I'd do it - perfect stopgap until Lewis is there, ready or not.
Can't overstate the importance of a good fielding shortstop with what looks to be a young and largely unproven pitching staff.

With the Pitching staff we will be rolling out, you won't need to worry about S.S. defense.  The defense we are going to need will be pushing the fences back and raising them higher.  Maybe we can keep some of those HR's in the yard then.

The Twins HOF crew was just filled out. Spent some time looking at Oliva and Kaat's stats: deserving, perhaps even moreso than some of our current HOFers.
Happy ray of sunshine in a crappy, gloomy off-season, Buxton extension aside.

Well, I am beyond elated that my favorite player Tony Oliva made it into the Hall of Fame.  Happy for Kaat as well - good day to be a Twins fan!

I don't understand the question. If the lockout extends into the season how could one watch more games?

MLB needs to buy back the rights to their product, clean it up, nurse it back to health and then showcase it affordably and to the masses on any and every platform they can.
I mean, that's what they should do if the owners want the game to be around for more than another decade. If they'd rather make as much money as they possibly can for the next few years until the game is dead, I guess they should just keep turning a blind eye.
Casual baseball fans are not going to pay more than a nominal fee to watch baseball on TV. When only the diehard fans watch your sport, you become lacrosse.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but if Buxton gets 625 PA every year and wins the MVP award every year,  the Twins will pay him a total of 173.5 million dollars over the course of the contract.  That would come to approximately 24.75M per year for a MVP winner 7 consecutive years.   LOL.  Team friendly you say.  Oh yeah.

I love this deal for Twins fans. Byron Buxton will be in MN and not kicking butt for the Dodgers or the Mets or god only knows whom.
If Buxton is happy with it, then that's great for him. It gives him life-changing, generational wealth, which is terrific. I don't care about whether it costs ownership; the Pohlads are doing fine and will always do fine.
From a franchise perspective and being a team with more limits on payroll than some other teams, this is great too. Huge bonuses for MVP? Sure. If Byron Buxton wins an MVP, he'll deserve every penny of those multi-million bonuses and the club should be happy to pay it. I had assumed that the sticking point was escalators, not bonuses; if they were getting jammed up on stuff like this earlier in the summer then someone needs to give some wakeup calls to the FO, because good lord this is pretty ideal for the team. Sure, you don't have the same cost certainty when there could be a multi-million dollar bonus hanging out there, but a) if he wins it the revenues will probably be pretty strong, and b) you could simply escrow a year's potential bonus and wait on it if you're that concerned about payroll certainty. The PA bonuses are also ones that the team should be thrilled to pay, because if Buxton is on the field that much, then the potential $2.5M increase is worth it.
Byron Buxton could be the best player in all of baseball and the most we'll have to pay him will be like $25M. And with the way it's structured, this is a deal that's going to age really well.
But mostly, I'm just super happy that the most singularly exciting player in my Twins lifetime (and I'm not young) is staying with the team. Losing Byron Buxton because we wouldn't pay him a good, but under market contract would have been soul-crushing. He's one of our guys. We've seen him from the start, and there's something wonderfully joyous about having a player who combines such great skill with excitement and happiness be on your team for 10+ years of their career all the way from the start, and uniquely painful if they leave during their prime.
Today is a great day for Twins fans.

Literally no reason not to like this deal for the Twins. They're paying a guy who legitimately could win an MVP the same amount they paid for Happ + Colome last year.

Well...some.  We had a sizable contingent saying anything less than 150M was a slap in the face and he'd get at least 25M AAV.
This deal says a lot about Buck wanting to be here.  It also says a lot about what his agents thought would be available in FA.

Monkeypaws got a reaction from Twodogs in A case against signing the top free agents
All these threads, pipe dreams, about signing top free agents, I don't get it.
Free agents should be an add to a solid team, which the Twins are on the margin of, but not really.
I really believe the best teams are predominantly home grown: the Twins championship teams are an example. The great Yankees teams of recent years had a solid homegrown core, like wise the Red Sox, Giants.
Draft and develop is still the best way for a middle market team to succeed. I'd love to see the Twins take an aggressive approach to promotion of prospects instead of signing AAAA fodder filler like the bullpen of 2021.
Draft them then give them a chance dammit.
I truly don't see any reason other than overpay why a top FA would sign here. Not a solid way to move forward.

Monkeypaws reacted to John Bonnes in Am I wrong? I'd rather the Twins have Martin, Woods Richardson, and $20M per year to spend than Jose Berrios?
Would you rather the Twins had offered Berrios the same contract as the Blue Jays inJuly, or traded him for what they got and have the $20M to spend for the next six years (which might well be spend this offseason on a long-term deal).
I'll start: I'd take the trade. Granted, I'd feel a lot better if I knew that the $20M would be spent on a pitcher as good or better than Berrios (Ray, Gaussman, etc), but even it it's used to pick up two of DeSclafini/Matz/Wood/Gray/Cobb, I think I'd rather have that and two fairly high-end prospects than Berrios in what should be his declining years. Am I wrong?
(If your answer is some version of "they won't spend it" don't expect any kind of thoughtful response from me. This management team has shown they spend their budget and no more. I don't see any evidence they'll be pocketing the money, or that they would have stretched the budget for Berrios.)
