Do the statistics show that 5+ years for a starting pitcher doesn't pay off too many times to justify 5+years? If so, Berrios would  have been the type of pitcher I would be willing to take a chance on, given his good health history and his attention to his workouts.

I'd do 1/20 or 1+an option/20, but I wouldn't go further than that. I wouldn't go into meltdown mode and call for the FO to be fired, but I'd call 3/60 a mistake. I'd call Rodon and offer him a Thor style 1/21 deal and he may be interested in that, but I wouldn't guarantee him multiple years at 20.

Top Gunn said "a secondary signing like Jon Gray" so I'm pretty sure they meant Jon, not Sonny.
Rodon is an interesting case. More risk than I'd be willing to give 20M to. Not just because of the injuries (both elbow and shoulder injuries throughout his career is very concerning, though), but also because he's had 1 serious outlier of a season. He wasn't claimed last year because he wasn't worth claiming, but now you want to give him 20M a year for multiple years? No thanks.
Gausman just got 22 a year after much more sustained success. Descalfini got 3 years 36M. He's a little older, but has had multiple above average seasons, unlike Rodon. Jon Gray got 4 years 56M and has also had more above average seasons than Rodon. ERod got 5/77. Verlander, Thor, Gausman, and Morton are the only guys to get 20M a year so far. Those were for 1+an option, 1, 5, and 1 years. All of them have far more established success than Rodon. He's exactly the type of pitcher I'd sit back and see how the market plays out and snag him late if he's trying to get 3/60 now. If he'd do 3/45 I'd take that, but not 3/60. Can't be afraid of any risk at all, but also can't ignore risk and pretend it doesn't matter. The Twins have enough high injury risk players on their team and in their system. Don't pay 20M a year to add another one who's only had 1 above average season.

This contract is nuts and I wouldn’t want or expect the Twins to do it.
But inflation is hitting all businesses and consumers, the Twins better be ready and willing for team a record payroll in 2022 and by a substantial margin. Employees are getting paid more, they need to deal with it just like every other company.

Did Texas pay a premium to be the first to sign the shortstop? And why the hell is Texas spending that kind of money for a veteran shortstop?

I'm ready to hand the SS job to Lewis and let him do the best he can and take his lumps as he progresses. He has the type of mindset and the type of athleticism which will succeed at SS for a winning MLB team. . To quote Newman: "Mark my words and mark them well.". Lewis will succeed at SS for the Twins in 2022.  He will light a fire that this team needs and he will be a leader in the infield and Buck will be a leader in the OF on this Twins team for years to come.

This is absolutely the best news. Now I am looking forward to Spring Training at Ft. Myers.  What specifically is a full no trade clause? Does it mean the Twins cannot trade Buck?  Thank you FO for signing Buck.  Now go get some pitching.

Yes. Step #1 is complete. Time to take a nap and then get busy talking to Oakland, Miami, and Milwaukee.I don't think other teams have as much to offer as the Twins. The future is now; great signing.

This is wonderful  news to hear - kudos to Buxton for signing this deal and the Twins for getting it done.     Since both signings were announced today would you rather have Buxton signing for 7 years and $100M (plus incentives) for his age 28-34 seasons or Marcus Simien signing for 7 years and $175M at his age 31-37 seasons?

I love this deal for Twins fans. Byron Buxton will be in MN and not kicking butt for the Dodgers or the Mets or god only knows whom.
If Buxton is happy with it, then that's great for him. It gives him life-changing, generational wealth, which is terrific. I don't care about whether it costs ownership; the Pohlads are doing fine and will always do fine.
From a franchise perspective and being a team with more limits on payroll than some other teams, this is great too. Huge bonuses for MVP? Sure. If Byron Buxton wins an MVP, he'll deserve every penny of those multi-million bonuses and the club should be happy to pay it. I had assumed that the sticking point was escalators, not bonuses; if they were getting jammed up on stuff like this earlier in the summer then someone needs to give some wakeup calls to the FO, because good lord this is pretty ideal for the team. Sure, you don't have the same cost certainty when there could be a multi-million dollar bonus hanging out there, but a) if he wins it the revenues will probably be pretty strong, and b) you could simply escrow a year's potential bonus and wait on it if you're that concerned about payroll certainty. The PA bonuses are also ones that the team should be thrilled to pay, because if Buxton is on the field that much, then the potential $2.5M increase is worth it.
Byron Buxton could be the best player in all of baseball and the most we'll have to pay him will be like $25M. And with the way it's structured, this is a deal that's going to age really well.
But mostly, I'm just super happy that the most singularly exciting player in my Twins lifetime (and I'm not young) is staying with the team. Losing Byron Buxton because we wouldn't pay him a good, but under market contract would have been soul-crushing. He's one of our guys. We've seen him from the start, and there's something wonderfully joyous about having a player who combines such great skill with excitement and happiness be on your team for 10+ years of their career all the way from the start, and uniquely painful if they leave during their prime.
Today is a great day for Twins fans.

Semien just set the SS market bar quite high, 7/$175MM ($25MM AAV) for a guy who will be 2B in a couple seasons. Here's to hoping Lewis or Martin pans out after whoever the team signs as a stop-gap.

I'm curious what this means for Royce Lewis? Does the FO see him as a shortstop moving forward (meaning his recovery must be going very well) or is he now trade bait for some high-end pitching (Castillo? Montas?)?
