  1. Tonight, it has been confirmed that the Washington Redskins will trade three first round picks and a second round pick to the Rams for the #2 pick. We can assume the Colts will take Andrew Luck. The Redskins will likely take RGIII. So, I believe that the Vikings are pretty much guaranteed of getting the player they wanted all along, Matt Kalil. Or, would the Vikings really consider taking Blackmon?
  2. I don't know, John, those 27 HR he hit in 2010 and being named the Twins minor league hitter of the year tell me that he's shown it a couple of years in a row. The strikeouts are a concern. His aggressiveness can be positive or negative, so my opinion of Benson's future is how long it takes for the game to slow down for him. He's already the top defensive outfielder in the system.
  3. Chang is a very good shortstop. Decent bat too.
  4. I'm much more worried about Blackburn than about Marquis, and you're right, at that time, Doyle and/or Hendriks could be ready.
  5. Ideally each team would have two 'impact' players come up each year and contribute to their team's already stacked, impact player roster... right? That seems to be the expectation of many. And that's fine. But they couldn't have known that Thompson and Kelly would be hurt forever or Sanchez was going to turn into what he turned into. This isn't meant as degrading, but does anyone think that Twins fans might have been a little spoiled when, between 2003 and 2006, the Twins had Morneau, Mauer, Crain, Baker, Garza, Slowey, Neshek and Liriano all come up and do very well right away? That is certainly not the normal for any team. That's not excusing not having impact guys come up for a few years, although Valencia was certainly an impact player in 2010, right?
  6. Clay Condrey had to go on the DL at the last minute two years ago so Burnett went to Anaheim to start the season with the Twins. He was going to be sent down about a week later but someone else got hurt. He actually pitched alright the first half of that year, but has struggled since.
  7. and if those two are amongthe best relievers? They have a 40 man spot, and I'd say that there are some 40 man guys (like these two) who could be expendible if needed. No need to rush Gutierrez,Burnett,Oliveros, etc if they have things they can work on when you've got guys like this who can be removed from the 40 any time.
  8. Not good news for Jason Pridie, suspended 50 games for violation of drug program. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/03/09/jason-pridie-suspended-50-games-for-violating-minor-league-drug-program/
  9. Very nice article by Tom Powers of the Pioneer Press on Miguel Sano. http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_20138741/tom-powers-miguel-sano-wonder-child-minnesota-twins
  10. Ossie - Butera has two options remaining. He hasn't been optioned since 2009. Steve - Absolutely NOT giving up on Alex Burnett. I still believe he'll be an 8th inning guy in baseball. I just completely believe in the process through the minor leagues, and he never got that. I really believe that the best thing for him and his career is to start the season and get 2-3 months in AAA. I think the same thing about Lester Oliveros.
  11. Baker for me... although if the Twins want to contend, they'll almost need it to be Liriano, right? (from the standpoint that he truly can be an Ace... Baker is close to that too when he's on.)

  14. If you follow the tremendous work of 1500 ESPN's Phil Mackey, you know that every Sunday, he posts an updated 25 man roster projection. Phil is in Ft. Myers and talking to players, coaches and front office personnel, so he may have some insider information. But, I think that we can all do our own roster projections because until we get to April and the team has to announce their 25 man roster, anything can happen. I hope to post my projection updates each Friday and hope that you will leave your projections in the comments and discuss. The players in Red are players that I believe are givens to make the roster (obviously pending injury). Those in black are potentially up for grabs. Catchers: Joe Mauer, Ryan Doumit, JR Towles Although Towles isn't exactly an exciting prospect like he was 5 years ago, he likely is an improvement over Drew Butera. If the team insists on three catchers, I now believe Towles tops Butera. Infielders: Justin Morneau, Alexi Casilla, Danny Valencia, Jamey Carroll, Tsuyoshi Nishioka, Luke Hughes It certainly doesn't sound like the Twins really want to keep Nishioka around. I personally think that in terms of a pure utility infielder, Ray Chang would be the right choice. I think Luke Hughes is on the bench for power, if he is not placed on the disabled list. Outfielders: Ben Revere, Denard Span, Josh Willingham, Trevor Plouffe As much talk as there has been about Plouffe taking over in LF with Revere as the 4th outfielder, Plouffe will have to improve tremendously with the glove for that to happen consistently. Starting Pitchers: Carl Pavano, Francisco Liriano, Scott Baker, Nick Blackburn, Jason Marquis No changes, no surprises here, although Terry Doyle and Liam Hendriks have looked good in their couple of outings early in spring. Bullpen: Matt Capps, Glen Perkins, Brian Duensing, Anthony Swarzak, Jared Burton, Jeff Manship, Terry Doyle The first four appear set. Burton was the non-roster invite who garnered the most attention coming in to camp, and he's been good so far. Too many people have forgotten about Jeff Manship as a bullpen option, and he's been good. If Terry Doyle continues to pitch well, the Twins will certainly want to keep their Rule 5 investment. It is early, and we know guys like Kyle Waldrop, Alex Burnett, Lester Oliveros, Jeff Gray, Esmerling Vasquez, Matt Maloney and others will try to make an impression. I admit as well that I am intrigued by Brendan Wise as well. Those last three names are certainly debatable and subject to change over the next three or four weeks. What are your thoughts? What does your roster look like?

