gunnarthor got a reaction from lake_guy in High Marks??
I think what is particularly damning of the current FO is that, after six years, is that the Twins are in worse position then when they took over. I don't think anyone can credibly say that the 2023 Twins team is likely to be a playoff team and the farm system is worse now as well. Utter failure by the FO. But it seems like we'll need a few more seasons to clean house. In the meantime, the Twins blame you for ****** attendance.

Twins staff pitching bWAR by year.
2012 0.7 (29th by fWAR)
2013 7.8 (21st by fWAR)
2014 10.1 (14th by fWAR)
2015 16.3 (11th by fWAR)
2016 3.9 (23rd by fWAR) (Ryan fired)
2017 9.0 (24th by fWAR)
2018 9.2 (22nd by fWAR)
2019 16.8 (4th by fWAR)
2020 5.7 (3rd by fWAR) (COVID year, not a normal number)*
2021 -0.1 (25th by fWAR)
2022 9.4 (20th by fWAR)
The way baseball has changed slightly and the fact that we play in a pitcher friendly park has really hidden how utterly bad our pitching has become. Essentially, with the exception of 2019, the Twins have struggled to reach the standards of the 2014 pitching staff despite having huge payroll advantages. And the Ryan v. Falvine is a strawman. Ryan ain't coming back. We can get a new FO that is better than the current one. The current one is very bad.
* No. They get zero credit for 60 games against no name competition in a year where the SSS made Maeta seem like a viable Cy Young candidate.

gunnarthor got a reaction from Jerr in OK, not Twins, but ... Judge V Ohtani? Who ya got?
I love Ohtani but if Judge doesn't win it, it'll be a travesty. He's having a historic season.

I pretty much agree that the defense hasn’t been good. Errors are a less than good barometer for defensive ability and efficiency. I’ve long said Arraez graded out well at third, but he’s been a train wreck so far (SSS) this year. In the Boston series , Correa didn’t get to some balls that looked playable and Sanó made a pretty glaring misplay.
That said, I’ve seen enough to believe Correa is a first-rate defender at short, Urshela is better-than-average at third and Polanco is a good second baseman. I think they’ll be a good defensive team if their best defenders stay on the field.

Kiriloff for either A's pitcher would be an overpay considering the years of control left.

At this point I give them an F+. Sure they signed Buxton. That doesn't improve the team as he was already on the roster. If this winds up being what we are left with it's going to be an aweful summer of baseball.

gunnarthor reacted to LastOnePicked in Pineda's return for 2022? What is his contract like?
I'm confused. Why would we be spending this kind of money on an aging starter who just had multiple injuries, whose fastball is down to a career-low 90.9 mph, and whose strikeout rate was 5% below league average? MLB Trade Rumors also points out that he allowed "more hard contact than ever before, both in terms of average exit velocity (91.2 mph) and hard-hit rate (46.1 percent)."
If we're really going to compete in 2022, we need FA starters who are A LOT better than Pineda. If we're not going to compete in 2022, then it's time to see what the prospects can do. I don't see a roster spot for Pineda either way. The article says that Baldelli considers him a "pillar" in the clubhouse, but after a dismal 2021, I can't see a reason not to build a new clubhouse culture.

gunnarthor got a reaction from sjunisu in Grading Falvey's Drafts
I think the problem is, again, while nearly every move is defensible, and so is their draft strategy (at least, arguably defensible), it's not working. The list of "didn't work" is growing pretty long with this FO.

Sano's an impact bat who, I think, will age surprisingly well but I think he presses really hard and affects him. Once he gets going, he's ok but you got to let him go through his valleys. One of the dumber things Rocco did this year was bench him for Astuddio (sp). He should be penciled in at 1b/DH all the time. I'd be ok with Kiriloff in the OF with a healthy Buxton.

gunnarthor got a reaction from D.C Twins in NIck Gordon Sent to AAA - Is He a Long Term Player?
I suspect he'll won't be here next year but I think he does have a role somewhere as a jack-of-all-sorts backup player/pinch runner.

Leave him off the 40 man at this point. The Twins' front office have made their feelings on Gordon clear, now stop jerking his chain and let him get a chance someplace else.

I like the Gordon move to AAA to get the reps most likely at SS/2B and not so much in the OF. Let him play the rest of August and then in September bring him back to see how he plays those positions. Simmons can be moved to bench player and farewell pack on the back tour for rest of the season.

gunnarthor reacted to Seth Stohs in NIck Gordon Sent to AAA - Is He a Long Term Player?
If he was removed from the 40-man roster after the season, he would be a free agent.
I think he's done enough to put himself on the 40-man for the full offseason and a utility player role for 2022.

If the team is evaluating talent moving forward, I would have much rather seen Astudillo sent to AAA as I don't feel he has a future with this team.

gunnarthor got a reaction from In My La Z boy in Rocco’s Next Act May Define Him
I think you are being too charitable to this FO. They've made many bad moves where they simply misjudged the talent they had, misjudged talent they were getting back, or misjudged how other teams measured talent.
