Four runs scored on two hits and two walks while Boyle failed to record a strikeout. The Storm Chasers ripped off four runs in the first inning to grab a big lead. In the bottom of the second inning, DaShawn Keirsey Jr. recorded his second big fly at Triple-A to put the Saints on the board. In the third inning Willi Castro singled home Chris Williams before Kyle Garlick played Andrew Stevenson on a ground out. Jovani Moran worked a scoreless inning of relief while striking out the side. WIND SURGE WISDOM Wichita 6, Arkansas 5 Box Score Travis Adams took the ball for the Wind Surge Sunday. He gave up just a single run on five hits while walking two and striking out four. Patrick Winkel kicked off the scoring with a first inning solo blast. Aaron Sabato launched a solo dinger of his own in the second inning to make it 2-0. In the third inning, Tanner Schobel tripled home Will Holland and Wichita had a 3-0 lead. In the fifth inning Yoyner Fajardo homered for the eighth time, bringing home Willie Joe Garry Jr., and giving the good guys a 5-0 lead. After giving back a run in the sixth and seventh innings, Holland stole second allowing Alerick Soularie to come home in the ninth inning. Arkansas answered with a three-run blast in the bottom half, but came up one-run short. Sabato had a trio of hits on the afternoon with Fajardo grabbing two of his own. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 7, South Bend 1 Box Score It was Kyle Jones on the bump Sunday for Cedar Rapids. He put up 6.0 innings of one-run baseball on just four hits. Jorel Ortega singled home Noah Miller and Emmanuel Rodriguez before Andrew Cossetti tripled for the third time. His three-base hit brought home Ortega and made it a 3-0 game. In the second inning Miller singled to center field and Carson McCusker raced home. After giving back a run on a third inning solo shot, the Kennels added their fifth when Jose Salas scored on a wild pitch during the fourth inning. Kyler Fedko blasted his fifth homer during the sixth inning, and the solo shot gave Cedar Rapids a 6-1 lead. Kala’i Rosario then lifted a sacrifice fly during the eighth inning to score Fedko and make it a 7-1 game. Miller had three hits out of the leadoff spot, and Cossetti combined with Fedko to grab a pair each. MUSSEL MATTERS Fort Myers 6, Daytona 4 (F/10) Box Score The Mighty Mussels had Juan Mercedes take the ball on Sunday afternoon. He worked four innings of three-run baseball. Mercedes allowed five hits but just one walk. He did strike out two on the afternoon. Fort Myers scored first when Rubel Cespedes singled home Walker Jenkins in the first inning. They gave up a pair during the second inning, and allowed another in the third inning. During the sixth inning, they found an answer. Cespedes clubbed his 12th homer of the season, and the two-run shot brought in Danny De Andrade as well to tie the game. After Dayton scored in the top of the 10th inning, Fort Myers walked it off in the bottom half. Jenkins singled home Luke Keaschall and Ricardo Olivar launched his 10th home run to trot the bases safely. Olivar, Cespedes, Jenkins, and Maddux Houghton each had a pair of hits on the day. 2. The Twins offense showed up in Baltimore, ending a three-game losing streak. The Saints used another double-digit run scoring game with an interesting pitching performance. Wichita had a big first inning and held on for another win. Cedar Rapids just continues to find ways to win games, and they did so again on Friday. Things didn't go well for the Mussels, particularly their starting pitcher, but a rehabbing prospect had a strong game. The FCL Twins split a game at JetBlue Park, and the DSL Twins used a strong start and some power to win. It was a good day in the organization. Keep reading to find out more specifics, and please feel free to fill up the Comments section with questions for me. I'll be happy to answer as many as I can. Here are the records of the six Twins affiliates through games on Friday. St. Paul Saints: 46-31 Wichita Wind Surge: 31-40 Cedar Rapids Kernels: 44-28 Fort Myers Mighty Mussels: 37-35 FCL Twins: 10-9 DSL Twins: 6-13 Let’s get to the report. As always, please feel free to discuss and ask questions. TRANSACTIONS The Twins sent LHP Zach Neff to a rehab in the FCL on Saturday. Catcher Duncan Hewitt was assigned to the FCL Twins. OF Carson McCusker was assigned to the Mighty Mussels. LHP Denny Bentley was activated from the Wichita injured list. RHP Alex Phillips was released by the Twins. . SAINTS SENTINEL St. Paul 10, Gwinnett 3 Box Score The Saints scored early, and then the game went quiet, but then they added six runs in the sixth inning and later to have an easy win. But let’s start with Blayne Enlow. The right-hander tossed five innings of no-hit, no-run ball. He struck out three batters. The only negative was that he walked five batters. Just 44 of his 85 pitches went for strikes. It was his second straight solid outing following his rough Triple-A debut. Aaron Sanchez came on and gave up two runs on three hits and four walks over three innings. He struck out three. Finally Cody Laweryson gave up a solo homer in the ninth inning. It will likely surprise no one that Matt Wallner led the offense. He went 3-for-5 with his 19th double and third triple. Jair Camargo went 3-for-4 with his seventh double. Kyle Garlick went 2-for-4 with a walk and his fifth double. Anthony Prato had two singles. Gilberto Celestino went 1-for-2 with three walks. Andrew Stevenson had one hit and one walk. He also stole his 27th and 28th bases. The top eight hitters in the Saints lineup had at least one hit. Six different players drove in runs. WIND SURGE WISDOM Wichita 5, NW Arkansas 4 Box Score The Wind Surge scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and really held on from there. The lead was cut to 4-3 in the fifth. Wichita added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning which proved necessary because NW Arkansas scored one in the top of the ninth. In the first inning, Patrick Winkel singled to center to drive in Brooks Lee. Soon after, Aaron Sabato singled in Winkel. Seth Gray singled in Sabato eventually. Yoyner Fajardo scored the fourth run courtesy of a passed ball. No one had a huge game, but the Wind Surge got contributions from almost everyone. In the bottom of the eighth frame, Yunior Severino singled to center to drive in DaShawn Keirsey with what proved to be a very important run. The top seven batters had at least one hit. Fajardo went 2-for-4, the only multi-hit game for Wichita. Brooks Lee hit his 25th double, and that was the team’s lone extra base hit. No surprise. Keirsey stole his 26th base, and Fajardo stole his 22nd bag of the year. On the mound, it was Carlos Luna who made the start. He gave up three runs (1 earned) on three hits and a walk in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four batters. Alex Scherff came on with the bases loaded and allowed two inherited runners to score before getting the third out of the fifth inning. He worked a scoreless sixth inning. Taylor Floyd struck out three batters over 1 2/3 one-hit innings. Jordan Brink got the final out of the eighth inning. He gave up a solo homer in the ninth, but that was it, and he recorded his fifth save of the season. