Move Mauer to Left Field?

Twins Video

What do you think about moving Joe Mauer to left field? He would be less a fielding liability in left field than Willingham, Arcia, Parmelee, or Herrmann. Vargas looks like he may be successful at 1B...but if not, Parmelee is a good fielder at 1B. Plouffe could be good at 1B also...or even Sano at 1B, leaving Plouffe at 3B. Just saying....

ive often thought we need Joe in Center, evidently mgt doesnt think he has the legs for it.

Willingham plays the ball well..but he doesnt get to some that better legs would.

I like the idea, Mauer to outfield, especially center

Vargas will not be playing 1B at the major league level (except maybe in a game at a National League park)... He's a DH all the way... See David Ortiz

I remember in 2011 when we put Mauer in right for 1 game in an emergent situation. Outside of that, I have not seen him take reps in the outfield, so I couldn't tell you what he's like out there. I wouldn't expect him to be particularly good, but I could be wrong. Clearly, Willingham is not returning, he may not even be on our team 5 weeks from now, opening a vacancy in left.

By next year, Sano will be up most likely, which could displace Plouffe. I don't mind Plouffe as a LF option or a 1B option, but I don't see Gardy moving Mauer around again.

Sano and Vargas are 2 players, though, that I see as DH's. They are not destined for greatness in the field, but they may be at the plate, meaning that one must have a position. I like Plouffe as an OF option over Mauer, though.

By this time next year, we will have a jam of infielders with Mauer, Vargas, Plouffe, and Sano. We could move one to the outfield, but then what happens to Rosario? This logjam of INF's could spell a trade of Plouffe, though I think he is one of the more valuable pieces of our lineup.

Joe really needs to step up and be a good player where he is. Moving around a .250 hitter just because he has such a high percentage of your payroll has no merit. How about an outfielder that is a true athletic outfielder that can crush and hit for average and steal bases play in the Twins' outfield? Now there is a novel idea. Joc Peterson, anyone? We can spout career stats all day, but that doesn't get the job done. Now is now, and Joe needs to step up. The team needs him to step up. It is getting to be quite sad. He is even making himself untradeable (yes, we all know he has a no trade clause and would have to approve one).

OK, I'm still an admitted Joe Mauer apologist (haven't gone to any meetings yet), but i believe the question of moving Joe to LF has more to do with the upcoming IF talent. To say Joe shouldn't play LF because we need someone with high avg, great power, & steals bases? Last I checked, every team wants a perennial all star like that.

I like Mauer and all, but I don't see him getting much better. He's stepped it up a bit lately, but clearly his best days are behind him. I don't care either what he has done in the past, I care about what he can do now. Clearly, he does not have it like he used to. If they cut Mauer and Put Parmelee and eventually Vargas at 1st, you would hear no objection from me.

Cut?

You mean, like, "hey Joe, I need a word with you in my office"?

Seems pretty harsh. :)
