    I agree 107% with @Cory Engelhardt wrote.

I see NO value in bringing in back of the end rotation guy.  None.  Use this for our top minor league pitchers.
I understand the alleged, (and I say alleged because it is short sighted given the contracts the Twins have on the hooks after 24 and 25 seasons), rationale for downsizing our payroll, but we just finished with the best we have in over the past 20 years.

I don't know if there is a deal to be made, but if this notion of going after a backend guy is real and not a ruse, then the Twins are going to continue to be midlevel team and never advance out this self-imposed cage.

It sure gets thoughts provoking I agree!
I appreciate your openness to understand that it should be on the table. As I mentioned, the return should be sizable.
I will argue the Twins won the Rogers/Paddack AND PAGAN trade by a landslide. Pagan alone made that deal worthwhile. I'm excited to see what Paddack can do in 2024!

First comment: Whelp this got some people active on TD... 😆
Second comment: I am not in favor of trading Brooks Lee in general.
Third comment: No one should be considered untouchable if the return is right.  Well, the No Trade guys are I guess by definition untouchable.

But if you have a change to improve your team, you make the deal.  But as with any trade that is an attempt to foretell the future outcome, it is fraught with risk.  As the Lopez/Arraez trade shows it can be a win/win and at this moment the Rogers/Paddock/et al trade at the moment can be a lose/lose. Note: It is trending towards a Twins win if Paddock contributes at a meaningful level.
But go BIG or go HOME to the Oakland Las Vegas Athletics.

I don't see the value of adding a backend starter to the rotation. I just don't. Maybe as the 2nd guy they would add, but they SHOULD be shooting to add someone who they would be comfortable starting in a playoff game. I don't know what that looks like, and it doesn't have to be a NAME guy, but creativity will be important compared to settling.

The Gray trade will look good forever regardless of what Petty does. He gave the Twins 303.2 innings over two years with a 2.90 ERA, ERA+ 142 and WAR of 7.7, and helped break the worst post season losing streak in history of all sports.  All While Petty was pitching 165 innings in A ball. Now there is a plenty of time for this trade to also work out for the Reds.

We can go down some of these trade trees for years but with the Gray-Petty trade we’re likely getting a Comp A pick back when Gray signs elsewhere. If that pick turns out greater than or equal to Petty we really nailed that one.

I’m not understanding why the Tyler Mahle and Jorge Lopez trades are excluded. Without looking these up there is also Sam Dyson, Michael Fulmer, Kenta Maeda, Chris Paddock.

The difference, and it's a huge difference, is that SonnyG's has had an uptick since leaving NY and LG has gone in the opposite direction.

Mercy that is a lot of money in to be placed into each one of those egg baskets. Get it wrong, or if the pitcher suffers an injury, which negatively alters his career, and the team, which is obligated for this kind of money, is in a precarious financial position. While I understand and, in fact, advocated for the Buxton contract, it has hurt the team financially, and may continue to do so in the future.  But these dollar figures for 30 year old starting pitchers are very risky. I believe I'd go with Wacha instead.

LG is what the Twins FO has done, even back beyond our current FO, is go cheap and hope to hit a HR.

As a Twins fan, with a team set up to win, No Thanks.

All indications are that SonnyG will leave, I am aware of that, as I stated in other articles when it comes to signing him its length/$$s conundrum.  We are not going to pay for 4 years of SonnyG.  2-3 years perhaps.

But if we are not spending $20-$25M to keep SonnyG, we sure as hell not getting the other pitchers since either the term of the contract will be too long or the AAV will be too high.

Snell?  If you think this, please share with all Twins Fans what you're smoking.

Often, it is better the Devil you know, than the Devil you don't know.  Hence spending the $$s on C4 AFTER we had him one year makes sense.

If you 💖LG or any other Bet On Their Upside FA pitchers great, but 💖the from afar.

    They are speculating Nola $150M/6yrs, Monty $150M/6yrs, Yamamoto $225M/9yrs, Snell $200M/7yrs, Imanaga $85M/5yrs, Rodriguez $82M/4yrs, LG $44M/2yrs, Stroman $44M/2yrs and SonnyG $90M/4yrs.

    Ponder away.

The article I read about the payroll loan by the Padres is it is not unusual for MLB teams to do this.  So I wouldn't read too much into it.

A regressed SonnyG is still better than Wacha IMHO.

Wacha is not a bad choice overall I guess if we have lost SonnyG.

Not an unusual move for businesses in general and as something we don't usually hear about it causes headlines.  Combined with the TV deal stuff they have going on it is probably more noteworthy than most times.  It's also a pretty big number.  If I'm making the loan, I gotta hear a good plan.  Their banker may know more about the offseason plan than most of the front office.  They also asked for near the full $100m and got $50m.  They admit to overspending as part of a plan but its still concerning on some levels.  If we hear about a cash call from the 27 or whatever owners, buckle up.
Wacha isn't good enough for them to spend the money on when you look around the rest of their locker room.  Several other teams including the Twins could afford it and it would be a decent deal.

Very good article. Wacha would be a fine addition to the Twins rotation. Affordable and reasonable.  The Twins do need a starter to replace Sonny Gray. However, my first choice would be to re-sign Gray to a 3 year contract for $63 million. He probably will be offered more by other teams, however his age makes a 3 year contract risky.

Not to mention the fact he was only making $10-12m over last few years.

Nick thinks it will take close to $20m for a Giolito?  No thanks.

Unless you can get him on a make good contract (think 1yr/$5m) I wouldn't touch him with a 10-foot pole.
