  1. Tigers sign Tom Gorzelanny to a 1 year, $1M deal. Amazingly cheap signing. Either his medicals are putrid, or the Tigers just got one of the best bargains of the offseason.
  2. The final vote (17 total votes): Randy Johnson 100% Pedro Martinez 88.24% Jeff Bagwell 88.24% John Smoltz 82.35% Craig Biggio 82.35% Mike Piazza 70.59% Mike Mussina 64.71% Barry Bonds 52.94% Roger Clemens 52.94% Curt Schilling 47.06% Tim Raines 47.06% Larry Walker 29.41% Alan Trammell 29.41% Edgar Martinez 29.41% Mark McGwire 11.76% Lee Smith 5.88% Gary Sheffield 5.88% Fred McGriff 5.88% Eddie Guardado 5.88% All others - 0%
  3. A few more days left to vote. I'll close voting at the end of Monday and post the results Tuesday before the announcement from MLB. Currently, the vote leaders: Randy Johnson 100% Jeff Bagwell 86.67% Pedro Martinez 86.67% Craig Biggio 80% John Smoltz 80% Mike Mussina 66.67% Mike Piazza 66.67% Barry Bonds 60% Roger Clemens 60% Tim Raines 46.67% Curt Schilling 46.67% Alan Trammell 33.33% Edgar Martinez 26.67% Larry Walker 26.67% Mark McGwire 13.33% Eddie Guardado 6.67% Fred McGriff 6.67% Gary Sheffield 6.67% Lee Smith 6.67%
  4. I don't disagree at all with the desire to go for it at the end of the half. That part bugged me. I'm just stating that there are other reasons as well. I'm honestly quite happy with the Gophers season, especially in light of how the Big Ten has fared in their bowl games. The conference may have been looked down on throughout the season, but the elite of the Big Ten is playing with and defeating the elite of other, more highly-regarded conferences this bowl season, and the Gophers finished in the top half of the conference, which says something for where Minnesota is as a program. Yesterday's game was an unfortunate hiccup in the building, but you can't expect to run before you master walking, and the Gophers had to go back to complete redevelopment of the program to the crawling stage.
  5. Fairly under the radar move, except that it's on a typical day off and there's no other news, so it got more run that it probably would have just a month ago... Braves trade arby-eligible David Carpenter and lefty minor league reliever Chasen Shreve to the Yankees for lefty pitching prospect Manny Banuelos. I'm not sure the Braves' plans for 2015, but they are stocking up some very high-upside arms for the near future with their moves this offseason with guys like Tyrell Jenkins, Max Fried, and now Banuelos.
  6. At the top end, no, there wasn't a difference, but the Gophers had one Maxx Williams. Missouri had multiple guys coming off the bench that were as good or better than the guy they replaced, allowing them to keep guys fresh while also keeping the same level of talent on the field. That's something Kill is building to, but it's not quite there yet.
  7. This is not an excuse whatsoever as there's no reason the Gophers could not have gotten the W today with some better decisions or different breaks (that Edwards missed pass was absolutely huge in swing of momentum), but there was a tremendously obvious difference in speed/size/skill in the two teams. The Gophers have come a long ways in that regards, but today was a good reminder that there's a long ways to go.
  8. Jeez, cannot drop a pass like that, Edwards. That could have been a TD. Leidner threw a perfect pass there.
  9. Nice pass by Leidner!
  10. Very nice start for the Gophers. Two picks and a key 3rd and long stop for the defense in the first three possessions and the offense is doing what Mizzou struggles with - going straight at the defense.
  11. Thank you very much!
  12. What happened? It has disappeared!!
  13. Interesting that it's in this thread as Love is one of the few players who they got by getting a lottery pick. In 2008, they turned the #3 pick into Love after drafting OJ Mayo. Other than that they've had just a couple of lottery picks - 1992 #3 (Laettner) and 2011 #2 (Derrick Williams).
