EGFTShaw reacted to Doctor Gast in How Will the Twins use Dylan Bundy?
Here again I'll state that if we're looking at a full season, we need to throw out the shortened 2020 season. But my guess is that they know Bundy can't pitch a full season, he's not a work horse. So going along with Nick Nelson's earlier article that this FO is not looking for work horses that will get you at least 5 innings/ games through out the season. They are looking at a bunch of openers and long relievers that'll give you 3 innings/ game. Trying to extend Bundy to pitch 5+ innings/ game would have a 2021 result but under the opener/ long relief scenario IMO FO believes they could expect the 2020 Bundy.
They'll need a lot of pitchers to fill out this scheme so I suppose they're looking at a few AAAA pitchers that can rotate from St. Paul to the club. I'm not against this idea because you need to keep the pressure off the starters & short relief. Over relying on short relief we normally see a break down some time in the season which puts extra pressure on the starters to pitch longer than they should. Hopefully if this is their idea it'd help us get through the season and into the Post Season rested. So we can better compete there.
Still I'd like to have 1 or 2 pitchers that could go at least 5 ininnings.

This does nothing for me - we have minor leaguers who can be tweaked - how about signing a pitcher who does not have to be tweaked.  Are we a repair shop or a major league team looking to win?  I am watching pitchers sign all over both leagues while we desperately need, but do not act.  We continue to be bottom feeders when we need to be at the top - Faria, Bundy and who ever we grabbed when we dropped Cave are not inspiring signings.
Yes I want the minor leaguers to prove themselves, but no Berrios - no Maeda and no signing that moves the bar.  Buxton is great, but he does not pitch.  We might as well bring back Astudillo and put him in the rotation - I am sure there are a lot of tweaks to do there.

I agree.  In fact you could trade one starting positional player for Manea.

According to the Trade Simulator, you could swap Jeffers for Manea.
But you would need a good sense if you could sign him.

If it would take the 4 prospects you list to get him then it's an absolute NO. 4 prospects for a 1 year stop-gap pitcher? NEVER.

I agree that they're not retooling.  I'm not sure if they're rebuilding, because I'm not sure what they're trying to build.  If they're going to trade away their good young players as soon as they qualify for high salaries, they're never going to build anything.

I love the The Machined, durable, solid #2 stuck in a role of being a #1.  If he definitely said he wanted to test FA then I would flip him as well.  7 years is a long time for an Arm.
I tend to favor higher value shorter term contracts for established #1 pitchers.

For the Twins to ever be viewed as a good destination then need to do what the Nats did with Jason Werth(sp?), pay extra either in years or in annual salary to bring a BIG, (not 2nd tier), FA to Target Field.

Out of the guys out there, I would go after Mad Max, serious.
2 years $90M, this gives him possibly one more contract with some team if he stays healthy.  1 year isn't going to do it. I would like to see up to 3 of the young Twins pitchers this year in any combinations.  Growing for the future while they are still affordable.  Get some Frankie Viola years before they leave if possible,   Learning from Mad Max.

Part of my sales pitch would be to talk to Mad Max about who he thinks would be a good #2 and possibly #3 we could realistically get.  Rodon if his medicals are good?  Trade with Oakland?  Trade with Tampa?

Yes this would push our budget past the 10% increase, but it would sell tickets and then hire away the 2nd in command from the marketing teams at Barcelona, Man United, Bayern or Man City.  The US pro teams, except the NBA, are behind the soccer world when it comes to marketing merchandise.

    Yeah I am dreaming...

But we can't simply do what we have always done and expect different results.
If not Mad Max, then a SS.  But the SS will cost you more years and more money long term.

That we had a chance to sign Buxton for 100 mil and didn't is grounds to quit watching the team.
I knew Berrios was gettable. Knowing they wouldn't pay a reasonable price for a homegrown product, how do you all feel about the chances they make a big splash for a FA pitcher?
    This is mismanagement. Indefensible.

No, but do not spend resources on players that will not be here in 3 years.  That is why I am in favor of signing an ace reliever and an ace starter next offseason.  Do not waste money on players just to get a little better next year.

Think Big, or Go Home:  I'd take a shot at Ramos.  Injured, no QA from Nationals.  1 year contract for recovery time plus option year.  Not sure how I'd structure that, as Ramos would probably bolt after 1st year if fully recovered.

Weiters.  Another, 'why not' ?  From MLBTR:  "Wieters also didn’t receive strong framing reviews, though he was solid with his arm by measure of Baseball Prospectus."  Would OK framing be OK for Twins pitchers?  Take a shot at a lot less than the $17M he made last year? His hitting was off last year.  Which included 17 HR's.

Avila:  "Fangraphs' measure of catching defense, Avila ranked second in the major leagues in 2014. He also led the American League, throwing out 36 baserunners attempting to steal. Avila was second in caught stealing percentage, and had a league-best three passed balls among qualified catchers."

Castro.  Probably the safest bet, if he can hit anything.  Good 'change of scenario' bet?

Take a whack at Ramos, but would be happy with either Castro or Avila.