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 2, Peoria 1 Box Score Marco Raya gave up an unearned run on four hits and two walks over 2 2/3 innings. He had four strikeouts. 35 of his 53 pitches were strikeouts. Kyle Jones came on and left two runners stranded to get out of the third inning. He went five more innings as well. Combined, he tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings. He gave up two hits, walked two and struck out five batters. Malik Barrington gave up two hits but no runs in the ninth inning to record his first save of the season. The Kernels only had five hits and three walks in the game. But it was just enough. In the top of the seventh inning, Jorel Ortega singled to score Tanner Schobel with the game-tying run. Next up was Noah Miller who singled to right that scored Ben Ross with the go-ahead, and eventually winning run. The Kernels had no extra base hits. No one had more than one hit. The only player to reach twice was Noah Cardenas with two walks. But as they have done all year, the Kernels just found another way to win a game. MUSSEL MATTERS Fort Myers 2, Lakeland 7 Box Score Fair to say that Develson Aria’s 2023 season has been rather inconsistent. He’s either been really good and looked almost dominant, or he has had a forgettable performance. This game fits into the latter category. The southpaw faced six batters. He gave up a single and five walks. Four eventually came around to score. Without getting an out, he threw 31 pitches and just 10 of them were strikes. Jarret Whorff came on and completed four innings. He was charged with an unearned run on one hit and one walk. He struck out four batters. Wilker Reyes gave up one run on four hits over 2 1/3 innings. He struck out five batters. Zach Veen gave up a run on a hit and a walk in 1 1/3 innings. He struck out two batters. Johnathan Lavallee gave up two hits over 1 1/3 scoreless innings, though an inherited runner scored. Austin Martin’s rehab continued. He batted second and DHd in this game. He went 3-for-5 with an RBI, and he stole a base. Ricardo Olivar led off. He went 1-for-3 with two walks and his 10th double. Kamron Willman had the other hit and drove in the other run. Maddux Houghton walked twice and stole his 10th base. COMPLEX THOUGHTS from FLORIDA Game 1: FCL Twins 6, Red Sox 1 Box Score In the first game of this doubleheader, the Red Sox were the home team. The Twins scored five runs in the second inning and that was all they really needed thanks to some really strong pitching. And that’s where we will start. Brayan Medina gave up only an unearned run on three hits over the first six innings. He struck out three and didn’t hurt himself with any walks. He did hit one batter. Zach Neff came on and worked a perfect inning including one strikeout. In that second frame, Andres Centeno started the scoring with his second homer of the season. Omari Daniel drove in Bryan Acuna and Anderson Nova on a bases-loaded ground-rule double. Isaac Pena grounded out to shortstop, but both Frank Nigro and Daniel scored on an error. Pena grounded out to third base in the sixth inning to drive in the team’s sixth run. Nova was the lone Twins batter with multiple hits. He was 2-for-3 and hit his third double. Game 2: FCL Twins 2, Red Sox 8 Box Score Despite the second game also being played at JetBlue Park, the Twins were the home team. They actually took a 1-0 lead after one, but then the Sox scored six runs in the second and that was about it. Matt Gabbert made the start. He was charged with those six, second-inning runs. He completed four innings and gave up ‘just’ those six runs on 11 hits and a walk. He struck out four batters. Cleiber Maldonado came on and gave up two runs on four hits and a walk in two innings. Yon Landaeta struck out two batters in a scoreless seventh frame. The Twins managed just two hits in the second game. Andres Centeno had a single and a walk. Jankel Ortiz had a single and a walk and scored one of the two runs. Nova had two walks, and he had an outfield assist. COMPLEX THOUGHTS from BOCA CHICA DSL Twins 10, DSL Yankees 7 Box Score The Twins jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. They increased that lead to 8-0 with a four-run fourth. The Yankees tried to come back, but the Twins added single runs in the eighth and the ninth innings. After a sacrifice fly by Jayson Bass scored Ariel Castro with the game’s first run, Carlos Silva singled to score Dameury Pena. Moises Lopez then launched his first home run of the season to give them a 4-0 lead. In the fourth frame, it was Castro who doubled to score Juan Hernandez and Angel Trinidad. Yilber Herrera then hit his first homer, another two-run shot. Miguel Cordero earned his first Win of the season with five solid innings. He gave up two runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out five batters. Juan Cota came on and gave up three runs on three hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings. Joel Garcia came in and went the final 2 1/3 innings. He gave up two runs on two solo homers. He had five strikeouts. Herrera went 2-for-3 with the homer and two RBI. Dameury Pena went 2-for-4 with a walk. In addition to his home run, Lopez also walked twice. TWINS DAILY MINOR LEAGUE PLAYERS OF THE DAY Hitters of the Day – Matt Wallner (St. Paul) - 3-for-5, 2B(19), 3B(3), 3 R, 2 RBI, K. 3. Let’s get to the report. As always, please feel free to discuss and ask questions. TRANSACTIONS Wichita placed C David Banuelos on the 7-Day IL. Ft. Myers placed OF Carlos Aguiar on the 7-Day IL. And Seth Gray appears to be in limbo… . SAINTS SENTINEL Game 1: St. Paul 3, Iowa 13 Box Score The Saints hosted a doubleheader at CHS Field on Thursday night. It was a makeup game from a ‘weathered-out’ game from early this season. The Iowa Cubs scored