Cris E reacted to Dman in Garver blames Jeffers....
I hate the unwritten rules as much or more than anyone so I don't agree with what the Twins did there. Still I don't buy Garver's explanation. It is like no pitcher plans to bean someone unless of course you can get them to admit it.
Garver states, hey, no way we bean Jeffers because Gallo is up. Who would you rather pitch to? Gallo who K's at 43% rate with a .177 BA or Jeffers with a .280 BA and 29% K rate. It seems obvious to me and it seemed obvious to the Twins. They were gonna work around Jeffers and why not plunk him in the process. I can acknowledge Dunning did not have great control but he didn't hit anyone else with that crappy control only Jeffers.

No way??
Did you watch the first 3 innings?? Yes, Dunning was wild. But EVERY miss was yanked badly outside to righties. Then when Jeffers comes up he conviently puts it right into his ribs/forarm area??
Im down with you arguing major conicidence but to say ther is no way it was intentional is nuts. I get why the Twins thought it immediately. He threw in a location he wasnt hitting for 3 innings to the exact batter they would bean if intentional
TBH my reason for hesitation is I think it would have been better to hit Jeffers the AB before after Wallners triple with the momentum and first base open. But maybe the Rangers thought that was too obvious and may get a immediate ejection.
Either way, the only thing clear is there is no way to say for certain it was or wasnt. It was suspect and in a weird place in the game.

He'd homered earlier in the day and came up the very next inning after they hit our star catcher. I don't think they hit Jeffers on purpose, but Garver was a reasonable target if you were going to retaliate.

I've never met any these guys so I wouldn't have a clue about whether they are infantile brats or responsible well-adjusted gents. But in the 2020's almost everyone gets traded, DFA'd, not resigned, etc... at some point, so if you can't get over that you're going to have a hard career. Also, right or wrong, plucking Garver made sense as he was the other team's catcher and Jeffers was the one who got hit first. He should have been expecting it.

Cris E got a reaction from Richie the Rally Goat in Making moves for the playoffs with Angels
I'm not sure other teams will be pissed any more than if they'd been traded for in July or gathered off waivers in earlier years. Teams can see the spots that the Angels are in and can picture the Why of these moves, and they can see the spot the Marlins are in and can see why they'd grab more than one of these guys. Players move within the scope of the rules every year and there's very little complaining. I think when FRod was able to be added to the 40 man for the playoffs as a rookie it blew up a little, but that sort of things only happens once every ten years.
On the other hand I do like the Free Puppies image.

Have none of you guys played online OOTP leagues before? This happens with teams almost every season with some soon to be free agent vets.
Everyone assumes it's only playoff hopeful teams who will be claiming as well. A savvy non contender could very well claim players and try for extensions as well.

This isn't a binary equation. You can have an injury but still be capable of playing (Correa has made several great plays with his arm defensively in the last few games that no one else on this team could make) but it will hamper your performance. You can be injured seriously enough that you can't be effective in the game or play at all. You can be totally healthy. And at this point in the season it's pretty common to have a few nicks and dings that you can play through but ideally would have a chance to rest and recover from.
While Farmer is a capable backup and Lewis could slide in at SS, neither are as good as Correa defensively (and Farmer isn't any better offensively and gets exposed the more he plays). I'm sure the goal is to try to get through this crucial week of the season with the lead staying at 6 or more over Cleveland and to try and find some days off for Correa down the stretch to clear some of those dings off the board and improve his overall health.
It's not about excuses, it's about reality.
more importantly, if the Twins win today, they take the series and increase the lead to 7.

I've had plantar fasciitis and it is painful. I don't know how Correa continues to play every day. Kudos to him.
Kudos is an odd word. It sounds like an about-to-be extinct bird from New Zealand.

Amen: look at those 4 seamers in the mid-90s. And the graph below shows how Wallner is taking away inside pitches with his shoulder, elbow and foot. Nice article.

A whole lot of razors edge riding in the game thread last night. It takes a certain toughness and courage to undertake that for 162 games, Lol.
In his 9 years as a big leaguer, Carlos had 2 years with a low 90's OPS+ (and one of them, this year, isn't over yet), 1 year at essentially league average at 99 OPS+ (which is above average for a SS), and 6 years averaging 136.5 OPS+ (137 last year). That is all-star level for any player and league stalwart for a GG SS. I'm not worried about Carlos going forward. Playing on an injured foot he is playing a ton of games, is absolutely stellar in the field and still maintains his leadership role in spite of the struggles. I'd bet he finishes strong as well.

Here are the details of Correa's contract:
https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/minnesota-twins/carlos-correa-14168/
2023: $33,333,333
2024: $33,333,333
2025: $37,333,333
2026: $32,833,333
2027: $31,833,333
2028: $31,333,333
2029: vesting option $25m
2030: vesting option $20
2031: vesting option $15
2032: vesting option $10
The vesting options have multiple ways to become guaranteed, with the most likely being PAs the season prior, starting at 575 in 2028 for 2029 and gradually dropping to 502 in 2031 for 2032. The others are mostly awards (silver slugger, MVPs etc).

