    MLBTraderumors had a note the other day that four teams, the Cardinals among them, have enquired about Perkins and have been rebuffed (see mlbtraderumors.com/2013/07/bowdens-latest-garza-rox-rios-morneau-perkins.html - 5th bullet point down). If the Twins could liberate Kolten Wong from the Cardinals for Perkins, straight up, that's the one to grab. Wong was an "untouchable" earlier this year. He's major league-ready, but he's stuck in Memphis - blocked by Matt Carpenter. Should the Cards decide that Carpenter is their guy, and with his batting line it's hard to say he's not, Wong may be on the block. I had a chance to see him many times while he was here, and I've never seen anyone better on the Rainbows or their opponents. He would finally be that 2nd baseman.

    Can anyone tell me why the Twins haven't signed Jon Rauch? I think I was off-island most of 2010, so I don't know if he was for real, clubhouse poison, a general pain-in-the-'okole or what. From the looks of things, the Twins had him close for 21 games, made a terrible trade for Matt Capps, and let Rauch just walk away. His contracts since have been $3.5 mil., his numbers haven't been either very good or very bad (eh, he pitched for the Mets last year and seems to have survived) and I've seen no indication of who the Twins think will be their closer in 2013. Yeah, he's 34, but he's relatively inexpensive and was, statistically at least, a good closer. It looks like a no-brainer, but then the Powers That Be haven't been exhibiting any brains. I don't get why the Padres let him walk either, so there may be more to this than I know about. What's the story here? One further question. Johann Santana is someone the Mets seem to want off their payroll, although they'll probably wind up eating a substantial part of his salary. Duhhh? Owl (Pueo)

    Umm, guys, best hope? Not. Hear tell the Mets kinda looking to move Johan Santana and are willing to eat some of the $25 mil/yr contract he has in 2013 (2014 is an option year). Yeah, he's older - he turns 34 on 13 March, hardly OTH (if only I were that young again!). Sure, he got injured a couple times during his NY tenure (with his lack of run support, it's a wonder he didn't have a nervous breakdown), missed 2011 with TJS, and had a losing record last year -- for the Mets (like, who didn't?). Dude threw 199 innings in 2010, 117 last year despite it all, and seemed +/- his old self again. So who are the Twins willing to trade to get braddah Johan back with a goodly part of his salary left back in NY? Willingham, Plouffe, Rivera, Morneau and a percentage on beer concessions at Target Field? Or perhaps it wouldn't eat into the roster that much - remember the Mets are "rebuilding." How about a hot high class A pitcher who was the 23rd pick in the 2011 Amateur Draft and would best ripen on the farm 'til 2015? It could also save face, 'cause from out here the Twins look like they wen' got took by the Nats, again. Just a thought from a distance - perhaps my perspective is skewed by the 90 degrees and 95% humidity. P.S. Would the owners please trade Sir Ryan and whatever else it takes to Cincy for Walt Jocketty? Please!
