  1. The Twins lost 6-2 on Sunday afternoon to the Rays meaning they were 3-4 on the road trip. Francisco Liriano had his fourth straight Lirianic start. It wasn’t pretty. Josh Willingham’s hitting streak came to an end. All-in-all, it appears that it would be a great time for the team to head back to home, to Target Field, for a series against the scuffling Boston Red Sox. Of course, they will get to face Jon Lester, Josh Beckett and Clay Buchholz, so it isn’t as though it gets easy. Here is a look at the Twins minor league scores and highlights from Sunday:[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] ROCHESTER 3, LEHIGH VALLEY 2 The teams decided beforehand to just play one game on Sunday. They will make up for Saturday’s rainout with a double header in July. The story for the Red Wings all spring so far has been the performance of lefty Scott Diamond, and that story did not change today. On the game, Diamond went seven innings and gave up two unearned runs on four hits. He walked none and struck out four. On the season, he is now 4-0 with a 1.07 ERA. In 25.1 innings, he has given up 21 hits, walked five and struck out 18. As Francisco Liriano continues to struggle, the Twins have a guy in Rochester, pitching on the same schedule, who is earning another opportunity. Casey Fien recorded his fourth save with two scoreless innings. He gave up just one hit. Matt Carson led the offense. He was 2-3 with his seventh double and two RBI. He also stole his second base. Ben Revere went 2-4. It was a nice two-game series win over the IronPigs, the top team in the league. NEW BRITAIN, NEW HAMPSHIRE The Rock Cats, like most of the teams in the northeast, had their game postponed. FT. MYERS MIRACLE 8, ST. LUCIE 9 It was a crazy game in St. Lucie. Playing on the east side of the state, the Miracle grabbed an early lead in the 2nd with a single run when Jairo Perez singled in Anderson Hidalgo (who had tripled). Then in the top of the 4th frame, they busted out for five runs. Jairo Perez, Michael Gonzales and Andy Leer hit consecutive RBI doubles. Later Oswaldo Arcia singled in the fifth run. However, starter Pat Dean gave up five runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Miracle lead to one, but Arcia launched his first home run of the year to give the Miracle a 7-5 lead in the 6th inning. The Mets reclaimed the lead in the 7th with three unearned runs. In the eighth, Arcia tripled to tie the game. But the Mets won the game in the bottom of the 9th. Pat Dean started and gave up those five runs on six hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out five. Bruce Pugh gave up three unearned runs in the seventh, courtesy of his own throwing error. Jose Gonzalez pitched a scoreless eighth, but he gave up the winning run with one out in the 9th. Arcia led the hitting attack. He was 4-5 with a triple and home run. It was his first homer and second triple. Jairo Perez was 3-5 with his fifth and sixth doubles. BELOIT 3, WEST MICHIGAN 6 Madison Boer made a very strong start, but West Michigan came up with a big eighth inning and took the win. Boer gave up two runs on three hits in 6.2 innings. He struck out two. Ryan O’Rourke came in and after getting out of the 7th. He then gave up four runs on five hits and a walk in the 8th frame. Eddie Rosario led the offense. He was 3-4 with his fifth double and two RBI. Rory Rhodes went 2-4 with his second double. Jhonathan Goncalves was 2-4 with his sixth double. --- Players of the Day for Sunday, April 22, 2012 Hitter of the Day – Oswaldo Arcia Pitcher of the Day – Scott Diamond --- A Look Ahead – Monday, April 23, 2012 Schedule Rochester – No Game Scheduled New Britain vs New Hampshire – RHP Steve Hirschfeld Ft. Myers @ St. Lucie – RHP Miguel Munoz Beloit @ West Michigan – LHP Steve Gruver --- If you have any questions or comments on the Twins minor league system, players, teams, etc., leave them in the Comments and I’ll try to answer them!
  2. I like that plan, mnfireman. Sounds like a good idea to try to get him going.
  3. Blackburn is starting on Tuesday. Swarzak pitched today and could make Liriano's next start. It's not a terrible idea. Honestly, I just don't think there is a great idea in this situation. It's guessing at this point.
  4. Completely.
  5. Guys like Thomas are around so that guys like Revere, Benson and Tosoni can develop more. Develop more for next season, when the Twins hope to be competitive again. That's why Parmelee should be in Rochester getting at bats every day.