multiple runs in the first five innings, including a game-high four runs in the fourth inning and won this one in a laugher. Randy Dobnak took one for the team in this one. He was charged with nine runs (8 earned) on 11 hits, two walks, and a hit batter over three innings. Jose Bravo came on with two runners on in the fourth inning. He allowed both to score and then was charged with four more runs of his own over two innings. He gave up five hits (including two home runs), walked two and struck out three batters. Connor Sadzeck gave up a hit and walked two batters, but he provide the team with two scoreless innings. That was enough for a top pitching prospect like the Cubs’ Ben Brown, though the Saints batters certainly made him work. He gave up two runs on five hits and six walks in 4 ⅓ innings, though he recorded seven strikeouts. Edouard Julien had the other RBI for the Saints.. Jose Miranda seems to be getting some positive results the past few games. In this one, he went 2-for-3 with a walk and his third double (all this week). Matt Wallner added two hits as well. Jair Camargo continued his power streak. He went 2-for-4 with a solo homer. He now has nine on the season. He also drove in two of the team’s three runs. Game 2: St. Paul 7, Iowa 6 (8 innings) Box Score It was another rough start for Simeon Woods Richardson, but the Saints rallied, forced extra innings and won in a walkoff. Woods Richardson gave up single runs in the first three innings and then was charged with three more runs in the fourth inning when he left with the bases loaded, and all three runners scored with Austin Schulfer on the mound. So, in total, Woods Richardson gave up six runs on seven hits and four walks. He had three strikeouts. Schulfer came in and was credited with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. He gave up two hits and a walk in allowing the inherited runners to score. He struck out three batters. Oliver Ortega continues to impress. He struck out three batters over three scoreless, hitless innings which dropped his season ERA to just 1.50. In the second inning, Tony Wolters singled in Chris Williams to put the Saints on the board. The following inning, Mark Contreras took a bases-loaded walk. Wolters got the scoring started in a four-run fourth frame with his second home run. Elliot Soto scored when Andrew Stevenson stole his 21st base on a wild pitch. Next, Jose Miranda doubles in a run. Edouard Julien drove in Miranda with a sacrifice fly. Then in the eighth inning, with Alex De Goti on third base, Elliot Soto was at the plate. His bat was destroyed on an inside fastball, but the ball was placed in such a spot that the throw home was a little late. The Saints rejoiced. Andrew Stevenson went 3-for-4 with his 11th and 12th doubles. He also stole two bases. Tony Wolters went 3-for-4 including his second home run. WIND SURGE WISDOM Wichita 10, San Antonio 3 Box Score The Wind Surge mounted a big, five-run second inning and kept adding on to hold off San Antonio. Oh, remember up above, our confusion on just where Seth Gray was on Thursday. Well, we don’t have any extra details, but we do know that he played for the Wind Surge in San Antonio. In fact, in the second inning, he got things going with an RBI single that scored Aaron Sabato for the game’s first run. DaShawn Keirsey then hit a ground-rule double that scored both Jake Rucker and Gray. After a pitching change, Brooks Lee drilled his 19th double of the season that drove in Will Holland and Keirsey. Keirsey is now hitting .306 on the season and showing more power than he has in the past. He's always been strong defensively, but is something he has really worked on. He said, "My focus has been more geared to my approach. I'm naturally aggressive in the box, so honing in on swinging at better pitches, along with some swing adjustments we've worked on over the last couple of years has produced some of those results." The Surge added a run in the fourth frame on Keirsey’s sixth home run of the season. They also added a single run in the sixth on a Yunior Severino double that scored Yoyner Fajardo. In the top of the seventh inning, Aaron Sabato hit an opposite-field homer, his first of the season. Later, Lee singled in two more runs to put double digits on the scoreboard for Wichita. Travis Adams made the start for Wichita. He went just 1 2/3 innings. He gave up two runs on three hits and two walks. He added two strikeouts, but he was already up to 47 pitches and more than 30 in the second inning alone. Michael Boyle came on and was perfect for 2 1/3 innings to record the win. Francis Peguero gave up a run over two innings. Regi Grace continues to impress with two more scoreless innings and three strikeouts. Jordan Brink struck out two batters in a scoreless ninth to end the game. Keirsey Jr ended the day going 3-for-6 with his 12th double and sixth homer. He also drove in three runs and scored two more. Keirsey has been leading off frequently of late. It's not new to him. "I led off most of my career at Utah, so it's something I'm familiar with. I've hit in a variety of spots in my professional career so far, but as far as comfort, no spot is more comfortable than another. Hitting is difficult anywhere in the lineup. Regardless of where I'm at (in the lineup), I focus on bringing the same mindset and approach at the plate." Lee went 2-for-5 with a walk but drove in four runs. Sabato went 2-for-3 with two walks and his first homer of the season. Rucker went 1-for-2 and walked three times. Gray went 2-for-5 and stole a base. Yes, for the Wind Surge. