Baltimore is ahead of the Twins in the wild card standings. Let that sink in for a few minutes.  Yes, those hapless Orioles who play in the toughest division in the AL and who traded their all-star closer to our Twins.   They also traded one of their better players, Trey Mancini, to the Astros.

I think you could have an aggressive strategy to pull Bundy there -- but not after a game where you aggressively pulled Mahle too.
An extra inning from Mahle on Friday day could have saved Fulmer for Saturday or prevented Durán and López from pitching back-to-back nights. Either of those advantages could have ultimately won the game for us Saturday, without risking the game Friday.

What does giving away 3-4 outs/game from a catcher include. Does this include pitch calling. I  find this hard to comprehend.  It is like having an error every other inning that doesn’t show up in the box score.   I know what giving away 4 outs / game at first base entails.

Great article, Cody. It's very important to find our weakness and improve on them. I also agree w/ TopGun that another area is lack of training in small ball- bunting, stealing, hit & run, hit the other way. After the year of the "live ball" (2019) our game strategy can longer be hit "moon blasts". Now in close games the strategy has to change from SO or FO as a result from the "moon blast" strategy to small ball, getting our runners in scoring postions & capitalize.
But our greatest problem is the innings gap between the SP to closer. Our current strategy is (on the average) 1 SP- 5 innings + 4-5 short RPs to go 1 inning each in a 9 inning game if there's overtime or doubleheaders will cause additional strain . That means we have to have IMO maybe 11 short RPs that we can interchange & at least 2 to close and that we can trust to compete. After we traded Rogers it turned out that we could only trust Duran as closer & Jax & sometimes Theilbar. So that means we have to go mostly go with short RPs which can't trust to complete games.
Management solution was to over extend the rotation, result was having all our SPs on the IL at some time or another, tired arms and lost games, so that's not the solution. We have a great rotation but we have what we have, they can give us 5 quality innings sometimes 6 but not consecutively on a regular basis.
At deadline we added to the short RPs that we can trust, a SP who supposingly can pitch 6+ innings regularly, released Duffy and put Pagan on the IL. This was a vast improvement but was it enough? Mahle who were depending to give us atleast 6 quality innings, in the 5th& 6th innings gave up 3 HRs & 4 runs. After 2 games we completely depleted our BP leaving high ERA Sands & LHP Theilbar to face a dominating RH batters. They used Sands in long relief and proved as w/ Cotton that they are terrible in short relief but does well in long.
My solution is long relief and use them regularly to fill that terrible gap. We have disgruntal A Sanchez, Smeltzer and Cotton sitting in AAA, that are very capable & trust worthy as present  candidates with Winder and Ober soon returning, Why waste them all in AAA? Makes no sense to me, especially when we have a gap to fill. So the solution is not over relying on short relief or over extending our SP with added innings, it is to implement long relief to keep everyone healthy, fresh & happy to get us to & thru the post season.

EXACTLY and this has been going on all season, almost from game #1. Rocco wore out the bullpen before we got to mid-June.

I don't think his career has been a disappointment.
He's been an All-Star, has had seasons of 25, 28, 30 and 34 HRs, has played over 100 games for the Twins in four of his 8 big league seasons, and has been a part of division-winning teams. He's played two positions in the big leagues, made a few memorable defensive plays and has always been considered a good teammate. Never complained about playing time, never was a prima-donna in the club house.
When it's all said and done, Miguel Sano will be able to say he's had a good MLB career and I hope the day will come when Twins fans stop the unnecessarily inconsiderate behavior towards a guy who's always tried his best for their team.

Eris got a reaction from joefish in 4 Better Options Than Emilio Pagán for the Minnesota Twins Bullpen
There aspects of Pagan that are quite good. He has 55 SO in 38 IP (13K/9).  This is slightly better than Duran’s 61 SO in 48 IP (11.4K/9). I am not sure all the reasons this doesn’t translate into results. Too many BB and too many balls that are crushed when he is ahead in the count are some of his issues. Poor command and too predictable pitching selection also contribute.  It will be interesting to see if Pagan improves with Leon behind the plate.
    data is from Fangraphs.

It’s hard to relegate Pagan to mop up duty when the starters aren’t allowed to pitch more than 4-5 innings. Every game they need at least four relievers and every other day they will need Pagan because of how Rocco handles the staff. They need to see Henriquez be consistent and successful in the BP before bringing him up. That leaves Moran and Sisk. I hope Pagan is a free agent after this season. Another year of him pouring gasoline on the game is too much to watch.

Twins have one big inning and can't add on - again. Contreras, Beckham, Gordon and Miranda drive in the runs without any help from the star players - again.  5-run lead isn't enough - again. Bullpen blows the save - again.  Baserunning blunders and fundamental mistakes - again. You get a feeling that if this game was played on the road the Twins would have blown it. Always good to get a win but this game clearly highlighted all of Minnesota's weaknesses. I've never seen a Twins team that's in a pennant race behave so casually when it comes to fundamentals. Still waiting on the big names on the roster to show up.

Is Sano officially done? As has been the case for a while now, the Twins are hanging on the precipice and seem to stay in must win the next game situations tonight being another one. They have been able to avoid falling off the cliff so far but if they lose the Jays series at home before heading to LA Dodgers it could be the beginning of the end for 2022.

Eris reacted to Bamboo Bat in Tyler Duffey Waived
Duffey was really good for a couple of years & passable last year, but his peripherals have been in slow, slow free fall.
Average fastball declined from 93.9 in 2019 to 92.3 in 2022. K rate fallen from 34.5% to 21.1% over the same period.
His average exit velocity in 2019 when his ERA hit 1.88 was, astonishingly, in the bottom 1% of AL pitchers. Read that again. It's appalling. My takeaway from all this random information is that a velo drop along with a 40% drop in Ks simply means more hitters getting the bat on the ball & he was always giving up hard contact...pain was inevitable in retrospect.
I appreciated his competitiveness, but also that he's gone from the major league roster. Every time he was summoned to the mound this year (even during his good streak) I'd start saying bad things to the TV. And given the falloff in his peripherals & velo I suspect his useful years are behind him, but no doubt he'll hang around bouncing from team to team until 2025. Other teams, i hope!

A W is W, but I found it undesirable that we needed to use our “A” bullpen to secure a series win against one of the worst teams in the league and then we surrender a very winnable game by marching out the “B” bullpen squad against Toronto.

The way I look at it is if you are going to use 4 relief pitchers (at minimum) every game, one is bound to be bad almost every night, so if three suck one night, the twins should be good for another game or two before another one blows up.
Also I cant imagine why teams didn't think of limiting a starter to 5 innings and using 4 relief pitchers to end a game way before the last few years, it seems like a wonderful formula. </s>
