Wimmers was Drafted by the Twins in 2010 and was advertised as someone who could rise to the big leagues quickly. He had been named College Pitcher of the Year in 2010 and BigTen Pitcher of the Year in 2009 and 2010. He had a good start to his professional career after being drafted in 2010. It looked like the Twins would get what they wanted and have a pitcher rise to the big leagues quickly. In 2011 Wimmers had a hiccup in his career for the first time, he injured his elbow and ended up requiring Tommy John Surgery. 2012 was spent recovering from TJ and Wimmers pitched in only two minor league games. He had a hard time getting going in 2013 and ended up only pitching in six MiLB game with mix results for the rookie ball GCL Twins. He will look to get going in 2014, this year should tell us whether or not Alex Wimmers will ever live up to the hype he had coming out of college.

I chose to adopt Alex Wimmers because I believe this will be the break out year for him. I am still a believer that Wimmers can slide into the future big league rotation as a solid #3-4 starter. As I mentioned above, I believe this is the year that either makes or breaks him, hopefully makes.

Wimmers had a decent start to his 2014 campaign. He came in to start the 4th and pitched 3.2 innings. He did give up a lot of hits (5) but only one run in his 4th inning of work or class A+. He only had one strike out and only 4 ground outs. This is a bit worry some but it is only the first game of the season. His overall results look pretty good. When looking through the game summary, it looked like he cruised through the first three innings he pitched (4,5,6) and then ran in to his first bit of trouble when he gave up a double, single, and then a sac fly that scored the only run he gave up. He was then taken out and the closer was able to get a one out save. He was credited with his first win in his first appearance.

Yes, he did have a decent start last night. When I asked one of the coaches why the starter only went 3 innings he said sometimes they schedule the starter for 3, sometimes 4, and then the second guy the 4 and the 3. Wimmers was the 4 inning guy last night. He looked very good thru the first 3, and then just couldn't get the 3rd out in the 4th inning.

The closer pitched a beautiful at bat. Two 94 mph fastballs that the batter was late on, and then an 81 mph curve that locked up the batter and the game. I was thinking after two strikes, he's late on it, throw another or toss the curve. The curve to perfection.

He didn't actually start the game, he came in to start the fourth inning and gave up his run on the second out of the 7th and final inning and was then relieved.

What kind of pitcher is Wimmers? Who is a current MLB pitcher he is similar to?

Wimmers is said to be a control type pitcher that will out smart hitters rather than blow them away. Coming out of college he was said to have three plus pitches including a very good change up. I think when the Twins drafted him, they were dreaming about a Brad Radke clone coming to Target field.

His change up was his only "plus' pitch coming out of college, the fastball and change were graded as average.

He'd have been a top 3 to 5 overall pick with 3 plus pitches.

During the second at bat of the bottom of the first inning, it looked like it was going to be a rough start for Alex Wimmers, one that might have been the final straw one the patience of some Twins fans. Alex has been a disappoint for Twins fans to this point in his career because he has not stayed healthy. After giving up a leadoff double and then balking him to third, I was afraid this would be the start that a lot of Twins fans would tell me to give up on him, he's done. Oh how wrong I was. After that scary start, he buckled down and retired the remaing 18 batters he would face on the night. When his start was over after six stud innings, his line read 0 runs on 1 hit, with 6 k's and free passes. He had six ground outs and three fly outs. He is now 2-0 on the year with a 0.93 era and a 0.62 whip with a .176 obavg. It was a great first start of the year for Wimmers after having a solid first appearance as a reliever five days ago. This start makes me even more exited about Wimmers' prospect status. If he strings together a few more starts like this, he will likely be pushing someone out of AA in the near future.

Appearances 3-5 were not quite as good as 1&2.

It was reported in appearance #3 that he had lost control of his fastball, in his last three appearances he has had 3,3, and 4 walks after having 0 combined in his first two.

After a hot start while the hitters were likely still trying to shake off some off-season rust, he has struggled greatly. He has now been moved to the bullpen and has not fared much better, especially in a league that is supposed to be pitcher friendly. Hopefully this former 1st round pick can still turn things around and be a late bloomer but he has some work to do.

Alex was promoted to class AA and called on in relief right away, his first appearance did not go well but hee is now one step closer.
