gman reacted to roger in Well-Rounded Julien Talks Approach, Defense and Unique Path to Pro Ball
What a fantastic report, Seth, thanks.
Julien seems to me to be a prospect who not only can be special, but more important probably will.  Love that OBP and his speed.  Like Martin, he is an infielder who could be a great outfielder.
A question, Seth, and an observation.  First the question.  Can this kid have a real chance of putting up .400 OBP throughout his career?

Both Martin and Julien are versatile defensively, fast and great contact hitters.  They both are likely to be better defensively than Arraez, also, much faster and most important healthier.  I absolutely love Luis and his role with the Twins.  But with Martin AND Julien almost ready, I could understand including Luis in a package for a very good, young starting pitcher.  Doubt much will happen in the few weeks before the season gets going.  But it may make sense come July, assuming they are playing come July.

This is written as if Martin has played 3-4 seasons in the minors. "Coaches are trying to get back his lost power. He's played over 12 months with a wrist injury." What is that? You can't reasonably expect to compare college stats to a Double A minor league season.

Refreshing to hear some news from spring training, even if it is not MLB players.   Hopefully that will change very shortly, until then let's hear about these kids and prospects.

“We’re still evaluating him, to be honest,” Hassan said. “I feel really confident in his ability to play the outfield right now. He has real skill in the infield. He has the ability to make some plays. He played a lot of shortstop last year. If we had to say where his focus is going to be, especially early in camp, it’ll be on the infield and (we’ll) continue to refine him defensively.”
That's from Gleeman's article on Martin today on The Athletic. I find it interesting that they're still seemingly very devoted to keeping him on the dirt. It makes sense that if you think he's already good enough to move to the OF you'd work on the IF stuff and see if you can't get him to stick there I guess. Later in the article Hassan is quoted as saying that they're focusing on him being a SS still, but he'll have the ability to move around the IF. So the Twins seemingly haven't given up on him being a SS. I find that interesting. Not good or bad, just interesting.

I enjoyed this article except for this:
"It’s not a lack of strength but a conscious choice to give up contact quality in favor of avoiding the strikeout, and that can be changed — he certainly hasn’t always hit this way," says Law. "I absolutely believe the Twins are already addressing this."
If the Twins try to change his ability to get on base in favor of more power, he doesn't need to turn into a strikeout machine either. I believe the Twins tried to mess with Buxton at the plate and that didn't work. Sometimes it's best to leave things/players alone. Be grateful yo have an on-base machine and use it to your advantage. Rod Carew wasn't a HR hitter. Luis Arraez isn't a HR hitter. Take what a player is good at and use it. Don't mess with it. I'd be happy if he hits .300, gets on base at a .400 clip and hits 10-15 HRs.

Can't a 23 year old's arm strengthen? It seems odd that we keep hearing that neither Lewis nor Martin has what it takes to stick at SS, yet we can't keep stockpiling utility players at 2B. Do the Twins have the kind of coaches who can tell a prospect like Martin "Hey, SS for this organization is yours if you want it." And then make a plan to help him claim it.
Gleeman just wrote an article about how Corey Koskie once rose to the challenge to claim 3B. I can't see why this can't happen here again at SS, particularly on a team that isn't going anywhere in the standings in the near future.

It sure would be nice if Lewis or Martin (or both) could be a middle of the pack shortstop (defensively.)  That would solve a lot of concerns.

If he doesn't end up at SS long term I think 3B is a good fit. With the shift we are seeing more expected from defense at 3B and less at 2B.

Akil Baddoo and Jose Miranda were both left unprotected in the December 2020 Rule 5 draft, and both were rumored to get selected.  So every single MLB could have snagged Miranda and they whiffed.  Twins got lucky.
Looking forward to seeing Miranda rise up and take his shot in the big leagues this year.

Like so many Twins prospects this year I guess he will have to prove the bat and plate discipline are for real at AAA and then likely have to wait for an injury to get his shot at a spot on the big club.  He was a joy to watch last year. One of the few bright spots in an injury riddled minor league season.  Looking forward to him being a dangerous bat in the lineup for years to come.

We never really know how the MLB career for a prospect will work out, but there is no reason not to be excited about Miranda.  What a year.  I wish he had gotten an MLB taste the end of last year, but that is just being picky.  The lack of position is a real issue.  Does he go to LF with Kiriloff at 1B?  How will Larnach look this year - still shell shocked or ready to assert himself?  With Buxton and Kepler that only leaves LF for the two of them.  DH is Sano, 2B is a traffic jam with Arraez, Polanco, Gordon and 3B is Donaldson.  I am sure he will not be at SS.  And yet, I really want to see him play and not rest on the bench.

So because they both struggled in their rookie year they have no future value? That's the boldest of bold takes right there.
Mike Trout had an 89 OPS+ his rookie year. Probably should've cut that guy, huh?

I'm thinking we should lookup the schedule for the nearest high school baseball team and go watch some games. See some players who are playing for the game instead of the money. Make a contribution of an amount equal to what you would have spent going to a Twins game or the professional team. Have a good time. Be sure to bring an extra coat.

I agree with the statement that Robertson or Beckham on the Roster would be less than ideal. I also agree with Dman on the Palacios choice as I have made similar comments to other to other discussion topics. Palacios is rated as the best infield defender and best infield arm in the system, as well as showing power last season.

I see him as the Twins pitching prospect with the highest ceiling.  Only question will be health and whether or not his body will allow him to achieve it.  Should he be ranked higher?  Should his health concerns push him a bit lower?  Good questions.

His story reads a bit like Bailey Ober's except that he has a plus fastball.  Ober was dominant through the levels but could not stay healthy either until his MLB debut. So I wouldn't give up on him just yet.  He is throwing harder and that might have something to do with how he injured himself.  Have to make sure those mechanics line up and use those legs for torque not over compensate with the arm.  For Canterino it just seems like a matter of the arm holding up and he will be a viable starter likely better than Bailey Ober.  He just needs to stay within himself and stay healthy.  I don't think he has been hurt before last year so I bet he will make changes to ensure he is healthy this coming year.

That looks like a pretty rugged starting team. The middle infield would be weak defenders, Larnach starting in Minnesota instead of St Paul. The rotation period.
I could easily see quite a bit of shuffling before the season got to old. But I don't see anything better either ready to start the season. They'll need a steady bus service from the minors.
