on MLB.com: Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curve: 50 | Slider: 40 | Changeup: 60 | Control: 50 | Overall: 55 "Gonsalves reached Double-A for the first time in 2016 and continued to baffle hitters, finishing among the Minor League's best in ERA and batting average against. He does so with a low-90s fastball coming from his 6-foot-5 frame that might still have a little more velocity to come. His changeup is his best secondary offering, an excellent sinking offspeed pitch. His curve continues to get better as he throws it more, and he still tinkers with a slider." McKay on MLB.com: Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 60 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 55 | Overall: 6 "McKay usually opens games on the mound by working with a 90-94 mph fastball that loses a couple ticks of velocity by the middle innings. He could add more velo and maintain it better if he focused on pitching full-time, and his fastball command is so good that his heater is effective in the upper 80s. McKay's curveball is a consistent plus pitch and he's working on refining a changeup that he hasn't needed much to this point in his career."
  23. It's mainly the leg kick, but I think he repeats it really well. Have read a lot of reports that say that, and in that video you can also get a good idea of of it too. Lands his foot the same spot, leg kick goes to same spot... I don't think it's a huge concern at this point, like anybody else he's going to get a lot of coaching wherever he lands.
  24. I do too. If Greene had a hammer I don't think there would be any question, but usually a top pick has one, or incredible confidence from scouts that they see one. I haven't been convinced Greene meets either of those conditions. Well, in a guy like Gore or Greene's case, how much are they going to improve their draft stock by going to college? Frankly, it can only get worse. So there is a risk of losing a lot of money as well.
