Simmons will certainly be available on a one year deal again, for cheaper. He can't possibly hit worse than he did this year, right??

His defense numbers at Baseball Ref. say you are wrong; you are blaming him for a team that is under performing as whole and while too many think the Minor League Rookies are some sort of miracle cure.

I agree with this post. I think Astudillo is the classic the 27th or 28th man on a 26 man roster that you stash at AAA to be called up as injury insurance until he runs out of options, and then you sign to a series of one year minor league contracts unless he finds a better offer someplace else.

Nick Gordon has a stiff headwind to have any MLB career right now so I'm sure a Danny Santana career looks pretty good to him about now. Here's hoping at the very least, he can stay healthy in the personal life side of things. He's certainly been through a heck of a lot with the digestive tract issues and the bad case of COVID.

I don't see it happening and this lack of multiple conferences would be unlike any of the other top 3 sports. Baseball enjoys a lot of competition right now, though a little less in recent years, but I think this design would see an even greater loss of competition.

I am a die-hard, tried-and-true Twins fan forever. This season is proof.
That being said, I prefer to watch National League ball. I like small-ball, with the bunting, stealing, pinch hitting and batting, all the strategy and tactics, etc.
Can we please, please, please, not have a universal DH? I thoughouly enjoy having a differentiation of styles and 2 leagues. It is history. It is competition; it is rivalry in itself (World Series and All-star game and inter-league play).
If people want to modernize baseball, the first thing I am in favor of is an electronic strike zone.
Sorry if this is off topic. I should probably start my own post for this.
I do appreciate your love for rivalry though. Keep fantasizing!

I said this to you in a thread, but the Twins are in the same time zone as Chicago and Milwaukee.
Cubs and Sox are already heated rivals. It would make things even worse if they were in the same division.
I'd make it 6 divisions, though ... and you can still have 12 teams in the playoffs ... 2 from each division.
6 division as I'd do it: NE - Boston, NYY, NYM, Phila, Balt; SE - WashDC, Atl, Mia, Rays, Reds; MW-east - Cleveland, T'ronto, Pitts, Detroit, ChiSox (although that makes the ChiSox the only team in the central time zone); MW-west - Milwaukee, Cubs, MN, StL, KC; SW - Houston, TX, CO, AZ, SD; West - LAA, LAD, SF, Oak, Sea

As a long time forum resident/owner, I've lost track of how many Joe Bensons there have been over the past 20 years (ie. players that were released to great internet outrage, only to amount to absolutely nothing in MLB, if they ever even got there).

In his last 10 games, going into this afternoon's contest, he's given us 47 PA worth of .947 OPS, built on a .308 BA, 5 walks, and a couple of homers. That's small sample size territory, but not cherry picked particularly, to suggest he's on an all-star track for now.  Please keep it up, Josh!

That is a pretty solid list. I guess I don't see them getting rid of Garver just yet as he is only two years removed from a silver slugger there and catchers that can hit are very difficult to find.  Even if his D is sub par his bat can still be potent.  Too many years of cheap control and just too much value to give up on him IMO.  If you want to see a really bad hitting catcher watch Rortvedt at the plate.  I think Mitch is a long shot to get traded at this point.

Also not sure on Duffey.  He might come around yet.  He seems a little out of shape and missing his spots to start the year.  If he gains a little more gas on the ball and sharpens things up I think he could rebound but we will see.

Everyone else is on one year deals so moving them would be prudent if they are out of it which seems like a near certainty right now.  Robles and Colome would be addition by subtraction IMO.  Yes they have been that bad.  But those guys and Happ won't fetch much on the market.  I would hate to see Pineda go but he is the one guy they could maybe get a good return on.

Like Brock I think they would find a team maybe even a National league team that would be interested in Cruz.  Probably a team that would want the inside track to sign him next year.  I don't think he would be in the Twins plans for next year given the price he is likely to command so getting something would be better than nothing and if multiple teams are interested they could get a good player in return.

Simmons won't have much value either so even if the Twins trade everyone of these guys the return likely won't move the needle much.  If they traded Rogers, Buxton or Berrios then they could net a good return but hard to say if they are willing to take a risk like that or not.

