Too many 30+ out of options guys on the 40-man. Coulombe is a “no” for me and probably Cotton, as well.

If I'm the Twins, I don't look to trade Garver. I certainly would take the phone calls, but there is no reason to trade him just to trade him. He hasn't caught a ton. The Twins take care of their catchers. So yeah, unless they get offered an MLB #1 or #2 starter (or a prospect with that potential, and more), keep him and be happy about it!

Garver is a solid #1 catcher and should be kept. Jeffers and Rortvedt have to show they can hit in the bigs consistently.

For the people that are upset at his age or not being a past MLB player or MLB level coach, who cares?  If he knows what he is doing age does not matter, and maybe he lacked the physical ability but knew how to get the best out of what he had.  Also, being good at something does not mean you know how to coach someone.  Teaching is a skill, knowing how to connect to different people in different ways to get them to understand is a skill.  Some of the best players of all time tried to coach or manage and failed because they had no clue to teach people how to be good because it just came natural to them.  Even if it did not come natural to them they still had no clue to get everyone to see the same picture.
Think of when you play Pictionary, sometimes people will draw a picture and their partner has no clue what it is.  The drawer has two options draw something else that will connect to the partner, or keep pointing at and drawing the same picture, often larger.  The first option is more likely to get the partner to guess the correct answer and see the picture you want.  However, not every person can think of a second picture.  The best coaches/teachers, can tell when the person being coached or taught is not seeing the picture with the first type of attempt, so they change up the picture to get the person to see it.  Good coaches know how to change up approach with different players to get the most out of them.

I believe many on this site tend to overlook just how good Luis Arraez has been.
    Over 3 seasons, age 22-24, Arraez has a career .313 avg / .374 obp / .777 ops
That's a really damn good major league hitter, that is still developing.

Time will tell for sure, but I always get the impression that when it comes to the shortstop position, most pundits and fans only see the players' defense as a pass/fail proposition. But it isn't black or white, there's plenty of scenarios where a below average defender is acceptable. I mean statistically, half of the starting shortstops in the league are going to be below average.
No one wants Jorge Polanco as a starting shortstop, but the team did win 100 freakin' games with him at the position. It's not ideal but it's not like it's going to destroy the season. Obviously, aim for higher quality defense than Polanco, but I don't want the team to get so caught up in the defensive side of things that they don't regularly put the optimal offense into the lineup.

    Nice article.
Other than locking up Buxton, there is no reason the Twins should be spending big $$$ this offseason. With the loss of Berrios and Maeda, 2022 will be a tryout camp for the starting rotation. It makes more sense for the Twins to be active in free agency during the 2022-2023 offseason.
I especially don't think they should be locking up a SS long-term when they have some legit possible in-house candidates.

My favorite memory was sitting with my dad at game 7 in 1987. I was 15 years old back then....What a great World Series and so much fun! We sat behind Lou Brock about 10 rows behind first base. Watching Hrbek throw his arm up after getting the last out was a memory I'll never forget.

Not to bag on Rooker, but what he brings to the table is exactly what the Twins already have too much of--a bat-first corner guy whose biggest strength is plus power. What the Twins need from their position players is more guys who can run and make contact and also play defense.
I was thinking that combining the strengths or Arraez and Gordon would make a wonderful tenth starter--Gordon's speed and ability to play some shortstop and center field combined with Arraez' OBP and bat-to-ball skills (plus some defensive versatility) make for a fine player who could fill in at several positions.
Rooker hit nine homers in 213 plate appearances and somehow only drove in 16 runs. I know that RBI is an opportunity stat, but that number seems incredibly inefficient. There is probably some market for him and I would urge the team to trade him.

This is why the only position player spot I want us making a FA signing in is SS. we have options to fill out what can be an excellent lineup. 4th OF could be a competition between Celestino and Martin, both of whom can play CF effectively and would provide superior D in the corners if they slot over there. both are RH, which makes them good options to back up Kepler and Kirilloff.
I'd like to see 13 guys at the position slots:
    OF: Buxton, Kepler, Kirilloff, Celestino/Martin
    Corner INF: Donaldson, Sano, Miranda
Middle INF: FA SS, Polanco, Arraez, Gordon
    Catcher: Garver, Jeffers
Then you mix it up at DH with Donaldson, Arraez, Miranda, any OF that needs a day off in the field, etc, Kirilloff can get some time at 1B and give Miranda time out in the OF.
Should be enough ABs to go around. Larnach and whichever of Celestino/Martin doesn't win the battle in spring training are the first two OF bats to call up, and Martin could move around into the infield if needed. Maybe you let Gordon be depth in AAA (he has an option left) and make sure you have a better defender backing up SS. There's room for Miranda when you dump Jake Cave & Astudillo's ABs.

Good afternoon Twins fans and welcome back to the second to last Game Thread for 2021. Apologies for the early post but I had to boat over to a nearby lodge on Elbow Lake (just north of Lake Vermillion) in order to get internet access to post the game thread today. I'm staying with some old high school buddies at their cabin and to say we are remote is an understatement...Gotta throw out a special thank you to the resort owner who let me tap into their wifi to post this...thanks again Elbow Lake Lodge!
Well, here we are at the end of the season. This year didn't go as well as any of us thought but we still had a lot of fun on the game threads. I would like to thank all of you for the humor, snappy conversations and banter. I'm somewhat partial to the Game Threads and find its a lot like sitting next to educated fans during the game. It's great to get everyone's opinion and thoughts about the team.
I'm excited for 2022. I think we will probably be better than we think and not as bad as we think...does that mean we will be a .500 team? Not really sure but I think we are better than a .500 team in 2022.
I'd love to stay longer and write a more prolific game thread opener but it's overcast with a light mist. The walleyes are calling my name and probably ready to eat the slew of leeches I have ready to go in my bait bucket. I'll try to get score updates and post from my phone but cell service is only one bar at best around here.
Thanks again everyone for all of the game thread fun this year. Next year will be better! Trust me! I'm a fisherman and never lie or exaggerate.
