  1. I think Tommy Watkins does more with the players than Jake (based on 3 games...) Watkins does all the defensive shifts, works all the scouting reports for each ab, pre-game warm ups he is doing all the drills. He is the most active guy in the dugout. Jake plays 3b couch and relays the pitching call to the catcher. I have not seen many other teams so I dont know if this is the normal break down of roles.
  2. One last thing max Kepler played so I got to see him in action. He had been doing the 1st base coach the other 2 games. He is full on a professional at what he does. If he is not in the field or getting ready to bat he stands next to the hitting coach (who is non-stop working the scouting book and telling jake about the current batter). I get the feeling his is the prototypical "Twins type" for sure.
  3. Not much to say about lastnights kernels game. Lots of hits with not much to show. The new ss looks like he might not be 100 pounds...but he can swing the bat and had surprising pop for as thin as he is. One strange thing I noticed, after the game we stayed for the fireworks - the qc bandits team came out and sat in the visitors dugout for the show, they had all changed into their normal clothes. I had seats next to the dugout at home plate so I could see inside. I was a bit surprised to see 4 or 5 of their young players wearing other teams hats and shirts... Marlins, cin, and mil are the 3 I remember. The manager was in there as well. I understand how every player likely grew up liking a specific team but to display that and to do it at the ballpark is a bit odd I thought.
  4. Not much to say about last nights Kernels game Berrios did not look good at all, the box score shows he had decent early innings but it sure looked like he was struggling to get each out, the 5th inning was as ugly as the box score shows. Gonzales lack of mobility and complete indecision on a play in the 5th could have potentially stopped the flood of runs from happening. After that it looked like the bad news bears out there. I knew it was going to be a long night when both relievers – Powell and Gallant missed the catcher when warming up – as in completely missed. Hitting – lots of base runners wasted
  5. I went to last nights Cedar Rapids game in the Quad Cities – here are my observations (and I am not a scout, nor have I ever been a scout…): Sulbaran was actually pretty amazing the first two innings, every pitch had the bandits fooled, they were missing his breaking stuff by a mile. They don’t have a radar gun up so I don’t know how hard he was throwing. The 3rd and 4th inning he was completely different, they made contact with his pitches for the first time and started to hit some line drives. The 5th inning he was back to making them look silly. Melotakis throws hard – noticeable harder than any other pitcher out there. My wife even said something (she hates baseball and knows next to nothing about the game). He throws 1 pitch and that is it – his fb. All 4 batters he faced were way behind on each of the first few pitches and then they would each start to catch up to it. Quesada is not a good catcher and I think might actually hurt the pitchers getting calls based on the way he handles some pitches – (purely on my non-scout observations). Mike Gonzales is a really big dude Walker seems to talk a lot to his teammates Goodrum has great patients at the plate and really works the pitcher Tommy Watkins is a really friendly guy – he went out of his way to say hi to every fan in the stands wearing Twins gear before the game.