  14. Every one I've ever read or heard, certainly. The "big 3" in Atlanta all three considered him as their worst foe to face, and I've heard guys like Rick Sutcliffe and others who pitched in the 80s/90s/early 2000s that broadcast now mention his name numerous times as the toughest guy to face. Either Glavine or Maddux mentioned him in their HOF speech last year with a pretty wide agreement from the people on stage. He was simply other-worldly in his ability to make contact with the ball, and unlike what many spoke about Greg Maddux how he knew pitching so well backward and forward, but he spoke his own language on it, so no one could understand his ideas - Tony was well-regarded in teaching hitting as well. I'm waxing poetic about the man, sure, but he's one of few players in my 30+ years of following the game that has been an absolute must-watch every single at bat for me, and that's saying something because I'd much rather watch a tremendous pitching and defense game any day than watch a hitter work, but Gwynn was nothing short of remarkable at it.
  15. Every interview of a pitcher who faced him has identified him as either that pitcher's toughest batter to face or most annoying one to face, so, yeah, pretty universal.
  16. Gwynn's election had a very little bit to do with his batting average. He was, without much debate, the most skilled hitter since Ted Williams with the bat. He was also a tremendous athlete that provided a ton of speed at the top of the order when he entered the league. It's pretty universal of pitchers that faced him that the toughest hitter they faced in their entire career was Tony Gwynn, regardless of when in his career (or theirs) they matched up with him. Add on top of that that he was about the most media friendly player in the recent past, and you have an easy vote for BBWAA.
  17. From his perspective, there's not much else he can do in college on an individual level.
  18. I'll lay down my ballot: Jeff Bagwell Craig Biggio Barry Bonds Roger Clemens Randy Johnson Pedro Martinez Mark McGwire Mike Piazza Tim Raines John Smoltz
  19. So here's the entire ballot. Those who have already replied, please let me know your official ballot, and I'll start tallying on a nice spreadsheet. Voting will be open through January 5th. Current voting rules apply, so a player must achieve 75% for Twins Daily induction: Rich Aurilia Jeff Bagwell Craig Biggio Barry Bonds Aaron Boone Tony Clark Roger Clemens Carlos Delgado Jermaine Dye Darin Erstad Cliff Floyd Nomar Garciaparra Brian Giles Tom Gordon Eddie Guardado Randy Johnson Jeff Kent Edgar Martinez Pedro Martinez Don Mattingly Fred McGriff Mark McGwire Mike Mussina Troy Percival Mike Piazza Tim Raines Curt Schilling Jason Schmidt Gary Sheffield Lee Smith John Smoltz Sammy Sosa Alan Trammell Larry Walker
  20. This is honestly the first move the Braves have made this offseason that I was all out on. To stoop as low as AJ, they had to have struck out with their top 5+ options or felt desperate...or both. He just doesn't fit the Braves whatsoever.
  21. I wouldn't move Rubio for a bit, for sure. Heck, if you can get Bennett up to par and Martin healthy, you could run a pretty solid 4-man shift on and off the court with Rubio, Wiggins, Muhammad, Martin, Young, LaVine, Deng, and Bennett making a team that could run teams to death with depth and talent. It'd be nice to get an athletic guy who could protect the rim defensively in the draft.
  22. Glad this has comments as I normally wouldn't have caught it in my periodic check-ins on the Twins part of the forum. I've been a member and a moderator of forums for nearly 20 years at this point (joined my first online forum in 1996), and I've been very appreciative of the attempts of the moderation team here to have a discussion on any issue that does come forth in a respectful and open manner rather than railing on anyone who does cross a line or face a report from another member.
  23. We should do a site vote again and compare how our votes compare to the percentages of voters like we did last year. I'll even volunteer to tally again.
  24. The exact same guys (replacing Uggla with LaStella) had a top-4 offense in baseball in 2013. I'm not saying they're anywhere near an upper-echelon offense, but they should move more toward the middle of the pack with simple regression to the mean.