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 6, Dayton 0 Box Score Cory Lewis made his first Kernels start since his promotion from Fort Myers this week. Let’s just say, it was successful. The 2022 draft pick tossed five shutout innings. He gave up just three hits, walked one and struck out eight batters. He threw 80 pitches and 56 of them were strikes. His catcher, Andrew Cossetti, said after the game that “Cory had the knuckleball working early, and when he can throw that for a strike, it makes all of his pitches better.” He continued, “He definitely didn’t let the moment get the best of him. He was calm and confident with all his pitches and was able to throw everything for a strike consistently.” Alejandro Hidalgo came out of the bullpen and threw three scoreless innings. He gave up just one hit, walked none and struck out six batters. Miguel Rodriguez struck out two batters in a one-hit ninth inning to hold the shutout. The Kernels offense provided an early lead and then added some late insurance runs. In the first inning, Emmanuel Rodriguez got the scoring going with a sacrifice fly that drove in Tanner Schobel. Ben Ross followed with a solo homer, his eight of the season. In the sixth inning, the Kernels got two more on a two-run blast off the bat of Andrew Cossetti. It marked his first home run in the Midwest League. Cossetti also singled in Misael Urbina with a single in the eighth inning, the final run of the night. The St. Joe’s alum went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the game and helped his pitching staff to a shutout. In between, Tanner Schobel hit his sixth home run of the year. The 2022 Competitive Balance pick led off and went 3-for-5 with his third triple and sixth homer. Six runs and three homers is obviously exciting, but the story of this game was Cory Lewis and his Midwest League debut. As Cossetti said, “I have to admit, I have a lot of fun catching him.” MUSSEL MATTERS Fort Myers 0, Clearwater 2 Box Score Speaking of great debuts, Miguelangel Boadas had a terrific first Florida State League start on Thursday. The 20-year-old right-hander from Venezuela went the first five innings. He was charged with one run on five hits. He only struck out one batter, but he didn’t issue any walks. He did hit a batter. Jarrett Whorff came on and gave up one run on three hits over three innings In reality, the solo home run allowed was the one hit that he would likely love to have back.. He also walked none, and he struck out four batters. Jackson Hicks struck out one in a perfect ninth inning. The Mussels got to face rehabbing lefty Bailey Falter for the first three innings in this game. They recorded just one hit and one walk off of him, but just two struck out. The hit came off the bat of a rehabbing Gilberto Celestino, a line-drive single to left. The other hit for the Mussels was from shortstop Danny DeAndrade. Fort Myers also had three walks. One was by Jorel Ortega who then stole his 17th base of the season. Austin Martin struck out in his first-inning at-bat. He batted second and played in left field as his rehab continues. However, with two outs in the top of the third, he made a catch and left the game due to injury. We’ll update as we find out more information. COMPLEX THOUGHTS from FLORIDA FCL Twins 6, FCL Pirates 5 Box Score The Twins fell behind 4-1 after five innings and 5-2 after six innings. However, they scored two in the seventh and two more in the eighth inning to record a one-run, comeback win. However, let’s start on the mound. Brayan Medina, a 20-year-old right-hander from Venezuela acquired as the Player to be Named Later from the Padres in the Taylor Rogers trade, made the start for the Twins. He went the first four innings. He gave up three runs (2 earned) on four hits and a walk. He struck out four batters. Cleiber Maldonado came on and gave up two runs (1 earned) on three hits and a walk. Pierce Banks got the final two outs of the sixth inning. Jacob Wosinski pitched the final three innings and did not allow any more runs. He gave up one hit, walked one and struck out five batters. The 24-year-old righty stayed home and pitched two years at Grand Rapids (MI) Community College. In 2020, he worked in one game for Akron before the season was canceled. He had Tommy John surgery, so in 2021, he pitched in just five games. He returned for the 2022 season and pitched in 13 games. He spent the summer of 2022 and started this year with the Eastside Diamond Hoppers of the USPBL and signed with the Twins in late May. Wosinski is 6-8, about 220 pounds, and he throws his fastball into the mid-90s. Just-For-Fun Trivia: Can you name the recent Twins minor leaguer to play at Oakland University in Michigan. After five years in the Twins organization, said player is currently in the American Association. The hitters managed just five hits in this game. However, they also walked 11 times. Byron Chourio went 1-for-2 with three walks. Freddy Michel also walked three times, and Isaac Pena walked twice. Jose Rodriguez had the lone extra base hit, his first double of the season. Omari Daniel recorded his first professional hit, walked once and then stole two bases. COMPLEX THOUGHTS from the DOMINICAN DSL Twins 14, DSL Angels 16 Box Score The runs were plentiful at the Angels complex today in the Dominican. The Twins fell behind 13-3 through the first six innings. They scored five runs in the top of the seventh, but then the Angels scored three more runs in the bottom of the inning for a 16-8 score. The Twins added one in the eighth and almost came all the way back in the ninth with a five-run inning but fell just short. We will start with the positive, the offense. Outfielder Jayson Bass, who signed in February out of Mexico, went 3-for-4 with a walk, a triple, and three RBI. He also threw out a runner at home. Carlos Silva, the catcher who signed a seven-figure bonus in January, went 2-for-5 with a walk and three RBI. Ewing Matos went 2-for-4 with a walk. Second baseman Juan Zapata went 2-for-3 with two walks and his first double. Yilber Herrera, Ariel Castro, and Moises Lopez each walked twice. Alright… to the pitchers. Cristian Hernandez started and gave up four runs on six hits and a walk in three innings. He struck out six batters. Fabian Monsalve came in and gave up nine runs (7 earned) on six hits and four walks in 2 2/3 innings. Jose Ojo came in to get the final out of the sixth inning, but not before hitting one, walking two, and throwing three wild pitches allowing both inherited runners to score. Jose Betancourt gave up three runs on one hit, one hit batter, and five walks in 1 2/3 innings. He struck out three batters. Junior Del Valle got the final out. 4. TRANSACTIONS INF Seth Gray promoted to St. Paul from Wichita RHP Jaylen Nowlin added to Development List for Cedar Rapids C Kyle Schmidt transferred from Cedar Rapids to Fort Myers SAINTS SENTINEL St. Paul 6, Buffalo 2 Box Score Aaron Sanchez took the ball this afternoon for the St. Paul Saints, and while he was on the mound for the Matt Wallner show, there is no denying he put in a good day’s work on his own as well. Working five innings of one-run (unearned) baseball, Sanchez allowed just four hits while striking out and walking one a piece. The game got going with a bang when a Wallner single literally put a hole in the outfield fence. One batter later Kyle Garlick blasted his sixth homer of the year and St. Paul was up 2-0. In the fifth inning Jose Miranda added again when his