  17. I'm pretty sure no one is claiming that it is... although, once Matt Moore loses his "prospect eligibility," I don't know that there is much difference.
  18. Fair enough... but I think we all know that there is a difference between an Impact player and a role player... individual definitions of each are dependent upon each person's opinion. I guess I would have to add another option in between those two. In my mind, a guy like Dozier may not be an Impact player if defined as a multi-time All-Star. But if a guy becomes a guy who plays 140 games a year for 3-6 years, that's certainly more than just a role player. I also don't believe that a #3 starter is a "role" player either. He may not be a Cy Young candidate and make that big of an impact, but to a 25 man roster, the number 3 starter is certainly more than just a role player. In my prospect rankings, I generally don't rank relievers very high, but if you Carlos Gutierrez becomes "a dominant force in the 7th or 8th inning", that's a very important role. If Rene Tosoni is a platoon starter or a bench bat, that's a role player, for sure. My point wasn't to say that the Twins have a lot of guys who will be Hall of Famers in the upper levels, but they have 5-6 guys who could contribute in a big way (as a starter in the lineup, as a starting in the rotation, or a key component in the bullpen) and several others who can fill roles. The cupboard is far from bare.
  19. I get what you're saying, but to be honest, I don't care if they would start for those other teams. The Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies are the only teams that may be able to afford getting stars at all positions. Any team with a payroll south of $140 million is going to have a few players making league minimum. Playoff and winning teams will need some stars too, and that gets back to the discussion about how the Twins really need to get health and performance from Mauer, Morneau, Span, Liriano and Baker... those are the impact players. I guess my other point is that sometimes these guys that are considered 2nd or 3rd tier prospects by the experts come in and perform very well, above expectations, for 3-5 years when they are most valuable to their teams.
  20. Sounds like Liriano is looking really sharp. 93 on the fastball, 84 on the slider for the 2nd inning strikeouts.
  21. Congratulations to friend of Twins Daily, Lindsay Guentzel, on being named this morning as one of nine people who will spend the season in the MLB Fan Cave in New York City. What an honor for her! It should be great and anyone who has MLB Network will be able to keep up with her all summer as many guests will visit her and the other guests.
  22. Fastball at 94-97, and a pretty sharp slide. I'd say that's two pretty top pitches.
  23. Thrylos - Robertson was bad as a starter in 2010 in New Britain and was moved to the bullpen after that season. His second half last year was terrific and a direct result of staying at the level. Look at Lanigan's 2011 numbers. Are you sure he should have been in AAA? I'm not saying those AAA starters were good, but there are times when you can't push the prospects and have to get a minior league free agent instead. shanewahl - Span was floundering in the minors... how does that indicate he needed to move up? I agree with you on Tolleson and especially Singleton. Garrett Jones plays RF, 1B and DH... at the time, the Twins had Cuddyer, Morneau and Kubel at those positions. I like Wilkin Ramirez. Two years ago, he was a top 5-6 Tigers prospect. he's got talent. he's a good guy to take a chance with. I don't get the Mastroianni thing either. I like Herrmann as much as anyone, but I definitely think another half-season of AA would be best for him. 200 at bats is like 2 months or a little less. jmlease - that's my point... lots of sure-thing guys bust, and if the Twins, in fact, have 4-5 guys who should be big league starters who will start the season in AAA, that's not a bad thing at all... that was really my point.
  24. Very nice article by Phil Mackey about Perkins' "Come-to-Jesus" moment one year ago. http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Mackey_A_cometoJesus_meeting_last_spring_led_to_Perkins_extension030812
