Game 47 - Twins vs Tigers - 5/27/12

Matt Capps blew his first save of the season in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Tigers.

He also took his second loss. Tasked with protecting a 3-2 lead, Capps allowed a leadoff single to Quintin Berry before serving up a one-out, two-run bomb to Miguel Cabrera. A bad afternoon, but not an outing that is going to cost Capps his job. He's the owner of a 4.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 9/1 K/BB ratio through his first 18 innings and 18 appearances

I agree. Let's get some perspective here - if we had been told at the start of the season that Capps would covert 90% of his save opportunities throughout the year, we would have been ecstatic. Anyone can have a bad day and throw a couple of bad pitches. If it happens the next couple of times, then we can start griping. As far as I'm concerned last year is history and has no bearing in how players are evaluated.

If you had told me that that Capps would covert 90% of his save opportunities through May, I would have said it's possible due to small sample size, but it's still not worth the $4M or so we're paying him plus the picks we could have had if he left. The sample size is smaller than I would have guessed or hoped.