broken bat flare just over shortstop, scored Alex De Goti. Buffalo answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Wallner erased that with his sixth home run, a seventh inning solo shot. Putting three balls in play today, each of them were absolutely demolished. Once again the Bisons added a run, this time in the seventh inning, but Miranda continued his solid effort with his first home run for the Saints this season. The two-run shot also brought in De Goti and made it a 6-2 final. Miranda had a much-needed strong game with a trio of hits, as did Wallner, while the pair combined to be the only batters with a couple of hits on the day. WIND SURGE WISDOM Wichita 7, Tulsa 2 Box Score Carlos Luna took his turn tonight for the Wind Surge. Working four innings of two-run baseball, all of the damage came on a pair of solo shots. He danced around four hits and a walk while also striking out three. Wichita got behind after a Diego Cartaya solo home run in the second inning, but they quickly answered in the third inning with big production of their own. Yoyner Fajardo crushed his tenth double to drive in Armani Smith and Anthony Prato. Then, with the bases loaded. Yunior Severino clubbed home run number 12 in grand fashion. Fajardo, Brooks Lee, and Alex Isola all crossed the plate ahead of him. The Drillers answered by scoring a single run of their own in the fourth inning, but it hardly wiped away the damage that had been done. Smith then drove in DaShawn Keirsey Jr in the sixth inning to push the Wind Surge lead back to five. Keirsey Jr. was able to pick up a pair of hits tonight as did Smith before being lifted for Will Holland late. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 3, Lansing 2 Box Score The Kernels turned to Kyle Jones for a matinee tilt in Lansing. He worked five innings and allowed just one run on two hits and a walk. The Cedar Rapids pitcher also struck out a trio of Lugnuts batters. After four innings of scoreless baseball the Kernels decided they had enough when the fifth inning struck. Keoni Cavaco blasted a solo shot for his third dinger of the year, and Tanner Schobel followed him with his fourth, another solo shot. Up 2-0, the Kernels were able to withstand the single Lansing run in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Kicking off the eighth inning, Jose Salas ripped his sixth double of the season which plated Noah Miller and made it a 3-1 game. Lansing again answered in the bottom half, but their lone run still left them one short. Schobel was joined by Kala’i Rosario with a pair of hits on the day. Rosario is now at an .870 OPS for the season. MUSSEL MATTERS Postponed Scheduled to play today, the Mighty Mussels were rained out and will be back in action tomorrow evening against St. Lucie. 5. SAINTS SENTINEL St. Paul 4, Nashville 3 (Game 1) Box Score Looking to play a doubleheader yesterday, the weather decided not to cooperate. Instead, the Saints were able to reschedule a twin bill today and Randy Dobnak was on the bump for game one. Dobnak worked a solid 5 1/3 innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four. Josh Winder took over for Dobnak in the 6th and allowed both the inherited runners to score before locking things down the rest of the way to earn the win after recently being optioned. Nashville scored first, but Kyle Farmer continued his strong rehab assignment as he returns from his hit by pitch. Having doubled twice yesterday, he launched a solo shot in the 1st inning today to knot things up. It would seem likely that he returns to the big league roster on Tuesday. Down 3-1 in the bottom of the 6th inning, Michael Helman stepped in and launched a three-run homer to put St. Paul in the lead 4-3. Farmer and Andrew Stevenson came in on the big fly. Helman’s dinger came of the brother of Twins pitcher Louie Varland, Gus Varland. Nashville 7, St. Paul 1 (Game 2) Box Score It was quick revenge for the Sounds as Aaron Sanchez recorded just two outs for the Saints in the second game. He allowed six runs on two hits. Four walks did him in as they came around on a pair of homers. Nashville led 6-0 before St. Paul took their first at bats. Leading off the game for the Saints, Edouard Julien hit his fourth home run of the year to put them on the board. Despite generating five hits on the afternoon, the one run was all they could muster. WIND SURGE WISDOM NW Arkansas 12, Wichita 3 Box Score David Festa took the mound today for Wichita and it wasn’t his best start of the season. Lasting 4 1/3 innings, NW Arkansas touched him up for six runs on eight hits and three walks. He did record five strikeouts on the afternoon. The Wind Surge jumped out to an early lead as they plated two in the 1st inning. Yunior Severino doubled to drive in Alex Isola before DaShawn Keirsey Jr. singled in Severino. They did give both runs back in the bottom half of the inning before Yoyner Fajardo tripled to score Will Holland in the top of the 2nd inning. Fajardo’s triple extended his hitting streak to eleven games. That was as far as Wichita would lead in this one however. Two runs in the 3rd inning were followed by three-spots in the 5th and 6th inning for NW Arkansas. The Naturals added two more in the 8th inning and the 12-3 tally stood as a final. Fajardo racked up a pair of hits as did Keirsey Jr. The six hits for Wichita checked in 13 behind the Naturals 19 for the game. Twins prospect Royce Lewis will begin a rehab assignment this week starting out at Wichita. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 6, South Bend 1 Box Score It was Kyle Jones on the mound today for Cedar Rapids, and he was very sharp for the afternoon. Working five innings of one-run ball, Jones allowed five hits and a single walk while striking out five. The bullpen then worked four scoreless innings while giving up just two hits to close it out. Scoring got underway in the 2nd inning when Misael Urbina grounded out but plated Kala’i Rosario in the process. Ben Ross then doubled in the 3rd inning to score Emmanuel Rodriguez and make it 2-0. After giving up a run back in the 3rd inning, the Kernels put the game away with a four-run 5th inning. Rosario walked with the bases loaded to score Rodriguez before Jose Salas singled in Ross. Urbina then took another bases loaded walk and brought in Noah Cardenas and Willie Joe Garry Jr. ended the inning on a sacrifice fly that allowed Rosario to score again. Cedar Rapids only had six hits for the game, and only Ross recorded a pair of hits, but the Kernels had great plate discipline