  1. Slama will be a minor league free agent. I highly doubt he chooses to stay here. I don't think he is, not until next year, but he will be rule 5 draft eligible.
  2. Did anyone hear the Gibson 100 innings from Ryan??? I read it earlier & there is no way that I belive its true (misprint of 160 maybe). I heard Ryan say they wanted to get Kyle to around 70 innings THIS year (counting Instr. Lg & AFL). Still will surprise me if its 160 as they let Liriano get to 200 the first year back. Dont know why they would change philosiphy, but they wont contend next year so its no big deal On the radio he said (or the assistant gm) 20-25% increase from this year to next year. that would put it right around 100IP if he gets to that 70IP area. That is why they are sending him to instructional ball, and the Arizona Fall League.
  3. Appel would be the smart pick, next year is considered weaker then this year. Now yes all of that can change, but Appel is the top guy, and closest to the majors right now. He will be a senior. If he chooses not to sign, the Twins would get the draft pick 1 pick later the following year, which will probably be deeper. I think the sign ability issue just isn't there. Now thats not to say some guy comes out of nowhere next year and is better, yes that guy should be picked. But don't pick against Appel if he is the best available.
  4. If the Twins didn't have such a bad track record of free agent middle infielders I'd consider it, but I look at it and think, between Dozier, Florimon, Carroll and whoever else is in the system, that going out and paying 3.5 million for another Carroll is a waste of money. Generally my philosophy is the Twins should avoid spending money on bullpen arms and middle infielders because what they are willing to pay and the type they go after are very similar to those that can be found at AAA. If you look at many of the Twins numbers they aren't a terrible team, then you look at the starting pitching and its ridiculous and its only somewhat leveled off because guys like DeVries and Deduno are pitching above their talent. And if Gibson is going to be capped at around 100 innings, that could cause even more problems. Walters doesn't look right, so right now the only real guarantee would be Diamond. After that you look at 7-8 guys right now and solid starter isn't anything that is said when describing them.
  5. don't trade for a middle infielder, I feel that is stupid. Because the type of middle infielders the Twins would target in a trade, are just more expensive versions of what they can find in AAA. (not much) The reason you trade Span over Revere, is A. more value, B. in an OF lineup with Parmelee and Willingham, Revere is the better CF, because he covers more ground. And C age, Span is 4 years older, which means if every year you hold on you are probably going to lose value. Whereas Revere you don't, you can hold onto him for 2-3 years and still retain the same value, or even gain more. An OFer needs to be traded, and I'd actually say 2 if they plan on using Parmelee in the OF. Revere is cheaper, and is not at the peak of his value like Span.
  6. You see, I'm over in South Dakota where we have independent baseball with a bunch of no names and if your lucky 1 or 2 has beens and maybe once a year a draft holdout makes his way to town, and Sioux Falls which is in the 130,000 pop range averages around 2,500 a game. So when I see affiliated baseball and what I like to call good affiliated baseball team(a program that sends top prospects) and see what I've seen right around a 1,000/game (maybe more maybe less) I just wonder what is going on there. But as I've learned they have competition a declining ballpark, a struggling economy, and so on. Thanks for the updates, I do love the nickname "Snappers" and would love for Beloit to be able to support the team but I just see the numbers and facilities and it makes me wonder.
  7. Since I'm getting so many good answers, I'll keep asking questions. What is the reason for the low attendance? I know Beloit itself is pretty small but if you add Janesville and Rockford it is fairly large (100,000+). I understand the economy isn't great in the area but still. They average less then 1,000/game, the Twins actually send prospects to Low-A. So is the reason they aren't drawing is because the facilities are bad, the local economy can't support or is it just not Twins territory?
  8. I'll take my shot at this. In the past 2-5 years Fort Myers or more noticeably Lee County has expressed interest to acquiring a 3rd Spring Training team. However since they have expressed their interest they have built the Red Sox a new $80 million stadium and are in the final plans to put $30 million into renovations for the Twins. It says that the Nationals have expressed interest of moving to Fort Myers but I'm sure they would only do it for a publically funded stadium and facilities. The only thing would be is if Lee County told the Twins the only way they would renovate the stadium is with the Nationals as co-tenants but I really don't know.
  9. First of all how did the Twins end up with Beloit as their affiliate? Is this Terry Ryan's ties to the area? Or did they piss off every other affiliate in the Midwest league? I guess if its just facilities I don't really understand why the Twins ended up their, and why they have stayed their. I understand the greater Beloit area from Janesville to Rockford has been hit pretty hard by the recession but at the same time the issues being brought out have been there long before we knew what a housing crisis or auto decline ever was. I guess I look at Beloit, and wonder why do they continue to have a franchise? And how did the Twins end up there, and if they are so bad why have they stayed for what 6-8 years?
