I'd argue the Maeda trade has been an unquestioned win to this point.

The team scoring 14 runs after falling behind 10-0 shows that the team hasn't quit, at least from an offensive perspective. This is an abysmal pitching staff. At this point it seems like pick your poison and the question becomes less, "which guy gets us out of this jam" and more "which guy would you like to give up three runs in an inning today?"

I'd say just the opposite about the hitters. They came back from 10-0 to make it 10-6. They scored 6 in the 8th to come back to a 13-12 game. They scored 2 more in the 9th. The hitters never quit the game. They also came back in a few other games in the past week.

I saw that José Miranda was removed from the game after being hit by a pitch. I hope it's nothing serious?! 😬
Honestly, his huge breakout is such a bright spot in this horrible season, it would just be heartbreaking if he got injured...

Yeah, I mean this seems to be the key.
If the Twins plan to compete in 2022, I don't see how subtracting Berrios and/or Buxton will accomplish that. Even if the return is stellar, we likely wouldn't be seeing any help from that haul until 2023-24.
Essentially if the Twins trade Berrios, it seems to me they're waving the white flag on 2022 and expect to compete with core of Kirilloff, Royce Lewis, and Balazovich in a few years and they're going all in with those guys. Meanwhile Josh Donaldson will spend his last 2 years of his big contract floundering for a rebuilding club.
Really tough spot for the Twins.

I thought it was a fine trade at the time. And the front office is definitely going to miss from time to time... but...
Literally all they've done in the past 12 months is miss and it's usually not only a miss but a spectacular miss. That inspires no confidence in their future decisions.

Even misjudging him can be explained away but yes, it's problematic at the very least.
But then the waiver wire loss so early into the season when the MLB club was flat-out pathetic... that's when the situation became inexcusable in my eyes.

The trade made sense but obviously the Twins misjudged Shaun Anderson. That's problematic.

I was disappointed we traded Wade Jr. I liked his collection of skills and thought he would be a good 4th outfielder at worst. Glad he's getting a chance with the Giants who by the way, have the best record in baseball.

I've actually flip flopped on this situation.  I wanted the team to focus on Berrios because he was the safer sign.  I still think he is the safer sign, but Buxton is that game changer that the team needs.  That any team needs.  I'm not worried about him being the next David Ortiz, I'm worried about him becoming a healthy Byron Buxton.  When he's on the field, the team is so much better.  These types of players simply don't come around very often.
I'm with @USAFChief in that expecting Buxton to sign for $15M guaranteed is lunacy.  I like the idea of incentives to trigger a bigger payday.  I can understand why Buxton wouldn't like that, but if he's betting on himself, then a mindset of these being achievable isn't unreasonable.
What this team can't do is let him walk.  If they can't sign him, they need to trade him.  That's not my preferred option, but it's a lot better than getting a comp pick for him.

    Couldn't agree more, Nick.
Buxton is a game changer. He should have been signed long ago, but that mistake will only be compounded if they don't get him under contract now, when circumstances offer a unique opportunity.
How often does a player like this come along?
BTW, we're paying JA Happ $8, Pineda $10. Donaldson $23.
The idea that Buxton will accept, or should accept, $15m guaranteed is lunacy. Much less the laughable offer on the table.

As pointed out, they have graduated 2-3 legit ML players this year. Put those three back in the minors, and their system looks A LOT better. I mean, what do people expect when a team adds 3 legit MLB players from the minors, that the system is still awesome? And, if you expect that, the only way to do that is to deal major league players for lots of prospects, is that what you want?
MN is currently ranked 18th by Fangraphs.....after graduating those three......and they aren't done adding prospects this deadline, I'd guess.

Do you believe that all the injuries may have something to do with that, John?
Canterino, Duran, Enlow?  Not certain any are Top 100 material, but probably close.  Based on what he did at AA, I would think Winder should be Top 100, but then he wasn't a high draft pick.

The Twins have been buyers most of the past five years. Outside of 2018, when did they trade away anyone?

If a rebuild is the direction this is headed then the FO just needs to get as much talent in return as they can. If Buxton, Kepler, Donaldson and others are leaving they'll need high end position player prospects and not like the pitching pipeline is in poor shape.

7/$73 million is a joke. $15 m/AAV year before incentives is an absolute minimum. Also, there's little reason for either side to go 7 years. 5/$100m with $5m/year in incentives gets it done.

Yaaaaaawn.....this situation is tired. Wake me up when a trade happens