taking nine walks. MUSSEL MATTERS Dunedin 8, Fort Myers 5 Box Score Tomas Cleto was on the bump today for the Mighty Mussels, and his day got started a bit late after a brief delay. Working 3 2/3 innings, Cleto gave up five hits that turned into three runs. Cleto punched out four while walking three. Ronny Henriquez did get two innings of work in relief, and the Twins prospect will move up to St. Paul shortly. After getting behind 4-0 through the top half of the 5th inning, Fort Myers began to answer. Danny De Andrade singled in Rubel Cespedes to put the Mighty Mussels on the board. It was De Andrade doing damage again in the 7th inning when he took a bases loaded walk to drive in Dalton Shuffield. Andrew Cossetti then followed his lead and walked to score Dylan Neuse and make it a one-run game. Dunedin doubled their tally in the 8th inning and made it an 8-3 contest. While Alec Sayre was able to drive in Ricardo Olivar on a single in the bottom half, that’s where this rally would end. Carlos Aguiar was the only hitter to record multiple hits in the game. 6. TRANSACTIONS RHP Brock Stewart had his contract selected from the St. Paul Saints and joined the Minnesota Twins bullpen. (As a guy who has watched each of his appearances with St. Paul so far on the year, this is a move that could have some good upside. He’s been 96-98 MPH on a big-running fastball, a bottom-dropping changeup at 90, and a frisbee-sweeper in the high-80s all missing bats. His 17.7 K-rate is not a mirage to my eyes) IF/OF Michael Helman was activated from the injured list for the St. Paul Saints, and he had a grand return from his rehab assignment. SAINTS SENTINEL St. Paul 14, Rochester 1 Box Score Led by manager Toby Gardenhire, ten former Red Wings players made the trip to Rochester, New York, this time now part of the St. Paul Saints, for this week's International League series. They obviously felt at home in the confines of Frontier Field, as they decimated their current parent club’s former affiliate 14-1. As a team, they pounded out 17 hits, with catcher Tony Wolters their only player not to record a base hit, though he did draw two walks and score a run. Kyle Garlick led off the scoring in the fourth with a solo home run, and Chris Williams followed later with a two-run double to make it 3-0. Starter Aaron Sanchez kept the Red Wings off the board through five innings, though he battled with his control. In his five innings, he allowed just one hit, walked five, and struck out four to pick up his first win of the season. The Saint's big barrage came in the sixth inning, thanks mostly to a grand slam from Michael Helman, freshly returned to Triple-A from a rehab assignment. He added a two-run bomb in the eighth and finished 3-for-6 with six RBI. Alex Kirilloff joined the homer party with a solo blast in the seventh. The bullpen trio of Cole Sands (1 IP, H), Jordan Balazovic (2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 4 K), and Cody Laweryson (1 IP, BB, 2 K) held the Red Wings in check for the final four innings. Joining Kirilloff (2-for-6, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI), Garlick (3-for-4, 3 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, BB, K, SB), and Helman with multiple hits in the game were Edouard Julien (2-for-6, R, 3 K) and Mark Contreras (4-for-5, 3 R, 2B, 2 RBI). Helman now leads the International League with a 2.400 OPS, with Kirilloff in 2nd, less than 1.000 points behind. WIND SURGE WISDOM Springfield 3, Wichita 12 Box Score I always love to see the Springfield Cardinals facing off against Twins affiliates, as I’ve had the privilege of enjoying several minor league games at their home park, Hammons Field, in the heart of Springfield, Missouri. While tonight's game was in Wichita, where I've yet to visit, it was especially noteworthy for Wind Surge fans as they packed Riverfront Stadium to see the rehabbing Adam Wainwright pitching with the Cardinals. Facing off against him for Wichita in the series opener was rising Twins prospect David Festa. While both pitchers were probably disappointed with their outings, matching each other by allowing three earned runs on seven hits and one walk in 4 1/3 innings apiece, Festa can remember the night fondly as he out-K’d the legendary Cardinals pitcher 7-to-1. While it was a close game while both starters were still on the mound, Wainwright’s exit after Brooks Lee’s second double of the game against him in the fifth was the harbinger of doom for the visiting team. Yunior Severino drilled his first home run of the game two batters later, putting the Wind Surge in front for good 4-3. Severino would add a 438-foot bomb to dead center in the seventh inning, which left his bat at 108 MPH. Wichita tallied seven total runs in that frame, turning it into a blowout. Like the St. Paul Saints, the Wind Surge had 17 hits in the game, getting multi-hit efforts from DaShawn Keirsey Jr. (2-for-5, 3B), Lee (3-for-5, 3 R, 2 2B, RBI), Yoyner Fajardo (3-for-5, R, 2B, 2 RBI), Severino (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI, BB, K), Alex Isola (2-for-4, 2 R, 2B, BB), Will Holland (2-for-4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, K), and David Banuelos (2-for-4, R, 2 RBI). Jose Bravo picked up the win with 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out four. Jordan Brink (1 1/3 IP, K) and Osiris German (1 IP, K) added scoreless outings to close it out. KERNELS NUGGETS West Michigan 0, Cedar Rapids 2 Box Score It was a good old-fashioned pitcher's duel in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday night, with the Kernel’s Kyle Jones facing off against the WhiteCap’s Carlos Pena. Jones bested his counterpart with five scoreless frames compared to four, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out five. Malik Barrington got them through the seventh with two hitless innings, walking one and striking out two. Regi Grace finished the final two innings, also allowing no hits with one walk, picking up two K’s of his own for his second win. The Cedar Rapids lineup was finally able to strike in the bottom of the eighth, after Noah Miller led off the inning with a single. A walk from Noah Cardenas put him in scoring position before Kala’i Rosario drove him in with a single of his own. Tanner Schobel added a run with a sac fly two batters later and the Kernels had a 2-0 lead that was insurmountable in the top of the ninth. Both teams combined for just eight hits, with the edge going to the Kernels 5-3. Schobel had the only extra-base hit for Cedar