  6. Me too, since they released him 3 weeks ago, the day before the season started.
  7. He's definitely struggling right not. Poor plate appearances, too many strikeouts, not enough walks, strictly a pull hitter. I think we've seen some improvement defensively since the beginning of the season. Frankly, Burroughs is not better, but he might warrant a little playing time. There's no one in Rochester to consider. Or New Britain, for that matter. In his three years in the organization, I haven't seen him struggle like this though. I don't expect 2010 numbers, but I do hope for much, much more than we saw in 2011 also.
  8. And we think that Jeff Gray was frustrating yesterday...
  9. I tweeted this a few minutes ago: "Thinking that the Twins 'see-what-Clete-Thomas-has-got' experiment may be short-lived cuz they are seeing what Clete Thomas has got!"
  10. Tweet from Hughes: "I'm very happy to say that I'm off to Oakland. Thank you to the Minnesota Twins organization and to the fans. Can't wait for the fresh start"
  11. If you're listening to the pregame show, can some please post here any comments made by Jim Rantz, including the Player of the Week (gotta assume Chris Colabello).
  12. He was really solid from May through July last year... then was hurt. It's a fair question, but as long as he's healthy, I don't have a problem with him. It would be nice to give him a day or so though!
  13. Continued: Philip Humber - Heck of a guy. We couldn't get him over the hump. He was impressive, especially his composure. He's had a tough road. Gratifying to see his success. Seen him pitch a lot in big leagues and Rochester. Unfortunately he's doing it for someone in our division. Also was with KC and OAK in between. Liriano - It's been a struggle, and we need him to give us a chance to win. Just needs to throw it over the plate. Strikeout pitches with any of his pitches. Stuff is fine. Health is fine. Mechanics are OK. Willingham - Just what we were hoping for. He's been everything we hoped for. Sandwiched between Mauer and Morneau which is ideal from Gardy. Doesn't show emotion. Lineup - Gardy doesn't ask for lineup thoughts... if he does, I'm all ears. Doesn't want to look like he's second-guessing the manager. Tony Oliva - throwing out 1st pitch today. Inducted into Ted Williams Hitters HOF yesterday. It's for guys that can hit, Tony can hit! If you ever hear a bad word about Tony, come and get me. Has a huge following. Caravan - will see spike in attendance. People love him.
  14. Ryan - playing decent baseball, but not enough for the win. Couldn't get a bases-loaded hit. Doumit hit it hard, but that's how it goes. Road Trip - Splitting nice, but wanted to get 3 of 4. Shields is the best pitcher we've seen all year. Want to win today and have a good road trip. Schedule in April - GMs have some say. For instance, fishing opener, we try to be away. 2013 schedule considering 15 games in each league, inter-league play every day - There are drafts and they're working on it. Rays - Exploring stadium. Issue is constant with Oakland and Tampa. They've made improvements to Tropicana, but they still struggle to get attendance. 13 pitchers - Wouldn't be there if there wasn't so much in flux with Marquis, Blackburn and Perkins. Allowed to forgo DLing Blackburn or Perkins. Once we settle down, get past Boston series, may get back to 12. Hughes - Tough decision. Nobody wants to lost Hughes. Has ability. Has pop. Wish him well. He can do some things with the bat. Flexibility defensively. DFA - immediate decision. He's off 40 man roster. Have 10 days to trade or outright to Rochester. Question: Many teams say Best Player Available, but are Twins focusing on pitching? Answer: We will take best player available. Everyone wants the ideal fit, but we'll take best available. Only want to get compensation is to offer about $12 million Question: Luke French. Answer: Veteran, some major league time, pitched well in NB (Struggled some in last start). Suspect he'll pitch his way up. Aware of minor leagues, get all reports. Rantz is in New Britain. Read game reports nightly. Stay away, but be informed. When it comes to development Nishioka has a high-ankle sprain, sliding into 3B. High ankle means high pain, could be a bit. He's been playing more 2B, but flipping he and Dozier. Wimmers down with sore elbow. Gutierrez and Dinkelman in Ft. Myers. Question: Gardy was ejected. Any further consequences? Answer: He'll get a call from the commmissioner's office. They'll explain their side. Gardy explain his side. This one was more cordial. Ejections: Players can file a report as well. Ability to get their say. Ultimately, they will get fined, likely will... not serious. Ump/Player relations - thinks there is some improvement.
