tarheeltwinsfan got a reaction from PDX Twin in 4 Concerns with Josh Donaldson’s Off-Season Trade Value
I was not in favor of the signing of Josh Donaldson, due to his health problems, his past history as a catcher all through the minors and into the majors (hard on his legs), his surly personality, and his failure to hustle 100% of the time.  I think the Twins are stuck with him for the next 2 years. As far as his being a mentor for the young players...I would much rather Nelson Cruz mentor my son, if my son were a young baseball player. Being  the number 1 Twins fan in North Carolina, (since 1952, when they were in Washington), for me has not been about winning. If it were, I would have rooted for the Evil Empire all these years, and I'd wear a hat with NY on it. I know, I know some of you will disagree, but I ask you the following question, If it is totally about winning for you, why the hell are you a Twins' fan?

This doesn't make me hopeful for the future. I'm sure I will feel better and more optimistic come spring training 2022.

That's it... I might just bet on a sports game for the first time in 2022 and put money on the Yankees every single time they play the Twins. Either I will make a profit since the Twins are guaranteed to poop themselves every time they play New York, or I will break the Twins' horrible streak by losing money. A win-win, perhaps.

Good hope-filled article. Thanks Nick. I needed that this morning. I am reminded of a poem "The Hollow Men". by T.S. Eliot ".This is the way the world ends, not with a bang, but a whimper." Kind of sums up the end of the Twins season also.

Yes.  Pineda would be a waste of money.  Blocking people not what the Twins need to be doing.

The main argument made in this article is that Pineda has become injury prone thus the Twins should not resign him.  Use your crystal ball and tell me what pitcher they currently have or will sign that isn't going to have an injury. They could sign a top free agent pitcher for next season that has never been injured and the guy could blow his arm out the first game he pitches for the Twins. There are no guarantees. The current rotation stacks up as Ober, Jax, Ryan, and a combination of Pineda, Dobnak, Gant and any other arm that is still attached to someone's body. If this is the plan for 2022 and to take a look at Balazovic, Duran, Winder, during the 2022 season then they are looking to 2023 and beyond, which means there won't be any big moves this off-season but more of the same dumpster diving for live arms to patch a rotation for the season. The guys like Smeltzer, Thorpe, Albers, Barraclough have no value going forward. They need to stop looking back for old arms that aren't worth anything and start looking forward to the young talent they have.

I often wonder, Nick, if you include tidbits in your posts that are wrong to see if we catch them.  Today, you had me wondering when the Twins acquired Danny Duffy?  Regardless, I enjoyed this piece and everything you do at TD.
Find it hard to believe that Ryan's start last week wasn't the best start of the year.  With all that has gone on since, its hard to remember that first game by Berrios so without searching I don't recall his line that day.
Also, don't know whether I agree or not with the idea of bringing Big Mike back for the starting rotation.  Yes, he can and often is effective.  Problem is we know he is going to miss a good chunk of the season for whatever reason(s).  I also read when he was acquired that Gant would like to be a starter.  Perhaps having him in a long relief role so he can slide into Pineda's spot when not available would solidify one spot in the rotation...say the #4 spot.
Read in this morning's Strib that Rocco wants to keep using Gordon in a utility role, versus playing him at short the rest of the season.  Also indicated that Rocco would like to have Simmons back.  Uggh!  Count me among those who had given up on Gordon.  Have changed my mind and would like to see him back with the Twins next year in a semi starting role along with Polo and Arraez.

Buck may have a better chance at utilizing his speed, if  he would bunt once a week and hit away from any shifts. Why is this so difficult to do? Maybe I'm wrong in thinking Wee Willie Keeler was correct. Now it seems the mantra is to hit it as hard as you can, no matter where the shifts are playing you and no matter if there is a runner on second with no outs.. His batting average has dropped 60 points since his return. Not exactly an MVP ending to this season which, for Buck, began on an MVP pace.

And today the staff ranks 27th in era, 18th in whip, and 2nd most hr given up against. Even with two division titles(and the pathetic playoff series' that followed), that doesn't look like improvement.
Im not even about wanting them fired today or tomorrow, but that's what I think most people of that persuasion are probably looking at. That and the fact that next year doesn't look all that promising, and it FEELS more likely than not that we'll be selling off some more of our position talent(that was drafted or signed by the last FO), to facilitate another rebuild.

The difference in Buxton is it looks like he'll be an MVP level player when he's on the field. Now that Pineda is throwing under 90 mph it's fair to wonder whether he can even get by in a rotation at all over the course of a full season.

Rod Carew had 128 career sacrifice hits (a number that is just sacrifice bunts and does not include sacrifice flies).  I don't know how many bunt singles he had, but to say that "Rod Carew attempted to bunt 126 times" in his career is clearly incorrect.

I was told on another thread that free agents were paid based on past performances., not what they are going to do. If you look ay the recent few years prior to signing the Twins got some great deals. Next year those players, except for Shomaker, are just going to show you how wrong you were about them. Teams should rush to sign these player because surly they all came down with the dreaded Lance Lynn disease. You should remember the symptoms and the course of the disease. You put on a Twins uniform for less Monet than you think you deserve and forget how to throw a baseball

And maybe if Kepler would just try to go to the opposite field once his shift would become less pronounced

If the opposition would have played the shift that Kepler gets against Carew, I am willing to bet he would have bunted alot more

Loved the trade when the Twins made it, like it even more after this young man's first two starts.  If we can get anything out of Strotman, fantastic!
I will repeat something I said yesterday.  I believe the Twins should sign some vet hitter or pitcher on a one year contract every offseason with the expectation that they will trade him to a contender at the deadline.  Won't always get a return this good, but maybe some years we would.  That trade also opens a spot on the roster for a young prospect to break-in with the Twins.
As I read the above, my thoughts were that I treat all these scouting reports with a grain of salt.  Yes, they provide some general information about the player, such as what pitches he throws, etc.  Some one can, and will, correct me if I am wrong, but these scouting reports aren't the internal reports teams have on opposing players they scout (major league and minors) or their internal reports on their own players.  Would put a lot more weight into those versus the ones available to the public.

Whatever Ryan turns out to be (agree the MLB sample size is small, but he has performed at other levels), some of the knocks against him are of the 'so what' variety. Right, he throws a fastball in the low 90s, but plenty of excellent pitchers (Maddux, Buehrle, Greinke) get by/got by in that range. Right, he throws a lot of fastballs - so do Lance Lynn and Jake Odorizzi (also around the same mph and spin rate). He can be an effective MLB pitcher with what he's already got.

I agree Mike.  It should make the job easier for the Twins FO to go out and sign a SOLID FA SP, TRADE for a SOLID SP and then dumpster dive like they usually do for a "serviceable" vet like a Pineda,  Eduardo Rodriguez or a Dylan Bundy type (maybe Dobnak gets healthy).  We've only seen a couple starts, but I like what I see.  Except for one mistake pitch to the red hot Cubs rookie Schwindel, he's been VERY impressive.  I think his slider is filthy, and as has been mentioned, his arm angle on his fastball makes his 91-94 mph SEEM faster.  There sure is a fair amount of deception to his delivery.
I hated to see Nellie Cruz go, but I knew he had to be traded.  Not sure what we'll get with Strotman, but Ryan looks like a keeper.  We will also have to wait and see how Balazovic, Duran, Canterino and Winder look this off-season and monitor their health closely.

I cannot decide what future he might have except to say that he has to be with Ober in next years rotation.  Maeda will not be back so I hope other young arms emerge to fill out the rotation.  What I like is his relaxed confidence.
