  1. That's a problem solved easily enough. When Herrmann is ready, they just drop/demote one of the other guys - and that's if the Twins don't call up a 3rd catcher, which I can also see happening. I can argue it's wise two different ways... 1) When the primary catchers for the major league team are Mauer & Doumit, two guys with SIGNIFICANT injury histories, an organization should probably be cautious about discarding catchers. 2) Herrmann had a monster AFL, but it certainly isn't clear from his numbers that he mastered AA. Or at least, with a .258 BA and a .392 SLG, it looks like he could still learn a few things there.

  4. I'm good with most of this, but I think it's a mistake to not have Fien & Manship in the bullpen ahead of Gray and Burnett. I understand they would lose Gray, but that isn't much of a loss. And Burnett is becoming the new Capps - a guy with a Rasputin like power to convince them he's somehow better than he performs. (And he may be, but I'd like to see it in AAA, first.)

  6. In a story titled "Hunter, Cuddyer admit Twins were psyched out by Yankees," Jon Heyman quotes Torii Hunter relates a 2004 playoff incident as well as just saying that guys were very nervous about playing the Yankees. What do we think?
  7. According to Joe Christensen, Ron Gardenhire detailed the plan for the Twins early-season rotation in his post game talk. The Twins will start with a four-man rotation for their first four games and and then switch to a five-man rotation for the second cycle. The dark horse who will be added is Liam Hendriks, who will pitch the third game of the season in Baltimore following Carl Pavano and Francisco Liriano. Nick Blackburn will be scheduled to pitch for the Twins Home Opener. Next follows and off day, so the Twins will go back to Pavano on Wednesday. That second time through the rotation will include a fifth pitcher, who will face the Rangers at Target Field on April 15th. That fifth pitcher could be Scott Baker, who is coming back from tendinitis in his elbow, or Jason Marquis, who is out with a family emergency. If both return, it's possible that Liam Hendriks is returned to Rochester, but it's also possible that Hendriks stays in the rotation. If neither is available, the Twins might also consider turning to reliever/swingman Anthony Swarzak, who threw six innings today against the Pirates giving up one run.
  8. As much as has been written about what a waste it is to carry a 3rd catcher, what about a left-handed pinch hitter who is limited positionally and doesn't have much pop? I'm trying to figure out where he bats. I guess for Casilla? Is there anyone else he hits for in this lineup? Carroll, maybe?
  9. In this morning's game versus Boston, judging by Jim Crikket's twitter feed, it sounds like Baker looked a lot better. There may be hope yet....
  10. If there are more than two options, then the most likely guy to make it doesn't necessarily need to have a better than 50% chance to win. See? :-)
  11. This was my thought EXACTLY. To quote (or ripoff) Vanilla Ice: "Go Moyer, Go Moyer, Go!"

  13. (Editors note: Updated at 10:30 with additional information from Joe Christensen's blog.) The Twins announced via Twitter this morning that they had optioned backup catcher to Rochester, reassigned utility infielder Mike Hollimon and placed relief pitcher Kyle Waldrop on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 26th. Furthermore, Butera told Star-Tribune beat reporter Joe Christensen that the Twins told him they were only taking two catchers north, leading Joe to believe that Sean Burroughs has won the last spot on the Twins bench. [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] Butera has served as the primary backup catcher for the Twins the last two years, relying on stellar defensive skills, but struggling offensively to a historical degree. His demotion means that JR Towles, a minor league free agent who came to the Twins from Houston, is the lone remaining option who could be added as a 3rd catcher. However, it appears now the Twins are at least leaning toward carrying only Joe Mauer and Ryan Doumit as catchers. If so (and provided Alexi Casilla's knee is ready in time), it appears that Sean Burroughs would win the last spot on the Twins roster. Burroughs was a top prospect with the Padres who fell out of the major league, struggled with substance abuse issues and returned to the majors last year with the Diamondbacks. He is a left-handed hitting 3rd baseman who would likely primarily be used as a pinch-hitting option. He was signed as a minor league free agent, so he would need to be added to the 40-man roster, but that doesn't appear to be a serious limitation. Hollimon was also a minor league free agent with little chance to come north with the team, but a tremendous spring performance kept him in the running for a utility infielder spot until this last weekend. Waldrop was in the race to make the Twins bullpen but has been out several days with elbow discomfort.
  14. On this question, I still have no idea what they'll do. I notice Butera started yesterday, so he's still in the mix. The Rivas injury further complicates things. Of all the options for that 25th spot, I still think Butera is the most likely, but it's still less than 50/50 he makes it.
  15. Nobody in MN paid any attention to the Senators at any point in their existence. The only people that might care about hat history was the Griffiths. But thre are still plenty of fans that remember the Millers & Saints. The Millers even played in the Met, I think.
  16. First, I should say thre re several things about the guys story that ont add up. But Power to Pavs either way. I'd love to see the community rally around him no matter what and think thy would.
  17. I suppose in a perfect world, Herrmann isn't there past midyear?
  18. The thing about starting Hughes is that the Twins would have to get a backup utility infielder who can play SS. Otherwise, the backup is Plouffe.
  19. I just looked at the numbers. In roughly equal innings, Gray has 2K and 4BB while Fien has 9K and 2 BB. I haven't seen enough of who each has faced, and I assume Gray has the inside track, but that tell me I'd rather Fien get a shot.
  20. I suppose there are two options if Casilla has to miss any length of time... 1) Dozier starts, either at 2B or SS with Carroll taking the other side. 2) Hughes starts and the Twins pick up a utility infielder to back up SS instead of whoever else was making the roster. I assume it would be #1, but maybe they aren't sure Dozier is ready. Or maybe they're getting excited about Hughes? What do you think they'll do? What would you do?
  21. I hope not too. I assume that would mean Dozier's ticket is punched, probably as the starter at second base, (or possibly at shortstop with Carroll moving to second.)
  22. Maybe not so fast. Fien pitched the 5th and 6th innings yesterday and struck out 3. He also gave up a run, but no walks.
  23. Yep, he did. No stolen bases and 1-4 with a walk. I guess we're gonna stay guessing.
  24. I thought the same thing. The Pavano family sounds like they're dealing with a guy with some mental health issues. I hope the leads to relief for them and help for him.
