tarheeltwinsfan reacted to Brock Beauchamp in 40-man roster decisions, part 1: position players
Given how this season has gone and the way the roster is built, I wouldn't hesitate to clean house in the outfield. I'd drop Garlick, Refsnyder, Cave, Astudillo, and Rooker. I'd keep Gordon because I think he has real potential as a 10/11 man and he's actually kind of key to my outfield plans...
If Gordon is a legit CF backup, maybe I keep a right-handed bat like Refsnyder or Rooker (I lean toward Refsnyder due to the glove but Rooker's bat is far more potent). If Gordon is not a legit backup CF, I ditch all the corner guys and go sign a competent defensive backup CF for a million bucks.
Basically, it's time to move on from no-position corner guys taking up well over half the team's positional roster space. This team needs more balance than it has had in the past and that means sacrificing a little offense for defensive competency on the bench.

Kind of reminds me of "the draft" in 1963-1967, when I was in college and then enlisted in the army in 1967. That "draft" really did chose some of America's best and some not so good.  Some developed into good marching soldiers and some developed into good field soldiers. It was hard to predict who was going to be a good fighting soldier.  A lot of it just came down to doing our jobs, never quitting, looking out for each other and luck.

You're a tough grader. I don't think most fans are going to consider a C to be acceptable?
I also think you're skipping an analytical component in this: signing status on the pick. We got Enlow because we were able to go above slot on him. Why did we have the resources available? Lewis was a guy we didn't have to go high on to get him to sign, and Rooker was signed below slot.
but the bigger issue is you explicitly say player development is separate from drafting...but your grades seem very much tied to the player development side of things, as you evaluate these players today on their progress in the system and projection in the future. For example: Landon Leach got crushed in this analysis, but he did fine in his initial exposure to rookie ball and then got hurt/lost a season to the pandemic. (btw, he was a HS selection not a collegiate one)

I still expect Arráez is the opening day LF and Kirilloff won’t make the opening day roster. I am hoping they choose to go with 4 bench players, Cave and Jeffers look to be locks, which would leave room for one of the 3 mentioned above, or Drew Maggi?? And then one other, Rooker??

Hawk Harrelson retiring took some fun out of the rivalry. The Twins got the addendum of his Home Run call "You can put it on the board! Yes! (pause if it was against Twins)...Hell Yes! Even my Sox fans agree with this

No, I self diagnosed but here in Brazil I need a doctor's prescription to get it. So I got a doctor friend to write one for me. These facts can be found on the internet.

I had hoped Bauer would be signed by the White Sox so Bauer could disrupt the whole White Sox squad.  As it is, Bauer's signing with LA will only help the Padres.  Talk about team chemistry. Can you say "Oil and water"?. "Start the drone fleet's motors/."

What a wonderful post.  I really enjoy these thought out responses.  I doubt I will ever stop watching baseball, but I do tire of all the money talk and the emphasis on what is being paid out, how cheap a team owner is, etc.  Things like Bauer's contract simply amplify what I think is wrong.  On MLB.com I am thoroughly enjoying their essays on the negro leagues now.  It is the story, not the contract that interests me.

Mike, we are about the same age. If you enjoy baseball you can find pleasure watching grade school, VFW, Legion, college, amateur, and minor league ball as well as relaxing while watching the Twins or other MLB teams. I'm sure you can do that. For example, Dundas and Miesville have wonderful parks and teams and it is a fun place to watch or play baseball. The money is irrelevant in most ways once the players are at the top level except for its undefined affect on the minor leagues. The complaints against Mauer's contract were 100% off base except as an idea that players should earn closer to a common salary, like a teacher, but ignoring that Mauer may have made triple his salary or more in business. Baseball is totally corporate and thus financially driven. The special exception status has created the game we watch today. If you haven't already done so, watch The Battered Bastards of Baseball. Despite the total manipulation of the product by MLB and all of its ridiculous faults (not setting rules a minimum of a year in advance being just one of many), baseball is still enjoyable to watch. Turn off the sound, which is almost exclusively advertising in one form or another, and let your mind wander. Bauer is fun to watch and that is enough. His salary has zero affect on our ability to enjoy the competition.

Many say Simmons is all glove & no bat. But his bat is pretty good too, just that he doesn't have the power of some other top SS's. I'll still take his glove over their bats

It is odd that the best SS's the Twins have ever had (other than Zoilo) have all been acquired via trade (Cardenas, Gagne, Guzman come to mind).
It is also true than Polanco was an A.L. All Star due to his bat, not his glove.
I want to see the Twins get better "D" up the middle.  That's why I'm not against looking at a FA signing (Simmons, Didi) or a trade for someone like Story.
However, if a BIG move was made for someone like Story, I want the Twins to work out an extension much like the Mets did with Lindor.  I don't want a one-year rental.
I have no superior knowledge, I just see Lewis more as an outfielder.
I still have hope for Wander Javier but this is pretty much a make or break year for him.  He either stays healthy and puts himself back in the serious SS of the future conversation, or I fear he will never turn the corner and drift into the dust bin of forgotten prospects.

Your assessment of the Twins' short stops is sound. Adding a player from outside the organization either via trade or free agency is about making the team better. That doesn't always mean simply shoring up weaker areas - the Twins could improve their team by bringing in a SS like Simmons and finding a different regular role for Polanco.

SS factory? Who could Mike be talking about? It couldn't be our Twins? To my knowledge they haven't produced a bona fide SS since Zoilo Versalles.
Prospects usually don't pan out and leave or move to a different position. Polanco became an all star because of his bat not his glove. He's a 2B but was thrust at SS when we traded Escobar.
It seems that any good SS we've had, we gotten thru trade. Lewis is a good SS but will he stay there?
Why can't we produce our own SS, Mike? It's a question that needs to be asked. Thank you Mike for bringing this to our attention.

I don't think the Twins land Bauer, which means I'd agree with you. Ultimately I'd like to see Odorizzi and a trade for Musgrove, Gray, Castillo, or Sonny Gray