I agree with most of this, except that I believe the chance of Cruz being traded is close to 100%. No matter if the return is good or not, he'll almost surely be moved. There aren't many teams that need a DH but literally every single playoff team wants Cruz on their roster, if only for pinch-hitting duty.

Why is requesting a "subtle yet very significant update that honors and reflects the team’s players and its fans from different backgrounds" a false sense of need?

Inclusion is a very real need. As I read Crutchfield's statements, he is using that as an opportunity for a discussion on what that looks like, not a condemnation on the existing logo.

Nobody said that the logo was offensive.

Crutchfield never mentioned being offended about the logo or the logo itself being offensive. In fact, he said that he has "always loved Ray Barton’s original ‘Minnie and Paul’ logo design" in his statement.

He provided updated version of the logo he provided on his Facebook page. In addition to being a seamless transition, the Black person on the St. Paul side not only provides a level of diversity to the logo, but it could also serve to honor Roy Campanella who became the first African-American to play in the American Association when he joined the Saints in 1948.

There is certainly room for both in this game.

The sport honors Jackie Robinson one day a year by having every player wearing 42 or black and white jerseys. Some teams choose to use Negro League uniforms on turn-back-the-clock days.

    This is imagery.

You can have both discussions about how images are perceived AND work toward actionable changes.

Again, no one said the logo was offensive.

Still, we know that former owner Calvin Griffith said 'I'll tell you why we came to Minnesota. It was when I found out you only had 15,000 blacks here. Black people don't go to ball games" and while he was making that decision, he was likely deciding on logos and branding. The 1961 designed logo could have been a reflection of that mindset -- or it could have just been an misguided reflection of the state's demographics at that time.

Either way, it does not take much for an organization to reflect on that past and that future.

Baseball's audience is overwhelmingly white. According to Bloomberg in 2019, only 9% of the television-viewing audience is black. I cite James Clear's Atomic Habits a lot because of the main points he makes in his book is that small changes can have significant impacts later on. If making small change to the logo could help improve the perception of the organization to more people, it would be foolish not to take it into consideration. There is A LOT more that needs to be done to grow the game in that regard, to be sure, but making small strides when possible should be on the table.

It may seem like a minor thing to us, but the impact could be felt down the road.

Finally, just to reiterate, there are many reasons to consider making changes to a logo but let's be clear here and understand that no one is outright offended by this logo. That is not a part of the conversation.

The charm of Minnie and Paul is, honestly, that it's a dated art style.

So I suppose it's due for a tweak.

Big meh. It's like their 3rd logo anyway. Changing Minnie and Paul is about as controversial as Geico adding another spokesman.

Hit the bullseye - the MLB came up with all of these safety nets so that they could play through a clubhouse spread of this virus. And now, instead of using the fire escape they built, they're panicking and making things worse.

    Know what shoulda happened?

Every team should have had an entire 30-man "B Squad" that practiced and played simulated games in a bubble. Positive test on the "A Squad"? They're all subbed out, and - in the case of the Cardinals, for example - the B Squad flies to Milwaukee and plays the Brewers. You could have a lot of good AAA guys who could stay sharp that way. And the season could roll on.

Yeah, I'm sure there would be some issues with service time and all the money and 40-man roster stuff would have to have been hashed out. But honestly this would have been the best idea.

I don't disagree with you at all if this is game 20 we're talking about. I think to throw Rooker or Kirilloff in on Opening Day for what could be a very brief absence by either player would be a mistake. Maybe less so if this team could afford them the acclimation process or had 162 games to work with.

Sorry, there is not little to worry about. So maybe if you fall out of the range of the critical danger zones age or health-wise, you are still in contact with many other people in your daily life who aren't. This is where the greatest spread has been where I am in Hong Kong- family or business gatherings. It is far better to over-react at this critical time, than minimize the danger. It's colleagues, parents, grandparents, anyone in your social circle.

You did qualify your response, but please, there is no one who has no reason to worry, and to not be protective and proactive.