Rapids, with a double to lead off the second inning. The home team’s pitching staff allowed the visitors just two at-bats with runners in scoring position, and induced three double-play balls. MUSSEL MATTERS Fort Myers 5, Daytona 4 Box Score Left-hander Develson Aria had a rough start to this one, walking the first two hitters of the game and allowing an RBI double and two-run single before he could get out of the first. His lineup got one back for him in the top of the second when reigning Florida State League Player of the Week Andrew Cossetti led off the inning with a double and was driven in by a sac fly from Dalton Shuffield. The game was quiet for the most part in the middle innings, with Daytona extending their lead to 4-1 heading into the eighth. Aria finished 3 2/3 innings, allowing all four runs on five hits and four walks, while striking out five. Ricky Mineo went the next three innings, allowing just one hit, walking one, and striking out four. In the top of the eighth, the Mighty Mussels manufactured a run thanks to Jorel Ortega, who singled, stole second base, and came home on Ricardo Olivar’s base knock a batter later. That set the stage for the final inning. Carlos Aguiar led off the ninth with a double followed by a Shuffield walk to bring the winning run to the plate in Rubel Cespedes. He started a train of RBI singles that included Dylan Neuse and Danny De Andrade that put them out front 5-4. Reliever Gabriel Yanez finished the final 2 1/3 innings for Fort Myers, striking out the side in the eighth, and ending the contest with his fifth strikeout on the game to pick up the win. Overview: Despite losing Louie Varland, Edouard Julien and Matt Wallner to the Twins, the Saints put together a winning week. They started off by winning the first four games against Indianapolis before dropping the final two. 🔥: Andrew Stevenson led the offensive charge with 10 hits, three stolen bases and a home run while playing in all six games. 🔥: Andrew Bechtold also played in every game and totaled six hits which included three doubles and a home run. 🔥: Brent Headrick shoved in his one start before promotion. He struck out eight in five innings, allowing a single run on four hits and a walk. 🔥: Mark Contreras stuff the stat sheet to the tune of eight hits in 25 at-bats, eight hits, five runs, two doubles, five walks and three stolen bases for a slash line of .421/.560/.526 (1.086). 🥶: Kyle Garlick was brought back to the Twins after striking out three times and failing to get a hit in 10 at-bats He didn't earn it with his recent performance, but the Twins needed an outfielder. What's Next: Home cooking against Scranton/WB (7-8). While the forecast may not be great, there are plenty of fun ballpark activities including fireworks on Friday night. Double-A: Wichita Wind Surge (Week: 3-3) Overall: 5-4, 2.0 games back in the Texas League North. Overview: Yoyner Fajardo continues to be an early-season surprise as he leads the team with 12 hits, four stolen bases and a .333 batting average while playing solid left field. Brooks Lee will be the draw (as long as he is on the team), you can see his week below. David Festa wasn't as great as his debut, but there's no reason to believe the Twins won't be able to use him in their future. 🔥: Yunior Severino only played three games, but got four hits in 12 at-bats and hit two home runs. He struck out in six of the at-bats he didn't get a hit, so there's still improvement needed, but you appreciate the at-bats that turn out well. 🤔: Carlos Luna is new to the organization, so when you strike out 10 in 5 2/3 innings in your organizational debut, you need to be recognized. But when you turn around and allow four hits and two runs while only recording two outs in your next outing, you don't get the fire emoji. 🥶: Will Holland got his first hit of the season but went 0-for-12 for the week (and is 1-for-20 on the season). He has game-changing speed... but it's really tough to use on the bath paths if you can't get on base. Holland was the college teammate of Edouard Julien (and Holland was the higher-regarded prospect.) What's Next: A trip to Tulsa (6-3). Only one game separates the two teams. Arkansas is currently in first place at 7-2. High-A: Cedar Rapids Kernels (Week: 2-3) Overall: 5-3, 0.5 games back in the Midwest League West. Overview: This is going to be the easiest team to follow because it has so many prospects. If you don't see their names here, it's because you can see how they did for the week down in the Prospect Summary. 🔥: Kyle Jones might have taken the loss, but that's why "pitcher wins" are a silly stat. More on Jones below... way below. 🔥: Ben Ross was drafted with a reputation as a hitter. And that's what he's done. Nine hits in 20 at-bats this past week including two doubles and a home run. He strikes out too much, but you'll take the bad with the good, if the good is a 1.155 OPS. Drafted as a shortstop, his time there is going to be limited on this team as he's already been pushed to the infield corners. (Three times at third base; once at first base.) 🥶: The Twins acquired Alejandro Hidalgo for Gio Urshela and aggressively assigned the 19-year-old to High-A where he is the youngest pitcher on the staff. Hidalgo struggled in his start this week. He walked six and hit a batter while only recording five outs. He's always struggled with walks, but not that much. Maybe it was just too cold... yeah, that's what we're going with. 🥶: Kala'i Rosario was impressive in his changes with the Twins this spring training, but this week was not good. Only one hit in 17 at-bats. No walks, four strikeouts. The hit went for a double, so it wasn't a complete waste of a week. There are better days ahead for the young outfielder. 😭: Connor Prielipp didn't pitch this week. It's been reported that he's seeking a doctor's opinion on his surgically repaired left elbow after feeling discomfort during his debut. He will have more testing and evaluation over the next few weeks. What's Next: A home series against West Michigan (6-3) who sits in a tie atop the East Division. Low-A: Ft. Myers Mighty Mussels (Week: 3-3) Overall: 5-4, three-way tie for first in the Florida State League West. Overview: There will likely always be a storyline here because even though the Mighty Mussels don't have top prospects, they have the newest guys in the organization and some are sure to impress. Oh, and rehab guys. There was plenty going on this week. 🔥: After struggling his debut, Cory Lewis got back on track with a eight-strikeout performance. A home run and a walk were blemishes, but a huge improvement over the week before. 