  1. Williams is interesting (he's a college senior for one) especially if the Twins think he can stay behind the plate as a catcher but it's not for lack of skill, it's due to a prior shoulder injury. Last year he was likely a 3rd-5th round pick before tearing the joint capsule ligaments in his right shoulder, not the labrum or the rotator muscles. It's not a very common injury but it scared teams away last year (he went in the 31st round) and looks like again this year too. His power game is huge but as is his swing and miss. Here's what BA had to say about him:
  2. In 2017, Winder set the Virginia Military Institute single-season record for both strikeouts (112) and innings pitched (107.2) while posting a 3.59 ERA. He excited scouts with a plus fastball in the mid-90s that he located well to both sides of the plate. In 2018, the stuff hasn't been quite as good, as the 6-foot-5 righthander has been more in the 91-92 mph range and fallen into the upper 80s as he's gotten into the third or fourth inning and beyond. His slider has backed up as well and it's more of a fringe-average pitch after being a solid out-pitch last year. While he still managed a respectable walk rate with 19 free passes in 85 innings (2.01 BB/9), his strike-throwing has backed up this spring. He's fanned 91 batters through 85 innings and posted a 5.40 ERA in 14 starts. Winder could still get taken in the fifth or sixth round by a team that's confident he'll get back to his 2017 version, but his stock has slipped a bit this spring.
  3. He's apparently a 70 grade runner with an athletic build, his arm is fringe but his speed plays well up in the outfield. His swing is more contact than power but does have the body to add more as he grows.
  4. DaShawn Keirsey is a perfect buy low candidate and someone to keep an eye on, here is what BA had to say about him:
  5. My favorite pick by the Twins the second day has to be Cole Sands, I saw him pitch in HS and liked his stuff but college was the right choice for him. Here is what BA has to say about him:
  6. Going back and listening to some pre-draft coverage podcasts, I did run across where Keith Law and Eric Longenhagen say that Trevor Larnach could see a huge power explosion once a team alters his swing to add more launch angle.
  7. Slot is 1.1M and he's more like a 4th Rd talent at best so maybe the Twins got him at 400-600K which saves ~500-700K for the next pick
  8. And should see them quite quickly as all four are considered advanced and should skip a level or two.
  9. Larnach has 25+ homer power from the left side, no he's not going to wow you with his gems in the field or on the bases. Decent pick overall, I know fans are wanting pitching but college hitters are more stable and easier to grade out and project than high schoolers and college pitchers.
  10. MLB.com 20-80 evaluation on Larnach: Hit 55/80 Power 50/80 Run 40/80 Arm 55/80 Field 50/80 Overall 50/80
  11. Yep exactly, more likely go with a college guy first round save a little $ for picks later. Or the less popular route take a slight HS reach with this pick to save on the next pick for a faller.
  12. Almost seems like some teams are sandbagging early on taking players with less leverage to save money for later picks. Personally l can't believe Liberatore is still on the board but it has to money related
  13. Kelenic is an amazing talent, the first time I saw him was a couple of years ago and he stood out as a HS Sophomore playing against older competition. Little video I took of him from the WWBA: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORaDA18G6YI
  14. The Cubs short season affiliate is out of Eugene, so I plan on going to a couple of games in Hillsboro (Dbacks affiliate). Elsewise I'll be watching the Portland Pickles in the wooden bat West Coast League (college kids from OSU, Pepperdine, USC, Portland State, etc).
  15. lol I think there is a few of us in Portland
  16. Great read on the Top 10 college pitchers and their use/abuse over their college career. Which is even more of a reason to take Kowar.
  17. Yeah the only college catcher worthy of a first round pick is Joey Bart and he's not getting past the Top 5. After him, Raleigh from FSU and Koch from Arkansas and Williams from Clemson and I guess JJ Schwarz from Florida if you still count him as a catcher but most of those are probably Day 2 picks.
  18. Yeah most of your present day MLB 3B and 2B were SS back in HS and even in college. Either outgrowing the position and unable to keep up with the defensive demand.
  19. Trout had also floated out a 4M signing bonus at the time, so teams just didn't pass on him to pass on him. Luckily the scout, Greg Morhardt, who had watched him repeatedly knew the family as he played minor league ball with Mike's dad, Jeff, in the Twins system in the 80s. And truth be told at the time, Gibson was considered a Top 5 pick before hurting his forearm (stress fracture) at the end of his college season.
  20. Is this Terry Ryan's secret account?
  21. Kowar would be a nice pickup at that point, not too risky, fairly safe and I'm always a sucker for a guy with an advanced changeup, there are plenty of scouts who favor Kowar to Singer (who's likely a Top 10 pick) similar a couple years ago when Florida had AJ Puk and Logan Shore.
  22. You are going to have to pay for Rocker, there are signability questions there. It has been floated out that he wants top money or will go to Vanderbilt which really isn't a bad thing for a pitcher with as much raw talent as he has to go to such a great baseball institute that can teach how to pitch. I'll question whether Vandy is better at turning out better pitchers than some of the MLB teams (I'm looking your way Baltimore!)
  23. Little notes from MLB network: The Twins bullpen has given up a .850 OPS, worst in baseball. For those worried about the Twins start, they have 56 game left vs White Sox, Tigers and Royals.