  10. The move I don't get is Guerra, its like why not? Lets see what he has, I can already see the Twins next spring, deciding to bring him North because he is out of options, not having a clue what he has, or losing him trying to send him down because they don't know if he is ready. Well jesus, make a damn decision on the guy. Is he the top prospect we were all promised in the Johan trade? no, but lets at least see what he has for ourselves. And the same can go with Slama,
  11. Here is what is going to happen, Span will be moved in the off season. Revere will move to CF, Parmelee will continue in RF, where though not great, isn't terrible out there either. Now what I would do is move Willingham before the deadline, my guess is either Benson, Hicks or Arcia will be ready to play LF by then. If 2 are ready, I trade Doumit as well. The reason I don't trade Morneau before next year at the deadline is because of value. I'm not in the know but my guess is Morneau sells well with the average Twins fans, I bet they sell quite a few of his jersey's and his off the field events are pretty well attended. If Morneau showed up healthy next year and put up a .320 35HR 120 RBI's season with a different team it looks terrible on the Twins front office (that doesn't look great right now). So I think they would rather put up with a .260 25HR 80RBI season and let him walk unless a great deal comes his way next year.
  12. If this has previously been discussed I apologize but what is the financial difference to the big club if they go with a team with A+ facilities compared to one like Beloit with the bare minimal? Is the contract more expensive? Is there other obligations? Or is the contract all the same?
  13. Put me in, and I'm not even a Slamatime fan. What I'd really like though is a comment from his agent.
  14. Dozier- The Twins threw him under the bus, after a play where many people said he made the right move, he hadn't been hitting for a while, his defense had been so-so, but when he made a play they didn't like, they threw him under the bus and basically said he'd have to prove he deserved. so whatever, I'll live with this, I think him being called up would help his development but whatever. The problem I have is there are pitchers who are either rule 5 eligible or out of options in AAA, and the Twins don't really care. Call up Manship and have him start 2-3 games, call up Guerra, he is out of options. I thought Thielbar should have been called up but being selected to the Ariz Fall League probably hurt his chances. As far as Slama, again as I have previously stated, I am not a big fan of his, I don't think he will become a MLB closer, but at the same time even an idiot would have to admit he warrants a September call-up on a last place team. As far as Hicks and Arcia, unless they were going to give them AB's I agree with the decision, I just hope next year if they are ready they will get the call.
  15. Is it the medical staff or is it the front office and gardy? The medical staff I'm sure gives an honest opinion on most cases, though they have seemed to botch a few. Pavano's arm, Kubel's foot last year, Mauer's knee, etc. But over the last year I've seen way too many day-to-day's turn into weeks, and then months. Which makes me think its more the front office then the doctors. Lets say its something like this. Dr. well its not great, blah blah blah, could use surgery TR: well can he pitch through the pain? Dr. yeah, the damage is done, if he can pitch through the pain he'll be fine. TR: so and so is day to day with arm problems Guy tries to pitch through it, struggles, they try rehab, that doesn't work, and then 8-12 weeks later they decide on surgery. Well was the Dr. wrong? So I think it might not be 100% medical staff, I think it might be more the front office. I don't care what the Dr. is telling me, if my centerfielder can't take BP 9 days after the injury I'm going to DL him.
  16. I just don't really get the call-ups. I guess I understand that Dozier hasn't really deserved a call-up but at the same time I think he needs to be called up. Slama? really. Why don't they just 60 man DL Capps? Same with Span, this well they might be ready late in the year is just a joke. For a pitching staff that very few really deserve a pass and a free ride into next year, I thought they could have called up a few more names to look at.
  17. I don't have a problem with the list. I like Benson but I don't know if he is in the prospect category now. I think if healthy he will have a solid major league career. As far as other pitchers? I agree there isn't a ton of them in the organization.
  18. If you are a Major Leaguer you are a Major Leaguer I get that, but at the same point when very few, if any of the fan base you play for understand why you are part of the team then you may not be much more then a Major Leaguer.
  19. I don't really care about starting their clocks, I think that is the wrong reason to hold someone back and in the past hasn't worked great. However I think if you call up a guy from AA they better be playing. And I just don't see where they would get solid AB's at in the Twins OF
  20. I was never really high on him, but from listening to the reports, his stuff just isn't there.
  21. I've watched most of the games this year and though Mauer's throws haven't been great, much if it is attributed to other factors as well. I've seen too many at-bats when no one could throw him out, I've also seen more then a few times where something goes wrong at 2B.
  22. Kubel I'm next to positive, he was called up, played in the playoffs, then tore his knee up in the AZL. I'm pretty sure there have been a few others as well.
  23. I guess it does make sense then if he is the only OF worthy of a callup. I was more mocking not making the move for the last 3 weeks. Sprained SC-Joints can be quite painful, with that joint sprained you have problems lifting your shoulder above your head, and when you do it is quite painful. the rest of the mobility isn't too bad.
  24. Phew! Now I feel better. I've been losing sleep wondering how we were going to get Carson that extra three days to play. Also, I'm not sure if this is true. I don't think the 10 day rule applies once September 1 rolls around. The bigger issue is that reading more it appears that Span might be done for the season so they figured they might as well have the extra player for tomorrow. I didn't think it did either, every year someone sends someone down or calls someone up on the 31st so they can be on the playoff roster. I remember the Twins doing it in the past and don't ever remember another move were someone went down for 10 days. And what I was getting with Carson is how they made the move now rather then wait to the 3rd, had no problems for the last 18 days with a crappy bench and all of a sudden they make it sound like they can't wait for Carson.
  25. Wait nevermind, they will call up Carson and play him over Parmelee instead, I had to think like Terry Ryan and Gardy for a second