Cris E reacted to jmlease1 in Guardians 4, Twins 2: Cleveland Bullpen Baffles Twins Lineup, Evens Series
it's only guaranteed for 5 more seasons, instead of 9+ (last 4 years are team options, with guarantees only for full season performances) Plus the salary does start decrease after 2025 (Correa's age-30 season) and the last 4 option years have sharply decreasing salaries. Yes, it's not going to be good if this is Correa is for the next 5 years...but it's also not a franchise-ruining contract. Plantar Fasciitis sucks, but people recover from it. But it's a challenging injury in that it mostly takes time and flare ups can happen even when you have a few good weeks.

The worst position on the Twins is to be the highest paid player. Better never have a bad day, because fans will turn on you here so fast it'll make your head swim. (BTW, none of the star SS signed last season are having very good years at the plate; Correa is struggling the most, which is probably related to his plantar fasciitis, but Bogaerts, Swanson, and Turner are all only league average hitters this year. None are playing like stars) If you're hurt, better make sure that it's something obvious and ugly (and from a play on the field) and that you keep looking injured too. Not that it's going to happen in a billion zillion years, but if the Twins cut Correa, someone would definitely take him, especially since the contract the Twins have protect against him being bad long term.
Almost no one had a particularly good game last night (Lopez battled, but gave up 8 hits and 3 walks in his 6 innings. We were lucky he only yielded 3 runs). Vazquez was pretty brutal at the plate. Gallo looked desperate for a walk, Polanco was swinging through everything, Team was 0 for 9 with RISP. Just a frustrating game.
Sometimes bullpen games go that way, the matchups just don't land well and no one gets in a rhythm.
Go out and win the series today and put last night's game behind you.

Reports are that his foot is still bothering him, so he is injured.
Is that why he didn't run out the gound ball? I don't know, but he's dealt with plantar fasciitis since May.

Has Wallner ever missed time from getting HBP? Matt “Cement Bones” Wallner has an interesting ring to it.

Cris E reacted to Richie the Rally Goat in Making moves for the playoffs with Angels
Sure, they could, but the claimed player can’t be on the post season roster. So you’d lose 2 spots on 40 man depth for the post season. The guy you claimed, and the guy you released to make room.

Cris E reacted to pierre75275 in Making moves for the playoffs with Angels
I don't think they claim a hitter to replace Ludlow.
Buxton coming back will replace Ludlow.
AK is the 27th man and Castro is the 28th for September.
That being said, they need to claim both Lopez and Moore. Either is better then Floro.
If they get both, unfortunately, Kody F is pry sent back to AAA.
I wouldn't have a problem if they DFA Gallo and brought up Martin but I doubt they do that.
I hope they don't pick anybody else up.
-
Cris E reacted to Richie the Rally Goat in Making moves for the playoffs with Angels
No one is going to claim them Sept 1. If you aren’t making the post season you aren’t adding the cost. If you are making the post season, you don’t want to dilute your roster with players that can’t be on the playoff roster.
in other words, a catch and release will cost you the salaries
-
Cris E reacted to DJL44 in Making moves for the playoffs with Angels
The Twins could do that pretty easily. Grab two players, cut Gallo and Luplow. When Kirilloff and Buxton return, cut those two players you just grabbed off waivers. I think the salaries would be more of a deterrent than the 40 man roster slots.

AZPhil has a good explainer on Waivers
“If a player is claimed by only one club, that club is awarded the claim. If more than one club makes a claim, the club with the lowest winning percentage (regardless of league) either from the previous season (beginning on the day after the conclusion of the MLB regular season through the 30th day of the MLB regular season) or on the day the player clears waivers (beginning on the 31st day of the MLB regular season through the last day of the MLB regular season) is awarded the claim. If two clubs with the same winning percentage make a claim, the club in the player's own league is awarded the claim. If two clubs from the same league make a claim and they are tied in the standings, the club with the lowest winning percentage from the previous season is awarded the claim. If the clubs are still tied, standings from two years back (or three years back, four years back, etc) are used to break the tie.“
the current waiver period ends Aug 31.

Rethinking this it really won't help them get under it. Anyone who isn't claimed would still get paid by them even if released.

Cris E reacted to Doc Munson in Making moves for the playoffs with Angels
Can anyone tell me if they still have revocable waivers? or are all waivers now irrevocable? I know when there were 2 trade deadlines, after the first one teams would pretty much place anyone and everyone on (revocable) waivers. If they were claimed then they would just pull them back off waivers (which is why it was supposed to be confidential), but if they made it through without being claimed, then they could be traded.
Heck even Joe Mauer was put on waivers.
Now with just the 1 trade deadline, I am guessing all waivers are irrevocable?

I can't say I'm a fan of any of this, but the rules are the rules.
Lopez or Moore would certainly be an upgrade over Floro.
Grichuk or Bader would offer an upgrade over Luplow, and both could give Taylor a chance to rest. I just don't see much playing time for them if guys come back healthy and stay healthy.

I'm betting the FO sees Buxton taking over for Luplow and Kiriloff for Gallo ... A pitcher is optioned for Castro

Yup, I want to wait for the full list of cuts before I make my wish list. Bader might be nice, a solid reliever would be great.
Interesting all the cuts this year. My suspicion is the new limit on September rosters has more effects than just who you can bring up. In the past, a lot of these guys might have just sat on the bench and done nothing. Now, actual players are needed.
I also wonder how much of this the FO was anticipating. It might explain some trade deadline things. We shall see.
