Rosario was so sought after at the trade deadline that the Braves traded the desiccated corpse of Pablo Sandoval to get him. 🙄

no team in the division lost 90 games because when 4 of the 5 teams are all on the same level of suck, they play pretty competitive baseball against each other.

This is not a reaction to yesterday's game, or the last week, which is why much broader statistics were used to make the case that Rosario has been a sub par contributor dating back to last year.

And no, if Kepler would've done the same the article would not have been published since, A: Kepler is under contract for several years, not a non-tender candidate in the offseason; and B: Kepler was arguably the team's most valuable player last year, Rosario probably not in the top ten.

For your talk about "cherry-picking categories" (I literally shared his entire Statcast profile, which is almost all below average, and fWAR which is an all-consuming performance metric) you sure seem to be zeroing in on non-existent argument here and ignoring the one that was actually made. This ain't about the "eye test." Look at the numbers. They speak for themselves.

I don't think this take is unreasonable, but let's say they brought in Duffey in the 6th and he held the lead. They were almost certainly going to have to go to Alcala eventually, and if he blew the lead later in the game, now you've wasted Duffey in a loss and he may not be available tonight. By bringing in Alcala in the 6th instead, you're giving him a chance to prove himself in a high leverage spot, and while he gave up the lead, at least no other high-end bullpen arms are wasted in a loss.

Now, if this was a playoff game, I wouldn't advocate for putting in a young, unproven arm in that situation, but this game was by no means a "must win" in my mind.

nothing bad happened tonight.  the twins lost because one of the best hitters in baseball hit a timely homerun while the bats were stymied by probably the best pitcher in baseball right now.

Is that a result of the bullpen game though? If Maeda pitches that day and goes 6 strong, the offense still failed 4 or 5 times with RISP and no outs. We should have scored 7 or 8 runs in that game but instead had to empty the bullpen because the offense once again scored a few runs early and then mailed it in.

Back ends of bullpens are nasty everywhere you look this year, but the Twins are getting absolutely smothered by some of the worst relievers on some of the worst teams in baseball. The result is exactly what we've seen which is scoring a few runs early off the starter and then riding the bullpen the rest of the game to a narrow victory. It's not really an issue against good teams like Cleveland as we saw in game one but there's simply no excuse to rely on that strategy against teams like Kansas City.

Sorry Mike, I have to disagree with you here. Poor performances and ravenous injuries have been abundant this year. And the Twins have had more than their share as well. But they have won 20 games because of their depth.

Bailey is out after one solid start. Hill looked good again tonight. Odorizzi had a freak injury his last time out. Berrios may be settling in. Maeda has been great and Dobnak continues to be very solid. The pen has been outstanding, even with some injuries. The bullpen games are not something I want or enjoy. But they have largely turned out in the Twins favor thus far. Pineda is back next week, and hopefully Oddo is back relatively soon.

The depth the FO has put in place has allowed the team to perform as well as they have. I've been 50/50 on someone like Duran getting a shot instead of a bullpen game. Part of that is just excitement to see him. But he and others are really just playing for development and emergency. Thus far, there hasn't been a "break glass" moment. Hopefully there won't be.

I think the depth they built up has proven itself.

Now, I have no clue how the trade market will look in the coming week. But were I to speculate...unless there is more to worry about with Oddo than we've been told...I would think a CF option like Pillar on the cheap and a bullpen option like last year's Romo deal would make the most sense. IMO.

On Bailey: Pitchers are dropping like flies across the league right now. I'm guessing Rocco wants to use his depth while he has instead of when he has to. I don't think it's a coincidence this move was announced after the Twins won last night. Had they lost, I imagine Bailey would've started. Rocco is a very rest/longevity-focused manager.

On Openers: Just think of this as a Smeltzer/Thorpe start, but you're trying to avoid having them pitch to Lindor/Ramirez/etc more than twice. In that sense, I like the strategy.

But, I do think openers for day games puts a reliever in a particularly weird situation. These guys typically pitch at 9-10 pm, so asking them to be comfortable starting a 1 pm game might throw off their routine. I'm sure that wouldn't bother some guys at all, but I have to believe some would be thrown off by it (though I doubt they'd admit it).

Yeah, Minnesota teams should be taking the lead right now and it looks like the Twins are more than willing. I've done my fair share of Pohlad complaining in the past, but, fantastic work lately guys. Keep it up.

I think we all remember Jim Pohlad's famous comment about total system failure after the 2016 season. That was not just an idle comment. He took seriously the need to make changes, and so he initiated a complete restructuring of the entire franchise. It is easy to become impatient, but keep in mind that it takes a number of years to implement a top-to-bottom change in personnel and philosophy in a franchise and even longer for the results to be seen at the major league level. We are only three years in so it's still early. Even though I don't know the inner workings of the organization I get the strong feeling that Derek Falvey knows what he is doing. I share Mr. Schwerzler's optimism and snide remarks such as those above do not dissuade me.

I'd have a hard time seeing Bailey be so good he'd be worth a QO, but there just seems like a lot of hand wringing for what looks to be a 5th starter. Hill on the other hand is a top of the rotation arm when healthy, if he's not healthy, well it was well worth the $3M to find out from my perspective.

But yes, this is all predicated on the Twins still swinging a trade for a higher ceiling, hopefully longer-term arm, which I am still just as hopeful for. They still only have three starters for opening day, so I don't think they're done. Ownership and the front office will still be well aware that these moves will not scrub any egg from their face, face they'll surely still want to save coming off of last season's fan building momentum.