🔥: Zebby Matthews has been a dude so far. It's not often you can outperform a five-inning, three-hit, seven-strikeout scoreless debut, but Zebby outdid himself by missing working five perfect innings with only a walk. Definitely a candidate for Pitcher of the Week, Matthews probably will move from Florida to hea.. er, Iowa if he keeps this up. 🔥: Carlos Aguiar has been lost in the mix of big-name international prospects over the last handful of years, but maybe this can be his breakout year. The all-around numbers aren't great, but he's already hit two home runs. You'd like to see him improve his eye and selectivity at the plate (he struck out 66 times versus only nine walks in low-A last year), so the ten strikeouts so far this year aren't great, but the three walks has his OBP over .300. 🥶: After Dalton Shuffield was drafted in the 10th round last year, he was aggressively moved from Fort Myers to Cedar Rapids to St. Paul and performed admirably, posting a .917 OPS. He hasn't been bad by any means, but a 2-for-12 stretch with six strikeouts in his first full week in low-A this year isn't going to get him quickly promoted. He's been pounding the ball into the ground, which is unlike him... so things should straighten out with him eventually. 😏: Jorge Polanco has been a giant question mark, but now he's finally getting back around to playing in full games. Three hits in 13 at-bats isn't great for a big-leaguer at low-A, but it's about getting reps and being healthy. The offense in Minnesota needs a jolt... and Polanco may be able to provide that eventually... 😏: ...and if he can't, maybe Alex Kirilloff can. Kirilloff also has only three hits in 12 at-bats. But he's hit a home run and has drawn three walks to go with his three strikeouts. 😏: I've long felt that Josh Winder and Jhoan Duran would make a nasty back of the bullpen. Is that the path the Twins will go with the rehabbing Winder, who pitched 2 2/3 innings over two appearances? He struck out four and allowed three hits. What's Next: A home series against Jupiter (5-4) might help alleviate the logjam that is the FSL. Six of the 10 teams are currently 5-4. Last year's 7th-round pick has had a great start to the season for the Kernels. With an aggressive placement at High-A. Jones has answered the bell. In his start against Quad Cities this week, Jones allowed only a single run on three hits and a walk in six innings. He struck out four. He was saddled with the loss, but the 23-year-old gets bonus points for being assigned to a harder environment than many of the other 2022 pitchers. HITTER - Emmanuel Rodriguez, Cedar Rapids. There is so much not going right for the 20-year-old - he's walking back to the dugout after striking out almost two and a half times per game - and he's not walking nearly as much as he did last year. But when E-Rod is touching the ball... well, touching is the wrong word. Because he's assaulting it. In four games, he hit three home runs (including a monster walk-off) and drove in ten runs. By the time teams see him for a second time, they're going to wish they didn't have to. Who would have been your picks? Any early season surprises or disappointments? 8. A Michigan native, Kyle Jones is a four-year senior from the University of Toledo. A starting pitcher for the Rockets, Jones was a workhorse throwing 91 1/3 innings this past season. He posted a 4.24 ERA alongside 11.3 K/9. He became the third pitcher Minnesota selected in the 2022 MLB draft, and was noted as a high-character guy by a few different people I reached out to. I caught up with Jones after his selection to ask a few questions and introduce him to Twins Territory. Twins Daily: Working as a starter this season for Toledo, what does your repertoire look like and what is your best pitch? Kyle Jones: As a starter this year for Toledo, I worked with a four-seam fastball, spike curveball, and splitter. This summer I have been working on adding a cutter to my arsenal as well. My best pitch has always been my curveball since it has been hard with late break. My splitter played pretty well this year in spots and I’m excited to gain confidence with it. TD: How do you set yourself up to attack hitters? What type of pitcher would you describe yourself as and what goes into your preparation? KJ: I try to get ahead in the count as early as possible to reduce walks and let my offspeed work. I see myself as a pitchability guy since I can get swings and misses on my offspeed and fill up the strike zone. I stick to my weekly routine as much as possible to make sure that I am ready to go whenever I get on the mound. This includes mobility, conditioning, lifting, and a weekly bullpen. TD: The 114 strikeouts across just 91 1/3 innings are more than impressive, but then paired with just 25 walks, your ability to command the zone looks even better. What do you think can separate you as a pitcher in professional baseball? KJ: I think that being able to throw three pitches for strikes without walking many will be a separator for me professionally. I also think that being routine-oriented can help me stay healthy and consistent throughout the season. TD: Minnesota is trending towards an organization that heavily employs advanced analytics. What is your background with using the data and incorporating it into the way you pitch? KJ: I love having access to analytics whenever I have the chance. In the past, I have done pitch design sessions and training with Rapsodo which has been great for me to learn about my arsenal and metrics. Being at a mid-major, we do not always have access to Trackman data during the season, but I try to use it whenever I have the chance. I am really looking forward to diving deeper into the analytical part of pitching and am excited that the Twins will be able to provide that. TD: What do you know about the Minnesota Twins? Have you ever been to Target Field? KJ: Growing up in Detroit, I had watched the Tigers play the Twins, but have never been to Minnesota or Target Field. I know they have been playing some good baseball recently and am excited to contribute to the organization! TD: What is something you want Twins Territory to know about you as a person or player? KJ: I just want to say that I can’t wait to get down to Fort Myers and get going with the Twins. I also want to give a shoutout to my family for all the love and support throughout my career as well as to all my coaches who have gotten me to where I am today.