  15. Kris Attebury is currently on and they're trying to get Cory and Terry. Be sure to tune in to 1500espn.com to listen.
  16. Twins hope to win a series in Tampa. Here is the lineup they'll go with: Denard Span CF Jamey Carroll SS Joe Mauer C Josh Willingham LF Justin Morneau DH Chris Parmelee 1B Danny Valencia 3B Clete Thomas RF Alexi Casilla 2B SP: Francisco Liriano Rays Lineup: Desmond Jennings LF Ben Zobrist RF Carlos Pena 1B Evan Longoria 3B Jeff Keppinger DH BJ Upton CF Sean Rodriguez SS Chris Gimenez C Elliot Johnson 2B SP: Jeff Niemann
  17. Carroll is a perfect #2 hitter. As Mackey has pointed out several times, over his last four seasons, his OBP is .366!! .366!! That's remarkable. At the top of the order, you want guys that get on base... If you have Span, Carroll, Mauer... that's a lot of runs to drive in for Willingham, Morneau and Doumit, and that's a good thing.
  18. Thomas will be back in the lineup today (Sunday), Gardy just said on his show, because he is 3-6 lifetime against Jeff Niemann.
  19. Red Sox - everything that can go wrong, will go wrong... they're having a rough time, and hopefully we can keep them having a rough time. Valentine - fans and players against him - I know he made some comments that didn't go over well. Performance on the field helps comments not seem so bad. Hughes - We got stuck with our pitching. Not going to DL Perkins or Blackburn. Had to move a player. Need Parmelee to play 1B. Plouffe, Burroughs and Hughes all out of options. Will probably lose him. Dozier - always on radar. He's working on coming in on baseballs. Little back issue, but sat out. He's doing fine. He's going to be a good one. Casilla - he's in no-no land right now, gotta get him going. Schedule - Still have more tough games ahead. Boston still has great players. KC - good young players. Detroit coming up. 5-10 not good, but we feel good about where we are.
  20. Philip Humber/AJ Pierzynski - Perfect Game - Team was actually watching the game in the clubhouse. Very neat. Humber normally throws a lot of pitches. Was fun to watch and always fun to see something like that. Remember from Humber (Note - only 11 big league wins before yesterday) - Outstanding curveball. Nice changeup. Fastball decent. When with Twins, coming off elbow injury, struggled with his control. Looks bigger and stronger. Liriano - He just needs to have confidence in his own ability. He'll tell them that he's fighting it. Gardy tells him that it's just a kids' game, have fun, it's a game, not every pitch is the end of the world. He might be the only one who doesn't realize how good he can be. Mauer will catch him today and Gardy told Joe to try to keep him out of his head and having fun. Contract year could be part of his struggles and over-thinking. Blackburn - just finished a bullpen. All-out bullpen and he feels fantastic. Two bullpens. He'll start Tuesday. Perkins - is ready to go. Feels great. 100% Swarzak - will go to the 'pen and get him in the mix. Gibson Ejection of Span, then Gardy - Gardy won't be fined. Was still arguing the balk call earlier. Denard just said that wasn't a good pitch. Thought it could have been handled better. Denard said, "I'm not disrespecting you" one too many times.
  21. Here are my notes from this morning's Ron Gardenhire Show on 1500ESPN. Listening on www.1500espn.com: Like the they're getting runners in scoring position, James Shields is good, but would like to get the runs in. Like our offense. If Twins win today, would be a 4-3 road trip between NYY and TB!Morneau is swinging good. DH today. At home, you'll see him playing some 1B. He's anxious to get out there. Had a great series in NY. Gardy and Morneau talk before and after every game.Mauer-Willingham-Morneau - Why? - Willingham is swinging well. Lefties are swinging and missing more. Perfect situtation to split them up. Makes decision for other manager tougher.Carroll down in order - Would do it if he really struggled. But he does all the little things like moving people over. Like him there now because he takes so many pitches which helps everyone.First commercial...
  22. Only players currently in the Twins organization will be eligible. Williams was released before the season started.
  23. It will be first-come, first-serve on Monday morning. The "winner" will be based on the timeline (if two people pick the same player at the same time).
  24. People not currently in the Twins organization would not be eligible for adoption... but I am liking the idea of having a second adoption in mid-June, after the draft and just before the short seasons begin.
  25. Don't be scared off by the Weekly requirement. We'll likely change that to every two weeks. But, there are games every day. Always something.
